Just Updated: Awesomenauts 2.3 - Secrets of Space

April 10th, 2014

We have just released Update 2.3 for Awesomenauts, which means Penny Fox is now officially the 17th member of the Awesomenauts! All users with access to the Starstorm expansion will be able to dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge around the battlefield with this new super-agile 'Naut. Take care not to get slowed or snared though, as Penny is at her most vulnerable when she can't use her speed to her advantage! Check out her Character Showcase video over here!

Update 2.3, which we have dubbed "Secrets of Space", is the biggest update we have ever released for Awesomenauts. The update does not only add a new 'Naut to the mix, but also brings an incredible amount of balance tweaks (with all characters receiving some balance love), three new skins (including the long-awaited and oft-rumored Cynical Vinnie skin), a new in-game song, and a substantial array of improved graphical effects. The patch notes are over six pages long, and can not be included in this post. You can find the full notes over here, but we'll summarize some of the most important points below.

In addition to all the new content and balance changes, we've polished up many of the in-game effects. Solar coins are now shinier, airstrikes pack a little more visual punch, Froggy G's Splash Dash looks a little splashier, and a lot of other effects received a little love. The Droppod entry does look a little more violent and a little less safe right now, but that's not something the Awesomenauts can't handle.

There is also a new in-game song called "I'll Make You a Star, Baby." Starstorm owners will find this song added to the regular in-game music mix! It's another awesome track by our friends at Sonic Picnic, and you can listen to it through this link if you can't wait to check it out!

With 2.3 live, we'll be turning our attention to the next Awesomenaut that is chomping at the bit to jump into the fray! We'll have more to reveal on Sentry X-58 in the coming months, and will also be working on completing the locally stored replays!

Stay awesome!

Awesomenauts is truly an awesome game, it combines traditional MOBA (DOTA, LoL, etc) style gameplay with 2d platforming.

The gameplay is addictive, skill based and tons of fun to play with friends. There are a few annoying issues, such as players being able to leave and rejoin the game without consequence in order to pick a counter to your character.

I recommend the game to anyone regardless of how new or experienced you are to gaming.

A great entry level "Moba" game. Awesomenauts with its quirky characters, "saturday morning cartoon" art style, fast-paced gameplay and diverse skills offers a unique blend of accessibility, configurability and depth, making it an ideal choice for those who want to sink their teeth into the Moba genre.

I have to admit though, the game is still not a 100% balanced and for some characters, there is little to no variety in builds that are viable when it comes to competetive play. Be ready to be stomped by certain builds that excel on certain maps frequently. Nevertheless, while frustrating at moments, at 20-30 minutes per session, you won't have to spend too much of your time in "those games".

Replayability: As of writing this review, Awesomenauts has stolen over 750 hours of my free time, and it is bound to rob me for many years to come. With the multiple match ups (meaning how good certain characters are against other certain characters, on a scale of equal player skill) no session has ever felt the same.

Arenas: I cannot compare it to the likes of DOTA or LoL, since I havent played either, but coming from someone whos played the likes of Powerstone 2 for the Dreamcast, I can tell you that this game offers a robust experience. The arenas are structured in such a way that allow you to go miles by taking an inch.

Characters: The prime beef. Ronimo takes a bit of slack when it comes to balancing certain character traits and abilities, half of which I would say are very much deserved, but at the end of the day using the character in a way that outplays your opponents strengths and capitalizes on there weaknesses will outrule any match up against you. You are bound to find a character, if not half the cast, to your liking~

Single Player: There is none. This game will not engage you if not played online. Future DLC will patch in alot of match customizablity, so I cant say much on how they will integrate it, but not including the Starstorm DLC, I would not reccomend this game to anyone who is timid of the online environment.

Art: The game is advertised to look and sound like a Saturday morning cartoon. The Musical Score matches this, with catchy rhythmic beats that loop in the background and character specific that play ala reward for killing sprees. The graphics, not so much. Dont get me wrong, the sprites are colorful (albiet small in relation to everything else on screen, but still packed with personality) and the levels looks gorgously bright and tell a story, but the only thing "Saturday Cartoon" about it is the intro video and character portraits. Still, you get what you get, and if youre a fan of the child friendly art style, you wont be disappointed.

I was totally baffled when I launched this game for the first time. When I saw the store page, it looked like a boring old platformer, but my friend convinced me to buy it. This game is actually an immersing, high action multiplayer experience, with a lot of good things to look forward to in the future.

Awesomenauts is a 2D Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, MOBA for short. This game is available for €10, and offers you lots of fun for that price. You don't have to pay for anything else, except when you want to buy skins for the 15 awesomenauts. These skins are pure cosmetic, they won't give you an advantage in-game.
So, what is this game all about? Well, you play as one of the 15 available awesomenauts and you have to destroy the enemy base. Sounds easy right? Well, to do that you have to fight your way through turrets, robotic minions and of course the other team. At the start of the game you try to earn some 'Solar', the gold of Awesomenauts, and buy upgrades for your awesomenaut with it. And you try to kill enemies of course. Unlike MOBAs like Dota or LoL, this game doesn't feature items or a leveling system. Aeesomenauts also doesn't have a laning stage, which means you can be ganked every 30 seconds. After a while, one team will have more upgrades and more Solar than the other team and they will push to the other teams base. And then of course destroy it.

Awesomenauts offers a lot of fun, and in beautiful graphics. The game feature's Offline Training and allows you to practice with friends. It also offers ranked matches and 15 awesome awesomenauts.

Awesomenauts will keep you behind your computer for at least 75 hours. If you want to collect every upgrade and get Prestige 10, you will be playing Ronimo Games little game for at least 150 hours.

Score: 84/100
