About This Game

Experience the wild as a mother badger sheltering her cubs from harm. On their journey they get stalked by a bird of prey, encounter perils of the night, river rapids crossings, big forest fires and the looming threat of death by starvation.

Food is to be found, but is there enough for everyone? You will learn that the cubs need food not just to survive, but to enable them overcome the varying challenges they will face as they make their way through the world.

Are you ready for a truly different adventure, something that might evoke feelings you've never felt in a game before? In the wild, all living creatures are put to the test. The question in the end is who will survive to live another day?

Retro Family have once again composed a beautiful soundtrack to an original and graphically innovative setting in a world of nature where shelter is your only hope and survival your only goal.

Overview: Adventure

+ The gameplay has you controlling a mother badger with her 5 babies following. You have to find/hunt for food to feed your babies as well as traverse the dangerous environments as you avoid harm.

+ Really loved the art style, it has a minimalistic quality to it yet feels very unique it its own way

+ The game takes place over a series of different environments each area getting progressively more dangerous and more unique. It is always an interesting experience when you reach a new area.

+Losing a baby feels sad and yet you have no choice to move along reminding you the harsh realities of nature. Very few games invoke that sense of feeling yet this game does it in such an easy way.

+ Good sense of pacing,

+No HUD, allowing for a more immersive experience

+ Free DLC to extend the games very short length

The Bad

-game doesn't do the best of jobs explaining certain gameplay elements often leaving you confused in certain areas.

-The game is very short. It will take roughly 1 hour to beat, there is however a dlc that changes up the gameplay a bit to keep you interested in a few more hours if you like.

Conclusion

This game is a perfect example of an indie game done right. You don't need super realistic graphics to make the game standout. The developers combined an interesting concept with a unique art style and made a game that I was engaged with throughout the end. Losing a baby is sad because you legitimately feel like you failed as your duty as a parent. This game pleasantly surprised me.

Shelter is a lovely survival game which has you playing as an intrepid babdgermum or badgerdad whose job it is to save your kit.

The game plays very well and looks fantastic. The soundtrack is joyous to listen to and the threats ingame tangible. Over a very short time you feel a real connection with your baby badgers and will do anything to save them.

Sadly, the game falls down on it's length, which is my only criticism. A lovely little game, but little it is, with around 1 hour for a full playthrough.

Still a fun experience!

I got really drunk and played this game... ended up naming my precious badger babies. When I lost turtle I was screaming at the river. Then when I was done I wanted to punch a bird. Buy this game.

The mother badger struggles are real;
As a mother I felt obliged to care for my young, we set out on a journey to somewhere but ultimately leading to nowhere.
Unfortunately we lost some fur-babies along the way.

-We lost Timothy to the hawk
-We lost Joseph to the darkness
-We lost Steve to the angry tides of the river
-We lost Kane to another hawk

I died protecting Bob, this was my LEGACY
7.5/10 would like to be reincarnated as a badger

I recommend not naming your badger babies, I cried IRL everytime one got taken from my grasp. :(

The emotions of keeping my faimly alive through the elments of danger is only explinable by the fact that I was drunk while playing this game. As I finshed the game I only had 1 of my 5 badgers left now I know how hard it is to be monnmy a badger! Now I have fulfiled one of my lifetime goals in life.

This game is amazing. Yes, it's short. Yes, it's basic. Yes, it's far from being graphically groundbreaking. But guess what? it works!... It speaks to your guts without a single word. It's an experience with a lot of soul. No HUD needed, no briefing nor story. In the wild life, it's the instinct that tells you what to do. Although the game being very short, it's a little piece of art that you should play to the end the best way you can. It's self-rewarding.

Not sure if the fact that I'm liking games like this because I'm getting older, or because I've become jaded toward the "Triple-A" games, but the fact is this is a game worth picking up and playing.

Shelter is a pretty short, linear, "puzzle" game. You play as a mother badger and must make it through the levels while keeping your children fed and alive. Which, there is plenty of food around, so that aspect isn't really a big deal. I honestly don't even know what would happen if you skipped some food or didn't feed your children at all. There are a couple animal food sources that spice up the task of getting sustenence as they are more challenging to hunt. It is not that tough to figure out though.

The meat of the game is just directing the badgers through the levels and the puzzles are which path to take to avoid the threats of predators. It's quite simple. The reason I would recommend this game, and why anyone enjoys it, is the ambience and stylization of the game. The art style and music set the tone of the game and you start to feel more attached to the badger family. It becomes a narrative driven story when there really isn't a narrative. I recommend this game but only when it's on sale. I wouldn't say it's worth $10.00. It goes on sale every so often so I would pick it up then, like I did.

There is, however, a survival-esque type mode that I didn't try that could up the value for you. I read how it works and it is something you load up once a day and keep your badger cubs alive. You start in your den with your baby badger and as you check in daily, feeding and venturing further, you start to reveal more and more of the world to continue venturing out and keeping your cubs growing. If that sounds interesting to you, beyond the main story mode, then all the more reason to check this game out.

I feel so done with life honestly. I tried so hard to evade that ♥♥♥♥ing hawk i swear. The hawk got none of my kids. Eddy and Stripes got eaten by the river. Dots and Joey got eaten by the darkness. My last baby... she had to watch me get eaten... poor little lucy. i'm just gonna go cry now.

I lost at least one pup to starvation, another to some rapids while I stood safely on a rock next to him, and a good two or three the hawk got. This game is essentially Child Neglet Simulator 2013! 5 out of 5 kids lost/dead, would totally let them all die again!

Shelter is a quite short but beautiful designed game with an unique art style way off the mainstream. You and your cubs have to survive in the unforgiving wilderness with new obstacles to master each day. It creates an intense emotional connection with your offspring, when you try to find food and hide from the enemy to survive the day.

A beautiful and heartwrenching game that executes a simple dynamic in a novel manner. Not particularly challenging, but very relaxing. Depending on how you feel about badgers... very engrossing content. The best feature, for me, was the unique art direction. The artistic style entranced my daughter, and whet my appetite for the sequel.

Life as a badger is never easy, especially as a single parent raising their five kids while trying to take a road trip through eagle country.

A delightful world with a painterly visual style hides the sinister tones of harsh survival. Five hungry mouths to feed plus multiple predators searching for their own meals. Compounded by natural obstacles only further raises the stakes.

The gameplay and mechanics are simple but most badgers are not required to hack consoles or solve international crises. The minimalistic UI works well in the vast majority of the time, but some more visual clues for what to go would help the overall experience.
