Maplestory definitely has changed over the years, but I honestly think that people are being a little bit too critical on their opinions of the new updates.

One of the biggest complaints is that the game is too pay-to-win, which I disagree with; most of the items I have seen in the Cash Shop are only temporary boosts and maybe an open storage slot, which isn't much at all.

People also say that the game no longer has its social charm, but I also have something to say about that: To me, the old game seemed to be too dependent on the community. So if you get lost in a dungeon way too high for your level, you HAD to look desperately for someone to lead you out. There are also complaints that the community isn't nearly as big or as nice as it use to be, but that's entirely on the players' fault. Most people leave and blame it on the pay-to-win aspect, but I had just as much fun without forking over a penny as the guy next to me spending his entire college budget on NX Cash. Yes, social interaction with the game seems a bit more empty, but in the time I have been playing it I've had probably just a little bit less of a good time with the community as I remembered it years ago (just without all the @ spams....).

People also ridicule the new gameplay style for being too over-the-top with visuals while being a button spam with no skill needed from the player (*cough* *cough* Zero *cough* *cough*), but honestly I prefer the faster and arguably easier gameplay. Leveling is WAY faster in this "new version" of the game, and it works well when I have a busy schedule and I don't have to spend 20 minutes slowly stabbing at a bunch of stumps.

So overall, I really, honestly think that people are judging the new changes to MS a bit too harshly. Yes, the Cash Shop does give a small handful of advantages to people who pay, but think of it in terms of a mobile game where it would be sweet to have some spare cash to spend, but you can still enjoy 99.99% of the game without it. The community is noticeably smaller and less interactive, but that change has its ups and downs. Still don't like the community? Grab a couple of real-life friends and play together, it's a lot easier to play and faster to level up with the new gameplay.

So give Maplestory another chance if you're really skeptical about all the new stuff. If you still REALLY don't like it, then maybe it's time you move on to something else. I used to be all about Pokemon back in my day, but now it's just sorta "meh" to me. That's fine if you're not interested, but just leave everything alone and stop ragging on this game. But if you honestly want to love it again but can't because of all the new changes, just try it again while looking at the positive side of everything, and you might just have a new appreciation for all of it.

Nostalgia and the big numbers blind me

If you've never heard of Maplestory just skip it. To be completely honest with you the only reason I got this game on Steam was for the nostalgia. I've been playing this game on and off for so many years. (Since 2006) This game was fantastic, but it was ruined by it's absurdly high damage numbers, (which get so damn high that Nexon has to raise the cap on damage) The insane high prices of the free market, and the sheer amount of classes. (There's 32 classes! THIRTY TWO! I was so happy when Pirate first came out.) Oh and the community. Do you like 12 year olds? Well that's basically a majority of the community.

Here's my recent adventures. Recently I played this game AGAIN for the 90th time. I chose Adventurer my bread and butter, I picked Magician and picked the Cleric tree. As soon as you hit level 20 you get bombarded by all these alerts. "JOIN THE NEW CHAT SYSTEM." "EVENT!!!!!" "GACHAPON GACHAPON!" I got very annoyed very quickly. After a very quick leveling grind to level 100, I got my fourth job Bishop. I was very happy that I made it to level 100 because back in my day I've gotten a level 100 Dark Knight. Soon after my 4th job I realised. ♥♥♥♥ there's 150 more levels. I gave up after that. The community annoyed me the grind was boring (Just spammed HS for bonus Xp) and I didn't want to spend any real life money to cube any items or scroll anything.

Final Verdict:
It WAS a good game. The game is no longer enjoyable. But my inner 12 year old makes me want to love it. Nostalgia is the only reason I would see someone play this. The game on it's own is a grind all the way to level 250. The big numbers are blinding and are hard to track, the classes have no "uniqueness" It's all about DAMAGE DAMAGE DAMAGE.

5/10 Nice nostalgia trip, game isn't fun anymore

I originally had a bad review of this game but now I am more or less neutral. This is a fairly old game and has since been slowly dying each passing year. I went on after 5 years and had no idea what was happening. But it is still a fun game, coming off of a game that you pay for and has optional in game transactions I forgot how hard f2p games make you want to buy stuff in them. But now that nexon has actually gotten a support center after all these years and they helped me get my hijacked account back, un-banned, and un-bound from a steam account I can say that the game is now about 50/50. It's not as good as it used to be because games are now mainly in 3d and they stuffed to much stuff in and made it confusing, but it is still fun and nostalgic. Though the game has died alot since the good years back in 2008.
