About This Content

The AT&N Class 280-157 ‘Consolidation’ was a freight locomotive operating on a short railroad in the Deep South of the USA, and is now available for Train Simulator.

The Class 280-157 was built by Lima Locomotive Works for the Alabama, Tennessee and Northern Railroad (AT&N). ‘Consolidation’ was the name given to American steam locomotives with a 2-8-0 wheel arrangement, and five of the Class 280-157 were built in the 1920s, all for the AT&N. The AT&N was a short freight line that operated between Mobile and Reform, in Alabama, founded in 1897 as the Carrollton Short Line Railway and operating until 1971 when it was absorbed into its then parent company, the St Louis-San Francisco Railway.

The Class 280-157 ‘Consolidation’ for Train Simulator, developed by Smokebox, is available in Alabama, Tennessee and Northern Railroad livery and features detailed controls and gauges, opening cab doors, windows, ventilator hatch and storm window, detailed internal and external animations and expert driving mode for sophisticated locomotive controls.

The locomotive is also Quick Drive compatible, giving you the freedom to drive the Class 280-157 on any Quick Drive enabled route for Train Simulator, such as those available through Steam. Also included are scenarios specifically for the Horseshoe Curve (available separately and required to play these scenarios).

Three scenarios for the Horseshoe Curve route:
  • Freight to South Fork (Tutorial)
  • Consolidating Power
  • Slippery Slope

More scenarios are available on Steam Workshop online and in-game. Train Simulator’s Steam Workshop scenarios are free and easy to download, adding many more hours of exciting gameplay. With scenarios being added daily, why don’t you check it out now!

The consolidation is a fun, advanced engine! You should be more advanced player to use it so get some practice in the cab!

Smokebox did it again. The second great live steam locomotive. I love this little loco. It's got an attitude however it you know how to treat it, it will responed to you well. This little guy tells the big ones to get out of the way here I come. Again like the UPFEF-3 it takes a while to learn how to run it but when you do you will love it also. Keep those live US steam locomotives coming Smokebox. They are a real treat.

Brakes do not release, throttle does not operate, headlight does not work. In short this vehicle cannot be moved.

Another excellent release from Smokebox, I can't recommend anything he creates enough. A very fun locomotive, especially on the Horseshoe curve. Great respect to the realism of the real thing, within the confines of TS. Not as high fidelity as his FEF-3, but easily one of the great steamers for TS.

The A.T.& N. Consolidation, along with the Union Pacific F.E.F. from Smokebox are what we sorely need for Train Simulator; North American steam locomotives that are high quality, feature laden, and fun to operate.

Of the very few North American steam locomotives that are available for this game, these two models stand head and shoulders above all of the others in terms of their fidelity to their real world prototypes and attention to detail.

Sound quality is amazing; not only are the chuffing of the locomotives well simulated, but all of the other sounds as well, like the hissing of escaping steam from various places and the "thunking" of appliances on the engines.

There are numerous smoke and steam exhaust animations on the engines, realistically portraying the prototypes. Besides the standard smokestack exhuast, cylinder co-cks, and whistle, these engines boast animations for the injector and feed water pump exhausts, turbo generators, as well as animated pop valves. In addition, the F.E.F. has animated blow-down valves. All of this extra attention to detail really adds to the immersion factor of the locomotives.

Their textures are beautiful to look at. The engines are prototypical; almost every detail down to the smallest rivet is LITERALLY modeled. Another great feature are the animated moving parts; besides the whirling side rods, the smaller valve gear parts like the reverse gear reach rod and the radious rod are also animated (nice touches); they can be seen to move when you adjust the reverser lever. Even the brake-rigging is animated. On the F.E.F. the compensating lever (throttle reach-lever on the engineers side of the boiler) is animated; watch it move as you adjust the throttle. There are numerous other hatches, windows, etc., that move or open. All valves and knobs in the cab work and function like on the real prototypes. Dynamic weather effects are included for the windows.

The advanced scripting of the engines is another exemplary aspect of the engines. Wheel slip is accurately modeled; if you let the drive wheels slip for too long or too violently, you will damage the engine and the scenario will end. Likewise, you can do damage to the locomotives if you don't blow the water out of the cylinders before moving, or if you overfill the boiler. On the Consolidatoin, if you don't turn on the hydrostatic lubricators, you will damage the engine. Brakes apply realistically so you cannot "stop on a dime"; you must plan your brake applications ahead of time, just like in the real world.

Lastly, the engines have two different operating modes; standard (HUD version) and advanced. In advanced mode you must not only drive the locomotive, but also fire it. Additionally, you must use the cabin controls; the HUD controlls are disabled for greater realism. This is extremely challenging, but also rewarding. If you find this too much of a challenge, you can use the standard locomotives (HUD version) where the HUD controls are enabled, allowing for easier operation. Also, in HUD mode the fireman is automated, freeing you to drive the locomotive, while the advanced scripting keeps the steam up.

Both locomotives come with three scenarios each and are Quick-Drive enabled.

With the combination of advanced features, attention to realism, and quality, the A.T. & N. Consolidation and the Union Pacific F.E.F. are by far, the best quality steam locomotives in the game, PERIOD. They are also arguably the best quality DLC offered for the game. If you are a fan of steam locomotives in general (as I am) and North American steam locomotives in particular (ditto) these engines are a must buy. Don't wait for a sale, they are worth every penny! Show Smokebox some love and maybe he will make some more beautiful steam locomotives for us.

Dovetail Games and its content providers would do well to take notes and follow suit!

Final Rating: Green Block: All Clear! You may proceed and make your purchase!

From the developer that brought us the outstanding Union Pacific FEF-3 844 and stablemates comes the prequell project - the AT&N Consolidation
A workhorse rather than a racehhorse, built strong and built to last. Perfect for switching, transfer and local pick up freights
and recently having under-gone an update to bring this original ground breaking model all of the newly created features of
Smokebox's later FEF-3 project, the Connie is now on a par; and a lot more fun to drive. A perfect stepping stone to hone
your skills before moving on to its bigger, brasher cousin.

Definately a MUST HAVE for any steam lover

I'd like to remind all potential purchasers of my steam locos that they are, in my opinion, among the most refined models available for TS. They have a lot of functionality and, unless you're already an expert or you've switched to "Simple" controls, you are unlikely to be able to operate them without first reading the manuals.

The manual for the Consolidation can be found here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\RailWorks\Manuals\EN\Smokebox Lima 2-8-0 Consolidation Manual.pdf

The locomotive looks and sounds great. This is definitly one of my favorite if not my favorite locomitives in train simulator. This is not the first steam locomitive I would buy if you are new to TS2015 because its challenging maintaining steam pressure. Otherwise I have nothing bad to say about it.

This locomotive is so realistic!!! This past summer I got to run a 2-8-2T locomotive and when I think of how the throttle feels when you pull off and when you put on the cylinder ♥♥♥♥♥ it really feels like your actually running a real live steam engine I reccomend this to anyone who is interested in steam locomotives! I need some help on the lubercation still I'm still learning that but still this is an awesome locomotive!

This locomotive add on is amazing. The 1 single person who wrote a negative reveiw, obviously did not read the locomotive manual. If you go to release the brakes by just slamming them open, you will over charge the brakes. If you do not turn on the compressor, you will have no brakes. This locomotive includes:

-A working dynamo system

-Realistic brakes

-Wheel slip

-Working marker lights

-Working lubricator

-Tons of other details that i dont have time to list

This DLC is currently the best eastern US steamer. If you like high quality steamers, this is one you need.
