My Take: Think Pipe Mania and Tron Lightcycle. Redirect the virus' infection by rotating the circuits while dodging the anti-virus countermeasure drone spiders. Elements such as locked circuits and red game over blocks get thrown in later. Eventually, you get to a point where it's solely based on timing your moves around the spiders. Tedious.

Graphics: The character and level design are simple, but worked for what they are. The little cutscenes follow an art style reminiscent of what you would see on Cartoon Network in the mid 90's, just not as good. Also the resolution is locked at 1280x720 so if you switch the settings to 1980x720, you get a horrible border all the way around the screen.

Sound: So little going on here that the only thing worth mentioning is the respawn noise is annoying.

Music: Surprisingly solid with a track or two I'd actually listen to outside the game.

Controls: Simple enough bindings, you've got directional controls, glitch drop, and circuit rotation. The game recommends the controller, but you can honestly make do with the keyboard. I couldn't tell any difference in the gameplay between the two.

Did I Finish It: No.

Will I Finish It: Eventually, but I'm so irritated with the later levels, I'm taking an indefinite break.

Should You Buy It: Only if the concept interests you, snag it in a bundle or if you see it for 80% or less.

The idea is interesting and puzzles seem to be interesting for a while too, but it became fast just a boring chore and hard. Can't tell why exactly, but simply did not seem interesting enough to play more. If you like fast puzzling and memorizing trails through a maze, go for it, else, play some puzzle game.

A really interesting action-puzzle game with wonderful little mechanics, however later puzzles get so convoluted that a walkthrough is necessary to all but the best of puzzle solvers.

This game is well crafted, however the mechanics are more twitch reaction based and less puzzle solving. Since the core goal is to alway solve the tile turning puzzle this becomes frustrating quickly. The developers tried to compensate by allowing the player to automatically skip levels, but this doesn't correct the core problem since the level after the one you skipped has the same problems.

If you have always wanted a twitch reaction tile puzzle game, this one may be perfect for you. Otherwise you may lose interest quickly, as I did.

Wow. I was really surprised at how unfun the gameplay actually was. Mixing up several different gaming styles – contemplative puzzling, timers and fast-paced enemy avoidance – apparently didn't pan out that well in this case.

The gameplay's two major inspirations would appear to be Qix and Pipe Mania (or the hacking puzzle in Bioshock, shudder). Instead of drawing lines like in Qix, you navigate a grid of Pipe Mania -type puzzle parts and manually rotate them one at a time while avoiding enemies.

I kind of want to like Tom – the writing's amusing and the production's solid. However, the core gameplay just isn't fun.

the game is fun but generic. its insanely easy up until the final section where difficulty takes on a steep learning curve and becomes nearly impossible to play. luckily by that time the maker gives you enough level skip tokens to get through and see the pointless ending. not a terrible game but not recommended.

Someone should remove the "puzzle" tag. This is definitely not in this category. Most of the time this game consists of dexterity and agility challenges.
This could have been a good puzzle game and THERE ARE pretty good puzzles in there. Sometimes.

Nobody likes having their ideas stolen. For Dr. X, it's more than just a clever invention, but his entire livelihood being taken away by a mega corporation, framing and imprisoning him in the process just to make it abundantly clear what a bunch of greedy pricks they are. Unfortunately, they forgot about a little virus named Tom, who's about to turn their billion dollar company into a pile of rubble, one computer at a time.

A Virus Named Tom is something like a pimped out Pipe Mania. Guiding Tom through computer mainframes, you need to redirect the flow of the hack by twisting panels until the infection has spread across the entire board. Simple in theory, but in execution it becomes quite an elaborate challenge once anti-hack bugs, hidden and unmovable tiles, and the intricate maze designs start to pile on more and more things to keep track of. One of the most impressive things about AVNT is how it balances these elements into a gradual but brisk increase in difficulty. Rarely did I feel overwhelmed by any of the mechanics, instead rather impressed with myself that I was able to solve what initially appear to be incredibly involved puzzles. It's constantly rewarding and satisfying to progress, even with the surprisingly long single player story (which doesn't take into account the entire separate coop campaign which I've yet to even dip into).

As a puzzle game, A Virus Named Tom resides pleasantly in the realm of the best pick up and play arcade classics. It's challenging and enjoyable whether in short bursts or drawn out sessions as you try to attain a gold medal on every level, and never once managed to outstay its welcome for me however long I spent with it. It also features a fantastic electronic soundtrack, and some rather charming and humorous cutscenes which somehow manage to make mass hysteria and deconstruction feel lighthearted and amusing. Really, if a game can't sell itself to you with a dog that doesn't poop, I don't even know what more there is to say.

This game is a puzzle game. Except, the puzzles aren't difficult, just time consuming. But it has enemies, so it's sort of an action game! Except the enemies are predictable, and being hit by one only serves to reduce the time remaining that you have to solve the particular puzzle until you 'run out of energy'. At which point you need to start the 'puzzle' over again. This game then quickly devolves into two kinds of levels:

1. Long and boring puzzle levels where enemies are hardly a threat, and sometimes pieces of the puzzle are obscured so you either have to rely on memorization or gueswork.

2. Insultingly simple puzzles that are only made 'difficult' by a pointless overabundance of enemies, which, due to the fact that you are limited by a grid, are impossible to dodge unless you literally wait for the perfect timing, jump in, rotate pieces of the puzzle, and jump out before you get hit and waste your time.

Wasting your time is the name of the game, here. This game is not a puzzle game, nor an action game, nor a game in any sense of the word. It is a time waster, in the purest sense. Buying it is, predictably, a waste of time.

A solid puzzle game with fun co-op and competitive multiplayer to go along with loads and loads of personality. The cinematics are wonderfully realized and play out in the great retro-future aesthetic of a 1950's sci-fi movie. The game mechanics are familiar, heavily inspired by games like Pipe Dream, but there's a lot of new ideas here too. The game introduces new mechanics at a very nice pace and always keeps the player entertained with between levels email exchanges and cinematics.

A Virus Named TOM is the sort of indie game I hope to see more of, simple on the surface with hidden complexity, well designed and above all else extremely polished.

First few levels are way too easy.. but other levels are almost impossible to complete! great thing are tokens, you can skip levels with thoose, but that's not enough. Anyway, this game is looking great, but the levels screwed it up.

That game is advertised as a puzzle game. However, most puzzles are fairly simple, and the difficulty comes from 2 additions :
- Either there are hidden tiles that force you to remember the layout, relying on rote memory rather than actually thinking about the solution.
- Or the difficulty is in the execution, where the solution is known but you have to race around enemies to execute it.

This is not a puzzle game, this is an action game. And since the controls aren't intuitive, it's not even a fun action game. The memory-based puzzles are infuriating, and the action ones can also be frustrating, because the floaty controls (with gamepad) can generate some mistakes and stupid deaths.

That's too bad, because the character design and the sound design were well done, giving Tom a fun personality. That unfortunately isn't enough to redeem the faults in the gameplay

However i do give kudos to the devs to include skip tokens, which allow you to skip puzzles that you're stuck too long on. At least you're not gonna rage against a specific level.

Meh, it's ok... I got this as part of the Humble Bundle Indievision Weekly Bundle... so it really was just a bonus tack on to the movies.

I think the most compelling reason to play this is to beat your friends' scores.

The first set of levels I quite enjoyed. Then, in the second set of levels, even though new components were being added, I felt as if the game was slowing down. This game is not very enjoyable once you get stuck into the meat of it, and I would only buy it if you really like the look of it. It is not a game to buy on a whim in case you 'may like it'. If this is how you buy it, I can assure you, it will not be a good purchase. Chances are you'll buy it by accident in some Humble Bundle anyway.

I bet the regular viewers are taking their hats off in surprise and thinking, "Chris reviewing a not underrated Indie game?". This may surprise you, but I've started trying to review less stupidly underrated games, for more recognition. I've actually recently friended JonTron and I've wanted to make a new review since I haven't made a new one.
This game really isn't new, I've just had it for a long time and never gotten a chance to review it. But A Virus Named TOM is actually pretty fun. It throws you into the action quickly and easily, but eventually, after two levels it gets hard as a rock that was cooked like hardtack, but that's one thing I just love about it. I'm really not one for very hard games because I'm not the most skilled "gamer", if you could even call me that, out there, but this particular game I really like. The plot is fairly typical; you're built by an evil scientist to destroy the world because he wants revenge for something that happened that no one really specified, but that makes it all the more better, because it takes the typical plot and makes it bareable by having some decent humor thrown into a bowl and mixed with standable graphics and some enjoyable gameplay. Honestly, I haven't played much of it because with hard games like this I usually just say, "Balls to it, I'll beat it later," and end up never playing it again, but I wanted to play this again, and again, and again. I really like the way the games soundtrack is very 32-bit but at the same time sounds really nice. The only bad things I've found out is that the game sort of drags on and gets boring after a while and multiplayer is annoying because even if you try as hard as you can you still end up blocking your fellow virus from doing their own thing so the level ends up being practically impossible to beat.
When I first played this I thought you'd be able to take control of the dog robot and gnaw people's throats out of their neck, but you end up just giving it a virus, then they go out of stock and you move on to the next part.
The art style is particularly nice looking due to the fact it's the type of art that is a load of squares and triangles and it looks like the stuff they used in that one 1980's futuristic kids cartoon, whatever it was called, but it's kind of annoying at times.
The puzzle gameplay is pretty challenging and it's actually kind of fun, in the 'you've been playing Portal 2 for 7 hours straight and you still don't know what the bloody hell is going on yet' kind of way. But at the same time, it has no difficulty curve. It's just a random barrage of some partly impossible levels and hell easy levels and it's kind of just trying to be the next best thing, which messes with what the game could've been. I see potential in this game, but they messed it up.

4/10, nice try, though.

This game is essentially shovelware. If you were so impressed with the main mechanic of the game that you must get it, your tastes are wrong. No exceptions, I'm the gatekeeper.
