The first part of my review is going to be quite positive, but the second part, is going to rip into this game for everything it does to insult players, and itself. Here goes!
Watching reviews, the trailers and other videos on this game, I was highly curious, it looked really playable, like the Terraria of MOBA games. When I first bought it, my first few games were alot of fun. As I began to get better at it, and rise the ranks, it was even more fun! I started to favouritise certain characters, until I had settled on Scoop, as my go to character for every game. I felt my skill as Scoop getting better with every game I played, to the point where most of the time, I could almost humiliate other players with my accuracy in jumping along with them as they try to escape and finishing them with well timed and aimed sword slashes.
This game is the bomb! I thought. But the bomb had yet to hit.
At around 100 games in, I started to notice a severe flaw in this game. The same problem that mostly all online, hotkey based games with PVP elements have. Stuns.
You see, most, if not ALL characters, have a way to stun you for a moment, either to impede your progress, or hinder your escape. However, SOME characters go way beyond what is necessary in any game. Let me break down why stuns have made me give this game a thumbs down. Any game that has them, adds a level of infuriation to the gameplay. In my opinion, without stuns, games are better off. You're having fun and all of a sudden your character flies across the screen, or is bolted to the ground and can't move, or in some other way you lose control of your character. This is a demoralising, infuriating and game-ruining trend that needs to stop entirely.
I would give this game a massive thumbs up if it weren't for these few characters which make me literally uninstall it and wonder why the hell I even bothered buying it in the first place.
The graphics in this game are great, but the design choice for some of the characters adds to the infuriation factor. A little girl with pigtails that spits on anyone who has had a multi dimensional or psychedelic experience by using her 'third eye' to fire missiles at people and turn her 'aura' into an electrically charged death field that lets her fly. That's ..... not how the third eye works..... I know this game is a cartoon but that's kind of like having a character who has a mole on his face... and the mole comes to life and attacks enemies.... like no that's not how moles work.... A certain degree of facts should be applied when you want to use a theme like the third eye.
Not to mention, the third eye in this world is primarily a gateway in our minds to a connection with the planet Earth, and what do planets want from us when we enter these places? Peace.... stop the destruction.... stop killing.... stop pollution...
To even insinuate, let alone portray that a living creature, especially a little girl with pigtails who giggles around the battlefield, would retain a physical ability from visiting these mind realms, let alone a harmful one, is a pure insult to anyone with any knowledge in the field.
Moving on. The music is GREAT. It makes the game better. It reminds me of old N64 classics like Diddy Kong Racing and Banjo Kazooie!
As for gameplay, it plays fluidly and is fast paced. It's enjoyable to play. Except when your character gets launched halfway across the screen, then hooked onto a wall, leaving you dangling, defenseless while the entire enemy team is free to just kill you, without having to put any effort into anything other than keeping the crosshair on you.
The infuriation factor is elevated even higher by the fact that most of the time, unless you play exclusively with friends (which I highly recommend) you're going to be playing in random games. Which means that most of the time, synergy is not on your side. Meaning those guys with the insanely overpowered and unnecessarily long lasting stun abilities are going to be doing it to you and your team, rather than the other way around. Unless you play as those characters. But if you're like me, it's going to be too late to bother learning to play those game ruining characters, because you've already settled on your favourite, and put like a hundred hours into honing your skills as them.
My rundown of the unnecessary characters is as follows:
Admiral Swiggins- He has an anchor that, if it hits you, hooks you to the ground for up to 5 seconds, disallowing you to move beyond a certain point unless the anchor is destroyed. If you're hit with this, and another of his teammates starts to creep up, you may aswell stop pushing buttons because you're going to be unable to move for long enough for them to kill you with simple auto attacks. It gives them FAR too much free time. Stuns are bad as they are in most games, but this one takes the cake as the ultimate worst in videogame history. In a game that's about twitch reactions and skill, having a stun is a bad move, having one that lasts 5 seconds ruins the game.
Sentry- It's not only a stun, it's a black hole. It pulls you and anyone else on your team to the center, and if he upgrades it, it explodes too, dealing heavy damage. Put Sentry on a team with a Clunk and a Voltar and everyone at the center of this black hole will die immediately. It's unnecessary, again making it way too easy for teams with Sentry to lock down and guarantee a kill.
Leon- While not in possession of a stun so to speak, his ability to pull you a short distance, is sort of a stun and the fact he can do it when a moment ago, he wasn't there, puts him into the unnecessary category for me. Stealth in this game was a bum move, there is literally no reason why in this kind of action based, side scrolling MOBA, there needs to be a character who can be invisible permanently, and then also have a tool to pull you back into a fight you had escaped from. Not to mention, his base movement speed is higher than most characters, so if he wants you dead, you're most likely dead.
His invisibility should be a short duration ability, not a permanent hiding like a battyboy until he's in the perfect tactical advantage to attack ability. It seems like Ronimo just wanted to follow suit with other games of this type and incorporate at least one rogue style character with invisibility, without thinking that maybe it doesn't have a place, or maybe it will just annoy people more than anything. Leon is currently the most hated character in videogame history, and that is a solid fact. Congratulations on making that accolade yours to behold, Ronimo.
Derpl- While his stun is a little harder to hit with than most other characters (unless you're chasing him) it lasts a hell of alot longer, and if you get hit with it in a bad situation, it's not only WAY MORE TIME than is needed for him to change to siege mode and hit you with a nuke, while shooting you with a machine gun, often killing you outright, but its WAY LONGER than is needed for anyone else nearby to jump in and finish you off.
Finally, Coco- She's the one who sends your character flying halfway across the screen. I don't need to elaborate on how this is fundamentally game breaking, and rage inducing. On top of it, her projectile that does this can travel through solid objects, meaning if you think you're safe behind a turret, teleporting back to base on low health, she can just fire it in your escape path and kill you anyway. She can use it to knock you into her team, knock you into her turrets, knock you AWAY from your own turrets, kill you through scenery, and on top of all of this, it does a large amount of damage, fully buffed it will deal up to half of your health in damage. People who play as Coco need to be shot in the leg and have diseased rabbits hump the bullethole.
Overall, DO NOT BUY! If you DO buy, then you'll find it's akin to starting smoking. Too addictive to quit, but killing you and making you stress
