I'm very mixed on this one. On the one hand, its a charming and often funny adventure where you re-enact LOTR... with legos! I'd never played one of these lego games before, so I didn't know what to expect. What I found was a fun game with plenty of content taking a serious storyline and making it goofy as well.

...And yet this game frustrated me. Alot. For one, it's a terrible console port. There's no mouse support, so you have to do everything with the keyboard. I did manage to get through this, but it makes playing a little awkward. Worse for me is the platforming parts, where you have to jump around to reach hidden areas or to progress further in the levels. Trouble is the camera can be annoying with this, and it is far too easy to fall off ledges or into water, and then have to try again and again. I got seriously frustrated at a few parts, though ultimately I made it through. I'd call the platforming the worst part of this game.

So it's a fun game with some frustrating elements. This is one of those cases where a "maybe" recommendation would be ideal, but ultimately I'll lean towards "yes" on this one because the good bits outweigh the frustrating bits. Have fun! :)

- you already know the story.
+ the story is superb, if you like fantasy.
+ suprises everywhere
+ there's no need for deep character development, because you know them well enough from the movies or the books.

- you've heard it before.
+ it never gets old.

+ the game follows the lore of the movie, while the LEGO "approach" allows for lots of additional content and suprising ideas which never feel out of place.
+ most movie derivatives fail because they try too hard to be exactly like the original movie. This game doesn't even try to be the movie, it simply wants to be the LEGO version of that movie, and it works!

+ originial and genuine, unlike any other game out there (except other LEGOs, of course).
+ think of a style which is as timeless and unique as WoW, but technologically advanced.
+ you travel through a miniature world, which never tries to look too realistic - and that's exactly where the magic comes from (again, think of WoW).
+ you don't have to be a fan of LEGO, a certain taste for unconventional aesthetics will do.

+ relaxing, but entertaining.
+ has a casual feel to it, but there are many "serious" 18+ AAA titles out there which are a lot dumber than this one (I mean a lot!). There is no tutorial, thanks LEGOD! Finding out how the game works and what you're supposed to do and maybe stumble upon a new secret or minigame by accident is part of the fun here.
- don't rush through the game, you'll miss the game!
+- no challenge in terms of fights or puzzles, it's all about keeping the flow. If you bring some patience along though, you'll find many suprises in this world. Lots of interactive hotspots and little secrets. Explorers will be rewarded! And by rewards, I mean interactive stuff, not that "superegosword +2".

+ it appeals to the child inside you, but it's never immature thanks to a world-renownded story and lots of self irony. It's not just the movie made into a game, it's a different approach to the same story. It feels like light satire without making fun of the original.
+ so light-hearted, it'll make your heart reach for the sky! Think of the opposite of Dark Souls.
+ brings back the magic of the good old gaming days. Don't ask me why - magic can't be explained.
- stay away if you're the "more of the same" type of guy. This game is unlike any other, a true creative achievement. All LEGOs follow the same formula, but this is my first LEGO game and noone forces you to play them all. Just rule them all!
-if this game doesn't make you smile, go see a doctor.

I am neither a big LEGO fan nor a big LOTR fan (I mean, I have seen the movies, but that is the extent of my interest in LOTR).

But this game is super beautiful, the game mechanics are easy to grasp, and puzzles while somewhat challenging at times, never held me up for more than a minute or two. The devs has done well to find a way to nearly-constantly trigger my brain's pleasure center (with rewards, sounds, and visuals) that I don't tire of playing it.

I can safely recommend this title to gamers of all ages and skill-levels. :)

Buy with impunity!

I've played many LEGO Games (Star Wars 1+2, Indie 1+2, Potter). This is my first one where the LEGO figures speak. Quite a change. It is nice and a little sad: The game cites many sentences of the motion picture and yet you do not have the original voices all of the time - it's kind of confusing. Nevertheless it uses very often the original voice acting from the movie. The combination works well. So play it in English for the original voices. The German edition has only new voices, no archive material from the dubbed films. That works also, but you do not get the complete LEGO movie feeling. The strong points are the new dialogues that wrap the story up and introduce minor changes from the original.
The game is fun to play - especially in local coop, but it is not very different from any other LEGO game. Just another franchise with new minifigures and new funny videos. If you just don't have enough you might buy this one. The textures of not LEGO specific things look quite aweful. They should get better game by game and not keep the graphics from 2004...

5 minutes in and i was already hooked. i am absolutely loving this game. makes me want to watch LOTR again.

it also has a funny twist on things in most of the cut scenes. one of the rare times when i utterly enjoy the cut scenes and wish they were longer.

Play this with someone who doesn't do much gaming, and if you both enjoy the license, you will have a blast. You can't die, and it's never hard. Just cute and endearing.
