About This Content

The hustle and bustle of the UK’s capital city and the sprawling countryside of Essex and East Anglia come together in one fantastic modern route for Train Simulator.

The 19th Century London Liverpool Street is the City terminus point of the Great Eastern Main Line before the line winds through the suburbs of London and past the Olympic Park, into Essex and on to Suffolk.

The earliest section of the line (often shortened to ‘GEML’) opened in 1839 and ran from Devonshire Station (in Mile End, London) to Romford, Essex. A year later, the London terminus was moved to Bishopsgate and over subsequent years the line was extended further into Essex, reaching Ipswich in 1846. London Liverpool Street became the City terminus of the route in 1872, and now sees more than 57 million passengers each year.

The 70 mile route from London to Ipswich sees daily fast passenger services to and from East Anglia with slower commuter services serving the ‘banker belt’. It is electrified at 25 kV AC using overhead wires and has a line speed of up to 100mph (161km/h). The line also carries frequent freight operations working from Felixstowe and Ipswich to Stratford, where connections are made with the North London Line and main lines radiating from London to other parts of the UK.

A common sight on the line is the Siemens-built Class 360 EMU, operated by Greater Anglia and included with the route. These ‘Desiro’ units were introduced to service in 2003 and by mid-2004 had completely replaced the ageing Class 312 slam-door units. The four-car units have a top speed of 100mph and quick acceleration, making them ideal for long commuter lines with frequent station stops.

Notable landmarks along the route include London Liverpool Street, Stratford, the Olympic Park, Ilford Carriage Sidings, Chelmsford, Colchester, Manningtree, Stoke Tunnel (the only railway tunnel on the Great Eastern Main Line) and Felixstowe Container Terminal and Docks, as well as the Braintree branch from Witham and the short branch line to Colchester Town.

Eight scenarios for the route:
  • Heading Out
  • Colchester Connection
  • Eastern Intercity
  • It’s Snow Fun
  • Braintree Branch
  • Sunday Closures
  • 1Y41 – 12:52 Ipswich to London Liverpool Street
  • 2W61 Shenfield to London Liverpool Street

More scenarios are available on Steam Workshop online and in-game. Train Simulator’s Steam Workshop scenarios are free and easy to download, adding many more hours of exciting gameplay. With scenarios being added daily, why don’t you check it out now!

This route is the most complete on Train Simulator. It includes the ability to do Ipswich, Colchester Town and Braintree runs fully, where normally only the link to Ipswich would have been available. Also, Shenfield Metro, Southend, Clacton-on-Sea/Walton-on-the-Naze, Harwich and Norwich runs can be done partially. This route is one of the only ones where a 'full day' shift would be considerable without the tedious backwards and forwards shuttling you will do on other routes.

Negatives: The 360 was a silly train to choose. The 321/315 trains are both much more plentiful on this line. Also, this route is so unstable for scenario creators. If you want to create your own scenarios, turn your graphicas settings right down.

However: BUY THE UK COLLECTION! It is the same and comes with 2 routes (this and the Portsmouth Direct Line) and 3 trains (class 90, class 66 freightliner v2.0 and class 444). That is the sole reason why I do not recommend this add on.

In depth review.

Looks good when you first purchase the line, but as you start to play with QD and do the Scenario's the tell tale DTG signs of un-finished work pop up...

Some of the station's dont even appear, so you need to go into the editor to sort that problem.

The Harwich Harbour section is not available in QD, as they've not even bothered to finish doing it!!

There are no marker boards outside Chelmsford station telling you there is a new speed limit, heading towards London.

Scenario's: All work apart from : It's Snow Fun as the timing is totally out so have no chance of staying on schedule.

The train is good, the sound effects are nothing special. Though that I'm personally not to worried about.

At list price of £24. Most certainly not, to many mistakes with the core level, as above.
What about on discount? If your prepared to put up with the fault's/error's yes.
What about in a bundle. Yes, this is how I purchased this line along with another for just over £13. As the bundle had something like 65% discount in the winter sale.

Do I use it?

Yes, use it a lot for QD from driving trains up and down the uk. Felixstowe harbour is good asset to have. Not used at all by DTG in the scenario's which is a shame.

Have I got value for money from my purchase?

Yes, as I got it heavly discounted, so I can live with the problems.

Though think about this, you go to buy a car and when you get in it, to drive it away, the dashboard is missing?? Would you be happy?

Also you have to ask this, if DTG staff where paying for this with THEIR wages, would they be happy??? I'll leave DTG to answer that one.

Can I recommend this to you?? NO. It would be unfair to tell you it's 100% ready to go when it is not.

Nice route out of London. My only two complaints are the Mayflower Line not being included (the route to Harwich), and the fact than whenever I use the Free roam camera, the game crashes if there is a Class 360 on the route. Overall, I give the route a 7/10.

I got this route in a bundle and on sale, so if it weren't for those 2 factors, this would have been refunded already. While this is one of the longer routes in TS, it constantly reminds you that it is a half-♥♥♥♥♥ job at doing so. Station Platforms not showing and B2D crashes are a favorite party trick of this DLC, and you need to go into the asset editor to fix the problem as it has to do with graphical settings you run the game with. There is even a station placed incorrectly along the way.

Whilst TS2016 is given a lot of hate for the amount of DLC and the prices of them, a majority of them are to a standard, and this is not one of them.

Until these problems are fixed, don't buy. Put your money into another route.

I sincerely recommend this Add-on for Train Simulator ! The GEML London-Ipswich road is my favourite road for this game and especially for the line part between Shenfield and Ipswich ! I don't know why but the landscapes with many fields and many pretty town and cities make me feel something special, something warm...

The line is really long too : the line between London Liverpool Street and Ipswich is more than 70 miles (120 km) long and you have to add to this length the Braintree branch (10 miles) and the Felixstowe branch (20 miles) ! My only regret is that DTG didn't make the scenery for the Hartwich branch...

I hardly recommend to you to buy this line with the Class 90 DLC which is, to my mind, the best locomotive for Train Simulator !

A french player who loves English lines ! :)

Excellent route- my favourite in the game. Provides a mix of stopping services in to London and semi-fast and express up to Ipswich. It is well detailed, not amazing but decent.

The Class 360 is good, nice cab view and externals- ok passenger view. It also comes with plenty of good scenarios for the route.

Same price but comes with Class 66, Class 90, Class 444 and the Portsmouth Direct Line- all essentially for free, and even better if you get it in the sale. DO NOT be fooled by the Class 90 or Class 66 twin packs- £5 extra for a train you can get for 'free' in the UK collection, along with more. Complete rip off!

Other than this though- this is a great route that will provide hours of gameplay.

This is not a bad route, it runs for the most part with the exception of the class 90 pack that I bought with it as a twin pack, it has never worked and alwaqys crashes the game.
Other than that the route has major issues, the scenario "Snow fun" will reveal that there are missing stations. Running from Shenfield into Chadwell Heath you would expect to see a station there, well there isn't one, just flying station signs and people walking in the air, similarly the same for Goodmayes, and Ilford, which is where I gave up. Verifying files, uninstalling and reinstalling the entire game doesn't fix it, so it's a fail. I need the visual clues that a platform provides in order to stop properly, having the station actually missing totally destroys any immersiveness and ruins the play value.
I also bought the Powerhaul class 66 to go with this route, it works fine, but don't try and save in the scenario provided as any restart will result in the emergency brake being applied and your score dropping like a stone. So in conclusion, it does seem as if this route is flawed and was seeming unfinished prior to release, which is a pity as I put quite a bit of money in to it and further accompanying DLC to augment it, all seemingly wasted.

This is a good route for both passengers and Freightliner trains. The line to Felixstowe is also included, so you may run Diesel trains along that line with a little help from a workshop scenario. (I made one for it!)

I don't know why I really like this route. Perhaps its the various branch lines, or the long route into London, but I have been drawn to it ever since I bought it. I do know what I really hate about it though: it is very frustrating trying to build scenarios. I defintely recommend saving often (you'll soon learn where the game crashes all the time). Some locomotives/EMUs (eg Class 390) crash the game something badly (the game seems to lose track of where the stations are), while a Class 321 in the same scenario works fine.

If you like Quick Drive or have the patience to build your own scenarios, then this route can be a lot of fun (using other locos). The Class 360 is ok to drive once you work it out. You'll need some freight diesels to drive Felixstowe (where you can load/unload containers) other reviews for recommendations.

This is a nice, highly detailed route. Not much more to say really.
It's also nice that they've included the line to Felixtowe for the freight runs.

Simply oustanding route. The short drive out of Liverpool street up through Seven Kings and onward alone is worth the price. Try it at 2.30pm on a rainy Autumn day. Excellent. And do it in the Class 52 with it's wonderful view from the drivers seat and its even better.

This is a VERY good DLC

Train is very good with doors, formations and scenarios.
Reccomended with class 90 in UK collection.

Class 321?

The class 360 sometimes stops reacting to control inputs and won't move after calling at a station. Other than that, I have no complaints about the route, only make sure to buy it as part of a pack during sales.

GEML. Oh boy, is this gonna be fun! Well, it's linear, has only one train included. If you want the other train 'GEML Class 90', a payment of 15.41 GBP is requiered. This route is really unstable, this needs fixing. When this route was released, it even had a purple skies issue. The 360 is okay, I guess, but why the 360? Why not a 317? Notice I'm not gonna say 321 because DTG should not touch the 321 with a 10 ft pole until they get a quality control department. The scenery is okay, I guess as well, but why is there no scenery on the Mayflower Line? To take more money from us like they did with the Sheerness Branch? Well, Just Trains did the scenery and guess what? 14.99 USD for SCENERY. Overall, this route feels rushed so I'm giving it 4/10.

The lights at the stations are not working while you are driving at night, some of the stations are not even visible and the class 360 can not be controlled by the keyboard. Has to be fixed
