WINNER: IGF China award for BEST GAME!

Cubetractor is a neo-retroesque action-strategy-puzzle hybrid where you defeat enemies through an unconventional cube-pulling, turret-buildling mechanic.

The game carries elements of a reverse tower defence and a grounded bullet-hell dodger to deliver a unique gameplay experience presented in a classic top-down perspective.

You play as Endroi, a menacingly happy-go-lucky quadrubot as he strives to master the art of Cubetracting -- the art of attracting Cubes. It's a deceptively straightforward skill that involves dexterity, acute awareness, multi-tasking and tactical positioning. You'll have to strategize, solve and fight your way through multitudes of enemy installations to achieve your coveted goal.

Features

  • 40+ maps for you to pull, crush and build: Levels carefully designed to bring out the emergent dynamics in a unique mechanic.
  • Symmetrical Balance: Why do bad guys always have to be stronger than you? In Cubetractor, the enemy structures are exactly the same as yours, other than they got there first. Defeating them is a matter of thoughtful timing and positioning.
  • Purely indie-made: Done by 2 people, living off their savings, working off random coffee joints.
  • Hardcore Awards for Hardcore Players: The main levels are designed for speedruns. Collect all the batteries, reach the finishing goal within impressively tight time limits -- do all that without a scratch -- to earn the most coveted of accolades. Don't worry, there are also options for those of us that are more human.

This is a great game.
I love the pixelated art and the simple gameplay.
You play as a robot and your job is to pull cubes.
As the game progress you can combine cubes to make a cannon, wall, power plant, etc...

This game is quite hard too. You need to consider where you build your things to maximize your your power.
To get perfect score (4 stars) you have to finish the level flawlessly (collect all the batteries, finish below the time limit and taken no damage at all).

No this is not a tower defense game.
This is an action puzzle game with a bullet-hell twist based on getting quick times, collecting all the pickups, and not getting hit.
There aren't many levels overall 12 main levels with some sidequests[HLTB says 4 hours for campaign], and there are tutorial levels mixed in.
The graphics and soundfx fit very well together and emulate a 16 bit title well. I honestly wasn't paying attention to the music, the gameplay is hectic and it took most of efforts to dodge bullets.
I've had a lot of fun playing and I'll go back to finish the campaign. Getting 4/4stars on each level seems incredibly hard and I only managed to perfect the first level so far. I decided to write this because the helpful reviews filter was just awful for this game.
I think anyone who enjoys top down action, action/strategy or dodgy-shooter type games will like this game.

Cubetractor is the first game from Ludochip, a small indie developer. Despite being their first release, they have managed to craft an interesting title with a good mix of gameplay styles.

Story
The game starts off with Endroi, the robot that players control, being given menial tasks like washing dirty cubes in the river using his ability to pull cubes towards himself. Quickly he goes out of control, using this skill to take down the walls blocking his way and then destroying even the turrets that were to stop his rampage. Endroi continues north, leaving ruin behind him, while thinking that everything he comes across is just another task he should deal with.

Presentation
This game goes for a simple 2D style that works well. While not high resolution, everything is easy to recognise and has enough detail. Players will recognise each block and turret at a glance. The music is also very simple, and tends to loop maybe a bit too often, but its still nice enough. Nothing awful that would result in muting it has been found during gameplay. This game is however lacking in any sort of options, with only the basics covered, like muting the sound and toggling full screen, not even a different resolution setting available.

Controls
This game supports gamepad or keyboard controls, with only a few actions available. Endroi can move with the arrow keys, use the Z button to pull a block and X to remove a created turret. One problem with the game is the lack of changeable settings for these.

Gameplay
As already explained, the game starts off with players pulling blocks around. Over time, the player will learn to pull them into the paths of enemy towers and later to pull different blocks towards each other to form different allied towers, such as a defensive wall, a regular turret, a generator that boosts the fire rate of close by units and several others. While early levels will make this each, later locations will have blocks in difficult locations, so players must plan out what to pull on, while dodging enemy attacks all the while. The mix of action, puzzles and some tower defence does make for an interesting game, and most missions can be done in bursts of a few minutes, making this title suitable for those without a lot of time.

Lifespan
Each of the primary missions has 4 ranks to earn, and even skilled gamers shouldn't expect to see a Master Rank after finishing each for the first time. The highest rank requires players to be fast and untouchable while still destroying every enemy in their way and collecting the items they drop. Gold or Silver ranks will be much more common early on. As well as the primary missions, players will also unlock side quests in which you must destroy every enemy and collect their item to complete each level, adding a bit more content to the game for those who enjoy the challenge.

While this game doesn't stand out on how it presents itself, the gameplay with the mix of different styles works very well, though could drive away some players who don't enjoy all three.

The combination of a slight delay needed for every input, the coordination required for building, and the fact that you take damage from everything including the blocks you use to build stuff results in an extremely frustrating underlying experience. To make matters worse, you are stopped dead anytime you take damage, and this on top of the slight delay built into the game creates a very odd start-stop style that makes coordination even more annoying and frustrating then it might've been otherwise.

Stay away unless, well, you've seen gameplay and thought "I must play that" on sight. If you're on the fence, it's probably not worth it.

If you can settle with gold/silver/bronze, this game is fun and easy.

If you're a perfectionist, like me, and NEED master.... It's harder than Impossible Game, Dark Souls, Quake, and Superhexagon combined. ♥♥♥♥ing me the ♥♥♥♥ off the entire time I'm playing it.

11/10 surprisingly fun for what it looks like.

This game is essentially the reverse of a tower defense game, and it will provide you with roughly 6 or 7 hours of gameplay.
If it's in a humble bundle, you must buy it! -8/10

Good game, nice blend of mostly puzzle with a little timing (or, if you go for the speed ratings, a lot of timing). Little on the short side even with all the sidequests, but I'm not sure that's necessarily a bad thing, better than just keeping on getting harder until people quit in frustration, and if you still want a challenge you can go for the 'master' rating on every level!

Do not read into the tower defense part. This is strictly a puzzle/action game. You also are locked into using your keyboard for movement and using your abilities. Perhaps there is controller support, but definitely no mouse. You use arrow keys for movement, z and x for activation.

All you do is pull blocks to solve levels through either moving blocks into enemies, or combining them to make your turrets/towers. THAT is your tower defense part of the game, but it's honestly not enough like an actual tower defense game to deserve that comparison.

I personally wasn't that taken by the game, but I can see where others might have an amusing time with it. Only certain puzzle games work for me, and this isn't one of them. It also requires a bit too much in the way of perfect timing, and quick reflexes, in a bothersome control scheme, from what I would think most puzzle buffs would prefer.

Fun little game. Will grab your attention for an hour or so.
Basically you use this cute little robot tractor to pull cubes across the screen. The cubes can be used as weapons to take out baddies or combined to make turrents. NES style graphics and runs real smooth (as you would expect). Chirptune midi

I was suprised by how much fun this game actually is after just a couple levels. Each level increases in difficulty and theres a story that I haven't payed any attention to. Fun oldschool style game.

I thought this game was an action strategy game, but it is really just a straight action game. I played the first few levels, which were okay but nothing special.

When it started to get a bit harder, the difficulty was purely due to the action elements, the strategy required in the level was obvious. That might be okay, but the controls are also not great, despite being very simple.

This would've been a pretty nice Flash game, but it's not really worth the few bucks on Steam.

Quirky, loads of fun as long as you are not expecting more than what it is. It would seem to be a perfect "I've got 10 minutes, what can I do?" time filler game... if you can manage to actually stop at 10 minutes, which so far I have been unable to do. Mix of puzzle/strategy reverse tower defense with the twitch mechanics of Frogger.

I got it as part of a bundle so it was definitely worth the price I paid. As a standalone, it feels more like something I might pay mobile app prices for. YMMV

I love everything about this game. A really simple but difficult to execute gameplay mechanic. Taxing puzzles. Intelligent design choices. The presentation is perfect for me as a pixel art fan. The sense of humour to the tractor dialogues is great too! I can see why this game gets rated! A steal.

Yes ,this is a good game worth your money. Simple strategy, it Could have been a SNES game. I think that if you paid 5$ for it,It was well worth it. At 10$ It is a little short for a Game. If you work for more than 20$ an hour it is worth a lot more than a half hour work. ( Except if you are a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ or gigolo, i would not suck a ♥♥♥♥ for that game...Maybe for Desktop Dungeons.)
