On va tout de suite commencer avec le GROS point noir du jeu: le prix.

Durant de nombreuses années, nous avons critiqué la plupart des éditeurs avec la belle mode des DLC payant qui offre vraiment pas grand-chose pour le prix. Activision, Ubisof et EA sont les plus connus. Et bien figurez-vous que c'est des rigolos face aux développeurs de ROF.

Car en plus de payer le jeu de base 45 euros, ils vont font payer un prix exorbitant les avions et leurs améliorations qui vont avec.

Pour être sur d'avoir le jeu complet il faut débourser pas moins de 250 euros. À ma connaissance ROF reste la plus grosse arnaque vidéoludique, à moins que je me trompe.


Pour mon pars j'ai eu l'intelligence ou pas de le prendre chez un vendeur de clé, pour 6 euros avec 2 DLC, oui c'est mal mais bon, les carottes c'est bon mais dans l'oignon ça fait un peu mal. Être passionné de jeu vidéo c'est bien mais évité d'etre une vache à lait c'est mieux.


Je descends le jeu juste pour ça car pour le reste c'est du tout bon.

Donc ROF est une simulation dans le contexte de la Première Guerre mondiale, extrêmement pousse. Poussee a un point rarement vu dans ce genre de simulation, la série des Faclon a l'epoque poussé le truc assez loin tout comme les Flight Simulator... Mais dans le contexte présenté vous allez en baver, car piloté un Fokker ou un Nieuport ce n'est pas comme piloter un F16 ou un MIG.

Dans une interface sobre mais jolie plusieurs options sont à votre disposition. Les missions rapides et missions sont là pour jouer sans fioritures, mais si vous n'avez que la version de base, très peu de missions sont dispos, car elles corresponde à un avion ou une période spécifique de la guerre.

Il y a ensuite le mode campagne qui permet de jouer un scénario propre à un pays, et contient une campagne d'entraînement indispensable pour connaitre les ficelles du pilotage de ces vieux coucous. Mais il n'y a pas vraiment beaucoup de choix, car comme je le repete je n'ai que la version de base.

Et le mode le plus sympa est le mode carrière, où l'on tient le rôle d'un pilote tout au long de la guerre, comme toujours avoir tous les avions permettent plus de choix dans les escadrons ou de commencer plus tot dans la guerre. Ce mode est vraiment sympa car on évolue dans l'escadron au fil des semaines, on suit les missions des autres membres de l'escadre, on étudie les rapports de reconnaissance pour les futurs sortie, on lit les dépêches dans les journaux pour suivre l'évolution de la guerre et l'évolution des tableaux de chasse des as. Non l'immersion est totale et c'est un gros point positif.


Je passe sur le multi car je n'ai pas assez de bouteille pour donner une critique constructive, mais nul doute qu'elle doit être épique.

Maintenant le gros point positif de ROF: l'immersion globale du titre. Déjà graphiquement c'est soigné, c'est même carrement sublime avec toutes les options au max, rayon du soleil qui éblouit, passage dans les nuages réalistes, pluie plus vraie que nature, carlingues des appareils bien détaillées bref du bonheur. Au sol ce n'est pas en reste non plus, pas mal de petits détails comme les tranchées, les voies ferrées, les villages, les forêts etc. Tout est bien modélisé, de ce côté là ROF est irréprochable.

Niveau réalisme ROF est vraiment au top, a moins de faire des réglages pour rendre le vol plus facile ( que je recommande pour se faire la main ) tout est paramétrable. Démarrage du moteur, mélange du carburant, de l'huile, décollage et atterrissage tout sont à faire soi-même, surveiller le régime moteur, désenrayer les mitrailleuses, donner des ordres à ses ailiers tout dois être fait par le joueur. En gros comme un vrai pilote de cette époque quoi.

Je parle maintenant de LA grosse partie non négligeable du jeu, la physique...

Ultra réaliste, un vieux coucou n'est pas un jet, partez trop longtemps en piqué et vous arracherez les ailes, viré trop brusquement l'avion peut se disloquer, idem avec les impacts sur les carlingues, suivant là où vous allez tirer le résultat ne sera pas le même...

Une balle touche une partie de l'aile, l'aile commencera à montrer des signes de faiblesse, pire si le pilote fait un mouvement trop violent il peut la perdre en vol. Le moteur est touché, l'avion trop lourd perd de l'altitude pour atterir en catastrophe ou pire s'ecraser a flan de montagne ou dans une foret. Bref tout peut arriver en combat aérien, pas de point de vie, si vous touchez le pilote directement il meurt ou au mieux etre blessé. Etc Etc. Etc.

Non si on oublie le système honteux des prix des DLC, ROF est un très grand simulateur.

Donc je ne peux que le conseiller

Après 77 heures sur ROF il est temps pour moi de noter le mode carrière, et je suis terriblement déçu, cette campagne dynamique n'est pas si dynamique que ça. Je passe le générateur de missions utiles dans ce cas de figure car il sert à nous faire des missions les plus variées possibles sans tomber dans la routine.

Là où là-bas blesse et le déroulement de la campagne, il y a une ligne de front propre au contexte militaire, mais a par des tirs de DCA et des explosions sur le front, pas trace d'infanterie, pas de tanks, pas de véhicules de transport, pas d'artillerie non plus, en fait les tranchées sont vides, ça casse un peu le réaliste du truc.

Les aérodromes sont vides, pas d'avions dans les hangars, pas d'avion sur la piste, rien de rien, une ou deux DCA par-ci par-là mais rien de folichon. C'est pareil pour votre camp, il y a bien quelque train par-ci par-là et des véhicules mais on n'a pas l'impression d'être dans un contexte de guerre mondiale.

Je peux admettre qu'en dehors de la ligne de front ça soit plus calme mais là c'est carrément zone vide.


Parlons des escadrons proprement dits, vous faites partis d'un escadron de votre choix, il arrive à voir d'autres avions appartenant à un autre escadron faire ses missions en parallèle avec vous, ça rend le truc plus réaliste, vous n'êtes pas seul dans la plupart des cas...

Admetton que vous souhaitez être transféré a un autre escadron pour diverses raisons, une fois transféré vous intégrez un escadron avec des pilotes sans aucune mission et victoire a leurs actifs, en sachant que ce même escadron et pas loin du votre et a effectuée des vols... Je parle d'un transfert après 6 mois de combat, là encore le réalisme en prend un grand coup dans la tronche.

Parlons a present des blessures de pilotes aussi, dans ma campagne j'ai etait gravement blessé, crash sévère avec grosse blessure, rentré à la base, le rapport de mission explique blessé, et là miracle je suis de nouveau dans le vol suivant, là je parle d'un vol quelques heures après mon crash.

C'est pareil pour les autres pilotes.

Non le mode carrière est bien une vaste blague, on m'a conseillé le genial "Pat Wilson Campaign Generator" qui occulte une grande partie des défauts mais la sauce ne prend pas, même si le mod est plus réaliste que le mode carriere il m'est difficile d'y jouer.

How this game got ANY good reviews is beyond me. I suspect a large number of the positive ones are in sarcasm. This bothers me, because it gives the game a better overall score than it deserves. Seriously, write a sarcastic review if you want, but DONT rate a game as good when it isnt.

Ok, let's start with the good parts of the game. Firstly, it is a full game and a well made one at that. Good graphics, similar idea to War Thunder in terms of controls and realism. And it is realistic, it's an excellent flight simulator, good for your average propeller head. I thought, "Oh, hey, look, a War Thunder style game during the WW1 era, dont see any of those around".

The bad part lies ENTIRELY in the marketting. I laughed my butt off after playing it. This is NOT a 'free to play' game. It is a DEMO at best, and it's all down to the GREED of the game creators.

What they've done esentially, is strip out ALL the game until it is just the game engine alone. All your initial "free to play" download includes is ONE plane (one that, apparently, can't be flown in anything other than the training missions), ONE sample map (a map that is only used on the training missions), and SIX training missions (the ONLY place in the game you can actually fly for free).

THAT IS IT. Want campaigns? Money please. Want the maps FOR those campaigns? Money please. Want the planes required for each mission? Money please. Want multiplayer access? Money please. They have cut out all of the game's content, divided up piece by piece, and are charging the price of a full game for EACH PIECE. WHAT THE CRAP?

And what's worse, reading the other reviews, it sounds like this game used to cost 50 dollars just for that demo! For 50 dollars, it better damn well have ALL THE CONTENT already in it.

I am a huge fan of free to play games like world of tanks, world of warships, and war thunder. All 3 of these have excellent pay to progress systems. They all have 90% of their content availible to free players, but use microtransactions to encourage players to pay. You dont have to, but you can.

Here is what a player like me expects when they read the words "free to play"

1.) 90% of the content availible is free. The other 10% is premium, but reasonably priced.

2.) An in-game economic system. Standard "silver" and premium "gold". Gold can be used to convert free experience, buy silver, buy premium content, and buy silver.

3.) Standard accounts and premium accounts. Premium accounts get 50% more XP and credits. This encourages people to 'pay to progress' by essentially buying a subscription, but keeps the game profitable enough that free players wont lose out.

4.) Tech trees. By putting in a progression system, it gives purpose to the economic system, experience system, and pay to progress aspect. This progression system is what drives profits for games with microtransactions. It relies not on beating the money out of people, but on the IMPATIENCE of people. Either you can got a top teir plane within a year of playing, OR, you can get one within 3 months by buying a premium account, a few premium planes, and converted experience. You dont need EVERY player to pay money, just the impulsive ones. and trust me, the impulsive ones are worth 10 regular joes.

This is a tried, tested, and successful system. It's been proven to work, and be VERY profitable. How can you tell? Because, I've HEARD of world of tanks. I've HEARD of war thunder. I've even been PLAYING them for as long as this game's been out.

want to know what I havent heard of? RISE OF FLIGHT. Want to know why it took so long to run accross this game? Because it's not popular. And it's not popular because the twits who made the game are trying to BEAT THE MONEY OUT OF PEOPLE.

All of the essentials of a REAL free to play game are missing in this game. Instead, there is just campains, missions, and multiplayer (aspects a lot of real free to play games already have anyway), aspects I'd expect a fully paid for game to have.

And this game is a full box copy game... That they've slapped microtransactions onto. and when i say slapped onto, I mean they've slapped it onto E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G. Nothing but the game engine is free, and what is a game engine without a game? Then, they got negative reviews because people were paying $50 for a friggin demo... Well YEAH! WTF did they expect?

So, they made the game "free" to justify the microtransactions... NO. These are not microtransactions, these are MACROTRANSACTIONS. The paid content is maps, missions, campains, multiplayer access, and planes. You literally need at least THREE of these to even PLAY the game. This game isnt free to play, it's not even pay to progress, it's not even pay to win. This game is pay to PLAY, a full box copy game they try to sell to you as a microtransaction nightmare.

And they've taken advantage of these microtransactions to squeeze money out of people. They've taken a game that is worth 25 or 30 dollars at most, and made it literally HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS.

I get the impression they saw games like war thunder and said "hey, they're making money off of microtransactions, let's jump on that band wagon", without actually stopping and bothering to ask "what makes games like war thunder successful?"

Wanna know why war thunder is successful? Because they havent sloppily slapped microtransactions onto a box copy game, then had the gall to call it "free to play". Perhaps Rise of flight should also be asking "what makes other 'free to play' games unsuccessful?" There are at least a hundred failed free to play games on steam alone they could check for reference. They all have the same thing in common: Greed. If a game is too unprofitable (in terms of in-game economy) and requires a premium account or other premium content, then it is not free to play. If a game rewards those who pay for an unfair advantage, then it is not free to play, it is pay to win. If a game takes a demo, marks it as free to play, then makes all the content paid for seperately, then is not free to play, it is PAY TO PLAY. I am sick and tired of seeing great games become unplayable because of this BS. Rise of flight is a great game. So why are its creators trying to beat it to death?

Will I recommend this game? If you like spending 200 or 300 dollars for 25 dollars worth of content, or LESS CONTENT than you can find in War Thunder, a REAL FREE TO PLAY GAME, then fine, knock yourself out. Otherwise, don't download it. As a matter of fact, If anybody got this before they stopped charging for the demo, they should be demanding a friggin refund.

I've already uninstalled.

Steam is at fault as well. Do they not bother to regulate their games? Do they not REVIEW them? NO! In fact, it is CURATOR RECOMMENDED!

I'll tell you why too, because the creators of steam are just as greedy as the creators of this game, and they make money off of every over priced BS transaction. I think Steam should be held accountable. They need to remain impartial in order to maintain the quality of the games being put on their program. Otherwise, people will stop using it. I've already used steam less and less as a result of past dissapointments.

If people are going to put box copy games on steam, steam needs to demand that the majority of the content be in that initial purchase. If people are going to put free to play games on steam, steam needs to regulate how they do it so the game remains successful. It is profitable for steam to do this because it ensures they make greater money. War Thunder is on steam too, and I garuntee you they've made FAR more money off of that one game than any of these other BS "free to play" games. But this is "free to play" (as in, A DEMO). So if you dont believe me, go ahead and download all 7 gigibytes of wasted time, and see for yourself. Actually I INVITE you to do so just to experience the annoyance first hand. Only then will you know why I criticize.

This simulator opened a world of fascination for me. After playing for two weeks or so, I began to look for anything about WWI aviation -- stories, movies, books, and airplane models. The level of historical detail in Rise of Flight is extremely impressive, especially the vast variety of historical "skins" for the planes you fly, and how certain planes are available to certain squadrons at specific points during the war (in career mode).

It's tough going at first, and I managed to crash probably 20 times before I managed to get my first kill in a dogfight. Once you learn about the quirks and idiosyncrasies of the individual planes, it gets much easier. Be sure to check out Requiem's excellent tutorial videos for a smoother start.

If you are into flight simulators or the history of WWI in any way, I very much recommend Rise of Flight.

Simply the greatest WWI flight sim ever. The sensation of flying in this game is very realistic, the combat is historically accurate, and the graphics are beautiful. Every aircraft type has a unique personality and takes hours to master. This game is not perfect but there is a great deal of fun here to be had for armchair pilots.

Do not operate near children, the elderly, or small animals. It's a hardcore flight sim and is light years beyond W********r in terms of required skill. It's more of a "free to try" game than "free to play"; most of the really interesting aircraft are DLC. Understand this before knocking RoF. Also, this sim is still supported by the developers and they are continually updating and adding new content -- 7 years from release.

Recommended - with a few caveats.

At the time of writing this sim is selling on Steam for £8.99, and the DLC between £4.79 and £6.89. I'm willing to buy DLC of this quality at this price (in fact I've bought the lot). When compared to £15 I just paid for the FSX Spitfire I think the Rise of Flight DLC represents good value; at full price, however, I'm not so sure. All flight sims seem to have adopted the DLC model, with DCS World typically charging 30 quid for theirs. They should all be put against a wall and shot.

The DRM and registration is a pain, and I don't think it's made clear quite how to do this properly. On first registering the game you're taken to the ROF website to create an account, and (if I remember correctly) you're given an activation key - but this activation key is for the demo version, and you also have to paste in your Steam purchase key as well or you do not get the Channel Battles Edition (I spent quite a while swearing and cursing about what thieves these guys were until I worked this bit out). Likewise with the DLC, all you get from Steam is an activation key which must be entered before anything will work.

The graphics and detail are gorgeous on a half decent machine (mine's two years old, so state of the art isn't required), but to set things up you need to launch a separate settings.exe file hidden away in SteamApps\common\Rise of Flight 2.0\bin_game\release\.

As for the game itself, where it's good it's absolutely outstanding, and where it isn't so good it really is cr@p. The learning curve is steep. Those early planes were awful, and real pigs to control. This is reflected in the flight models, and even getting the damned things off the ground is a challenge. If you want to jump straight into dogfights without learning how to work these things you won't last long; you'll tear your wings off or spin into the ground or, maybe, get shot down. If you're not willing to spend time learning this game then think carefully before buying it, you might be better buying something else. On the other hand, if you do stick with it, the first time you successfully take off, complete a few circuits and land safely is a real buzz. This sim creates a feeling of actually being in the air better than any other I've played.

Where it's not so good is the mission and career selection, which all seems very muddled. And while the the aircraft modelling is excellent, the character modelling is the worst I've seen for years, with voice acting so atrocious I winced the first time I heard it.
