Binary Domain is a halfway decent 3rd person shooter with a LOT of rough edges and weird bits. I got it for free from a Sega promotion, and I would have been ♥♥♥♥♥♥ if I'd paid any actual money for it.

The shooter aspects of the game are fine, nothing spectacular but competently executed. I shot a lot of robots in the junk; can't complain about that. The boss fights are pretty fun, although they have a tendency to stunlock you in weird ways. The main character's assault rifle is upgradeable, and I was shredding robot limbs like leafy greens on a Food Network show by the end. There were one or two "puzzle moments" where I had to use the gun's "bosonic charge" or whatever to break barrels that weren't having any of this "bullet" business.

There's some squad tactics and such, but this is a mess. There's a voice command feature that is a neat gimmick for about thirty seconds, as those things are wont to be. My squadmates rarely did anything useful, and at LEAST once per encounter they decided that standing between me and the enemy was a smart thing to do. If I get good kills, they compliment me, with the same phrase ad nauseum. All of them are just-this-side-of-racist caricatures of stereotypical nationalities. The French robot in particular stopped just short of going "oh hoh hoh" at the end of every phrase. The dialog is pretty bad, and it's delivered pretty poorly to boot. The audio in cutscenes is poorly balanced, with the dialog being drowned out by the music.

The plot is... convoluted, full of holes, and becomes utter garbage in the last act. I caught bits and pieces of it, at one point they were talking about having sex with robots, there was a cutscene where I swear a dude was feeling up a rack of servers, and in another part there was a literal triple cross. A character changed sides and then changed sides again within the span of about 2 minutes.

Binary Domain is also a pretty awful console port. The mouse and keyboard controls are okay for the most part, but they're totally busted in several sequences involving fixed guns and a "tank" sequence I hit at one point. I was throwing my mouse across the pad 5-10 times to get my character to turn 90 degrees in any direction. The gamepad controls might be better, but it didn't work with my Xbox One controller at all. Trying to move the camera just made it spin in circles. Often times, the button prompts were maddeningly nonspecific, telling me to press a mouse button but not which one, or just showing a "[_]" icon instead of a key.

So it's a halfway decent shooter with a lot of worthless experimental elements, terrible AI, an overly convoluted story, and it's a bad port of a console game. Metal Gear Solid fans will love it!

Binary Domain is a Sci-Fi RPG/Third-Person Shooter occurring in near-future Japan. You play as Dan Marshall, generic white action hero, as you discover the truth behind events which violate the New Geneva Convention. Since I don't write long reviews, I'll use a pro/con format.

Pros:
-Good cover mechanics.
-Enemies fall apart as you shoot them, and will crawl to you if you shoot their legs off, or will shoot allies if you get a headshot.
-Graphics are nice, considering the release date of the game.
-Runs on an i3 with HD 3000 graphics.
-Story is very Blade Runner.

Cons:
-Not a whole lot of variety of guns.
-I have the collapsing bridge bug, had a friend play past that.
-Is rather repetitive after a while since you're shooting robots, although said robots use cover and try to flank you.
-I personally hate Quick-Time Events

This game is an underrated gem.Besides a couple of bosses that overstay their welcome, the game offers great shooting mechanics & stages and a good feel of destruction. The character cast is on par with ME and very likeable albeit there is almost no backstory about them.If you like to bust a ♥♥♥♥ ton of robots and engage with a dude bro,a british squad that despises you,an abnormally pleasant mannared french robot and an asian female counterpart of garrus,go get the game.

Short Ver:
A simple cover-based TPS with satisfying and visceral combat.

-Strengths
>Good art direction
>Good enemy design
>"Actual" boss fights, a rarity in shooters nowadays.
>Game is paced well and doesn't drag-on at any particular point
>Locational damage/destruction for enemies
>Entertaining cast of characters

-Weaknesses
>Short length
>Low replayability
>Voice commands are poorly implemented (but luckily, not mandatory in the slightest)
>A few characters are very ineffectual to the overall story
>Questionable port quality (the game runs fine, but the positioning of the keybinds are very strange)

A hidden gem from a previous generation.
Binary Domain is set in a pretty "standard" futuristic setting, where robots and AI in all sorts of applications have become the norm.
You play the role of Dan Marshall, a wise-cracking ex-marine who is part of something known as a "Rust Crew", an international black-ops task force sent to deal with violations of the geneva convention (in the case of this story, "making robots that look like humans"). The job this time

The story is not particularly stand-out. It's not bad though. The premise it pokes at is pretty interesting: "What is it to be human", essentially.

The characters are pretty fun and the game clearly doesn't want you to take it seriously. A lot of banter floats around during and between missions.

The gameplay is where this game REALLY shines though. It's pretty much just another cover shooter, but it has an INSANELY satisfying limb-based destruction system. Nearly every enemy you can fight will have their armor and limbs stripped away by weapons fire.
You can shoot off their arms (individually) and reduce their offensive capibilities.
You can shoot off their heads and mess up their IFF tracker, causing them to attack enemies instead of you.
You can shoot off their legs and have them crawl on the ground.
It really never gets old. Such a simple system, but so very satisfying.

Something also worth noting is something the game calls the "trust" system. Characters have a fluctuating level of "trust" in you that dictates if they will respond to orders you give. High levels of trust means they have little reason to deny your orders, low levels means they'll often ignore them.
Trust can be increased in a few ways:
>Responding in a manner they like to prompts (i.e., if somebody asks you "can you keep it up" and you say "yes", their trust will probably rise)
>Killing enemies in a fast and efficent manner
Conversely, trust drops when you do things characters dislike, such as shooting them, or responding inappropriately.

You can also answer prompts and give orders through voice commands. Though I see little need for this outside of "immersion" as holding tab and pressing a button during a fight sufficed for me.

I haver been trying to get this game to work for several months now to no avail. I have given up.

The game needs to run the Configuartion tool before you can play it. In the Configuartion tool I set all my graphics settings and options and go to save it but wait... there is no option to save your config? That's right, you cannot save your config. So I X out of it hoping that it will save in the background, I try to launch the game again... PLEASE RUN THE CONFIG TOOL.

I guess SEGA doesn't want me to play the game I purchased from them.

I also guess SEGA doesn't want me to purchase any other games from them.

Good job SEGA, you lost a customer of 25 years. I still have my Genesis, but I wont look at it too fondly anymore.

EDIT: I fixed it, no thanks to SEGA. This game is installed on my projector PC which is 720p. The conflig tool wont show the SAVE & QUIT button if your resolution is 720, so I changed the PCs resolution to 1080 and the button appeared. I then saved my setting and changed it back to 720p and it now works.

This is a really stupid issue with the game that should have been fixed years ago. I had tried maybe 3-4 times to get this game running and it was a resolution issue this whole time...

Fun third-person strategical shooter that did not initially recieve much recognition. Binary Domain uses a unique system that recognizes voice commands to control your squad and has become something of a cult classic. Has lots of enemy variety in bosses, and an interesting enough story to hold your attention. Great fun

The first level is complete and utter rubbish. The two characters act like little kids, running away from every situation they see fit. The voice commands are stupid, the AI is blind, sometimes acting like they are in a pressure situation when there is no enemies around in a 20 mile radius. If you manage to get through the first level, you meet some very interesting characters in Charlie, Faye and that little asian girl from the yakuza in mission 3, they make the game feel great and fun. Also the setting and story seem original. For 15 bucks I can recommend it, maybe wait for a sale to be sure.

This game is surprisingly good.
I didn't expect too much because I played the start of the game on Xbox360, and I didn't have good feeling on this game.
But here on pc, we can customize the FOV for the game, and it feels better.

Story is not bad, more importantly, the cutscenes are great and cool. Music are also great.

There are some issues with game settings, so be patient about this.

Got the game at a Sega giveaway! And it's absolutly brilliant.

Pros:
- Good to shoot robots and the bosses down (much better than humans)
- Great story!
- Fun characters.

Cons:
- Real messed up controls, but can be fixed through a guide in the workshop.
- Voice command gets annoying; many times i scream "Wait" to the team, they think I said "Great" and that I taunted them, reducing confidence. But game can be played with the comm off, and it's still worth it.

did not play much but enjoying it a lot so far. The voice recognition is not 100% accurate. Cant say is the mic cause I just got a Corsair VOID wireless headset. But still enjoyable. Just dont have people around you trying to talk cause the game might be hear them and recognize what they are saying :)

Pros

-Sega still know how to do it.
-interesting characters.
-engaging story.
-graphics are good
-classic third person shootem up
-enemies are so satisfying to kill as pieces of them fall apart.
-easy to pick up fast paced combat.
-cut scenes are entertaining.
-game is cheap (I got it for 70p)
-pick your own squad.
-enemy and team AI are great.
-your team mates have a trust bond with you and can decide whether or not they should follow orders.
-cover system works well.

Cons

-speech recog stagers gameplay and dialogue situations.
-game isn't very well known by the gaming community (sequel/follow up doesn't look possible).
-starting controls are questionable but can be fixed with a change in the key bindings.
-horribly underreated.
-AI sometimes can walk in your line of fire.
-Multiplayer is pretty much non existant.

Overall a really nice hidden treasure from the giants of the old world, Sega, It's good to see that they didn't ruin what people loved about their shooters, simple and gorgeous.

I like this a lot. Got it as part of a Sega giveaway. It's the sci-fi elements of Terminator and Blade Runner, mixed into a third-person squad based shooter.

The controls can be a bit weird, and the main characters are more "stereotype" than they could've been, but the story and the gameworld are definitely something I can invest myself in.

Definitely worth playing if you enjoy classic sci-fi themes about our use of robots, and the moral/ethical troubles of just how far we should take that kind of technology.

I don't like shooters but I really loved this game. It's fun, combat is good, story is nice (for a shooter anyway) and the voice acting is really good. You can upgrade your/your companions weapon and buy "augmentations" for you and them. I had absolutely no issues with the controls. The downside is that the your teammates cross your path and get shot and I could only get the FOV I wanted by changing it at UserCFG.txt and making it read only

I think the game is an underrated gem and I wish it had a sequel

Binary Domain is yet another example why we as gamers don't deserve nice things anymore. Great titles like this one remain in the shadows while we make rich companies releasing mediocre, badly optimized, unfinished products. We ♥♥♥♥♥ about titles with non-existing story modes, no single player content, dlc, microtransactions, but at the same time we only notice the real gems when we get them for a couple of euros ages after their release. People refusing to pay for amazing games like this one and Spec Ops: The Line, when at the same time paying tens maybe hundreds of euros for unecessary costumes or crappy hats and knives.

Almost every part of Binary Domain is great. The story is interesting, the pacing is spot on, the characters and their interactions are memorable, it has multiple endings, shooting robots is a blast, the bosses are huge and fun to deal with, the AI is pretty solid for the most part, the length of the story mode is decent (around 10 hours), there is replayability with playing levels with different members or seeing the different conclusions of the story. Again, what else to you want from a third person shooter?

Does it have any flaws? Well, the advertised use of the mic to issue orders doesn't work very well, but this is barely an issue since you can assign the orders to button inputs. Dialogues can be a bit hammy at times. A couple of boss battles drag a bit. But for the most part it's just nitpicking.

Again the reason I wrote this review is because I wanted to express how sad it is that promising ips will never see a new release simply because of the way we, the gamers, shaped the modern gaming industry. As much as a few people ♥♥♥♥♥ about microtransactions, short campaigns, but storylines, focus on multiplayer, at the end of the day this is what the majority out there wants. Of course there are exceptions, mostly action rpgs but not every single player title should need a 100 hour length to worth the cost of admission.

Binary Domain is a third person shooter based around the concept of man creating a true A.I. that has been living with humans unnoticed till now. They are called hollow children and they don’t even know they are robots. Your job is to go into Tokyo and take down the company who created them.

The story in this game was a little slow at first and wasn’t to captivating till about the 4th or 5th chapter in and then it really picks up. The characters and their cheesy dialog between each other is what you are used to seeing a lot of times from Sega. This is not a bad thing though as it is funny at times and fits the game well.

Through the game you will need try and build their trust with you so that they will not hesitate to help you when needed. This also can change the outcome of the ending. This is all done through dialog and your actions with them. You will have a total of 7 characters on your team but can only take 2 with you on levels most of the time. You can also issue commands to them like regroup, fire, and cover me. This can also be done through voice commands through a mic which I didn’t try out myself but did seem like a cool feature.

When in combat you can use objects and walls to hide behind for cover. Weapons are based around your normal arsenal of assault rifle, shotgun, sniper rifle, etc. Each character has a personal gun and skills you can upgrade by making purchases from store kiosks you find throughout the levels. Money for the store is earned when you kill enemies and bonuses can be achieved too by doing this like headshots or multi kills. It may take multiple playthroughs to max everything out.

Graphics still hold up pretty well and some of the enemy designs were pretty good. Voice acting was good and fit the character animations pretty good. It’s kind of like a B movie which in my opinion is always enjoyable.

I did have some issues with the game. At times when you are in gunfights your damn teammates would walk right in front of you and get hit by your gunfire or block your view. If they get hit this also drops their trust with you. Camera was also a pain at times. Mainly when you would get knocked down by an enemy. It would focus on you laying on the ground and if you tried to look around it would snap back to your character. Characters were also very sluggish getting up or getting help to get up which then some enemies would constantly stomp on you so you couldn’t get away. It wasn’t often but when it happened it sucked. Last one was in one level you are riding in a vehicle and you have to shoot down some guys in the air but the vehicle swerves constantly which jars you back and forth like every two seconds causing you to fight with trying to aim and actually hit something.

Overall it was a fun game to play and the story really pulled through for me in the end. There are also multiple endings for repeat playthroughs if you’d like to see them all. It has a multiplayer option too but I didn’t try it out so not sure if there is anyone even playing it anymore or if it works.

Binary Domain is like if they made Gears of War into an anime, and replaced the enemies with robots.
It's also surprisingly funny at times. Oh! And there's a French robot named Cain.

Verdict: Solid sale game. Looks pretty even by today's standards, and the gunplay is responsive and fun.

Definitely worth playing if you like games like Gears of War, Mass Effect, Metal Gear or movies like James Bond, Terminator, GI Joe. It has a feel of you being part of a unique squad of GI Joes. It has the background storyline similar to Terminator, it has the combat feel of Gears of War mixed with Metal Gear, and it has the team building aspects of Mass Effect.

The game is quite linear and feels like an Action Movie that you are a major part of. There are choices you can make in the game that change what happens in the scenes. I hear there are more than one ending in the game, but the ending I got looked real enough to be the best. I'll probably play through more to see if I can get the worst ending.

Now if you use the Voice Recognition System it is a little bit buggy. I found it best to use a headset with mic to prevent background noise from messing it up. Being able to say things in combat like Fire, Cover Me, Fall Back, Need Assitance, Blitz, Charge, Yes, No, Affirmative was truly amazing. During combat if you fall you go into a last stand with your pistol and a teammate will ask if you need assistance and if you say yes they will try to make it to you but it's not their main priority; I only say yes if I don't have a medkit on me. Also you can talk to any team mate by saying their name while the voice com is on. Like even if they aren't on your current team and it's funny cause they will always tell you to focus on your current objective. The background noise of my surround sound system was being picked up by my microphone and catching words of the dialogue and the characters thought I was saying things I wasn't even saying which made me think of the headset idea which was a better way in playing the game.

I liked using my Xbox360 controller but to each their own. It doesn't tell you the buttons of the xbox controller but it will give you the keyboard commands for the action moments. I just memorized what each button was on the keyboard and in my head I would press it on the Xbox360 controller. It was more fun for me to play it on that.

The loyalty system reminds me of Mass Effect but way better. You have the between combat down time to create dialogue to improve their characters loyalty. In combat is the main bonus of this though. In combat if you shoot your teammate they lose loyalty, but you can also praise them for covering you, tell them they did a good job at the last thing they did and you will build a relationship with these NPCs like they were actual team mates. The loyalty system also improves the team mates that are currently on your team in combat when you take out more than one enemy using a grenade, bosonic blast, rocket, or using an environmental explosion. Your active team mates loyalty also improves if you melee kill or one shot kill the enemy during combat situations too. The loyalty system determines if they obey you in combat or try to do their own thing. I had one person hate me at first because I kept shooting them when they got in the way, but instead using the Voice Recognition System with a headset every time they got in the way I would tell them to Fall Back and Cover Me and praise them for doing a Good Job or Nice Work and now they are one of my most trusted team mates.

The storyline draws you in and keeps you there. There are twists and turns, there are unique situations that are amazing. One team mate is full of surprises, you will see what I mean when you play, but they are my favorite so far.

The enemies are different. They are robots that each have a weakness. Some are color coded to show you the way they will attack. Each boss has a unique way of dying and you listen to your team mates or try to analyze the weakness of each from fighting the boss. After fighting a few bosses you will be able to figure out what some of the other bosses weak points are. Each boss has a unique feel to it, but they are all well made.

It's not always combat, combat, combat. It has some scenes you play your character through that made it feel like an old James Bond movie just set in the future, which is funny because one part in the game they mention James Bond and the character being called it doesn't know who James Bond is, but another character does.

There is character progression. Each character has a unique weapon that is a part of their character class even the main character. That weapon can be upgraded at kiosks around the game. Each character also can be outfitted with nanobots that can improve the character from healing, health total, defense, reload time, grenade number, health kit number.

Other weapons. In the game almost all enemies except bosses drop weapons you can pickup and use. These weapons can range from shotguns, to smgs, to assault rifles, to sniper rifles, to chain guns. You can also find guns laying around. You carry your pistol, your main gun, a grenade type there are several, and a second gun that you can find. Chain Guns and the Stinger Missle are Heavy guns and don't require you to drop a secondary weapon and are fun to use. You can use some Gun Mounts you find throughout the game. The grenade types you can use are Frag, Remote Detonation, Spiked/Sticky grenades, EMP, and Holographic Decoys are what I have found so far.

I beat the main story in less than 11 hours. I haven't tried multiplayer either or even know if the multiplayer works. I do recommend this game to anyone that likes those types of games and movies. It has it's own unique feel and I believe everyone should try it at least once.

Kind of a hidden gem that got swept under the carpet by more higher profile games of the time but still well worth playing today.

Pros -
- Very solid and decent third person cover shooting.
- Hundreds of evil robots to kill which shatter in to itty bitty pieces.
- Your side kick looks like uncle Phil from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air!
- A cheesy B-movie script which is surprisingly well acted.
- It's a Japanese game so during cutscenes the camera will zoom in on the female character's boobies for no reason (That's a plus right?)
- Will run at a silky smooth 60fps on your old toaster of a PC.
- Likeable characters who ♥♥♥♥ talk eachother at every available opportunity.

Cons -
-Really weird keyboard controls and if you use a controller the on-screen prompts still tell you to press keyboard keys which i find to be pretty distracting.
- The multiplayer is deader than disco but it probably wasn't all that great anyway.

First of all:

Game Release year
Binary Domain 2012
ESRB (no one cares lol) +17
Genre TPS (Third-Person Shooter), Sci-Fi, Tactical, Action

A little bit of the story

The history of Binary Domain puts players in the not too distant future where robots have become so habitual for humans as it can be a toaster or a toilet element. They are a tool, and as such they fulfill their role in modern society. The problem comes when and this is the starting point of the game- completely haphazard way, the government of the United States finds that for more than half a century there are integrated into human society, completely unaware of their condition robots. This represents a serious breach of the convention in which the great powers agreed precisely never lead artificial intelligence so far, so an alliance of countries decides to send a Chinese built by American special forces command, French, British and, to infiltrate in Japan and bring the responsible to justice. Dan Marshall, our charismatic protagonist, is one of two Americans chosen for the mission ... which of course goes wrong in every possible way.

Gameplay

The game is quite interesting in their subject , but does not offer much gameplay is refreshing and satisfying.
At first slow and it becomes a bit boring but if you have enough patience you discover their virtues.
You can afford to destroy androids big and spectacular graphics while watching bits are made.
The dialogues are simple so you will not get bored listening long conversations also influences the attitude of your fellow players and help you or not depending on whether they " likes you " .
Something remarkable is that it has a voice recognition system if you have a microphone. Although not a very advanced system and it only works with certain words that are already predefined .
The variety of scenarios is very large and quite addictive and interesting plot and some touches of humor.

Pros

  • Action at all times, a story that takes different colors at all times, How to differentiate a human from a machine ?, that's one of the many questions that will come up in the game.

  • The gameplay is something innovative, actually just before seen in this class of games, using voice commands to manage your squad, it is really like and that gets you even more in the game.

  • The graphics are very good, excellent optimization, destroy robots is something pleasant in this game, as seen, the sound, are components that really make all that much more enjoyable.

  • Sound as I said before is absolutely excellent, maybe the sound when shooting is not 100% real, so to speak, however it is still excellent.

  • A story that never disappoints. It is certainly a story that will leave you wanting more and 10 hours of campaign surely make you short, if...this would have to go in bad, but few stories are those that leave you with this feeling.

  • There is a French Robot.

Cons

  • The voices , if they contradict myself with sound , however the voices , especially the squad , are one of the biggest mistake , at least as I see it .

  • The controls is one of the things that I had more problems, is really uncomfortable, but once you get used to your controls can play a more smooth and comfortable way.

    9.5/10 Very recommended.

The game starts by asking you to press the "?" key... Yeah, but this doesn't mean the question mark key, apparently it means "any key" - but the question mark is not an any key! So it's "almost any key" then... Let's try space... OK, that works.

So the game starts, and you're shown your controls. Hm, the pictures of the 1, 2, 3, 4 keys are laid out in a square, like the controller's d-pad. Besides, the game is unplayable with a gaming mouse, and there are no sensitivity settings or anything (there are no settings in general, so this is just one drop in a huge ocean of disappointment).

OK, but that's why we have an Xbox controller! A bad port won't scare us, right? NOPE. You connect the controller, start the game again, and the tool tips are still showing pictures of keyboard keys! So now not only are you trying to play a shooter with a controller (ugh), you're also guessing which button they mean when they show you some letter!

Now, you're thinking, sure, apparently there are some issues with the controls, but you can get used to anything as long as the story is good! This is some cross between The Matrix and Mass Effect or something! Again, NOPE. Story is flat, dialogue is clichéd, team mates are annoying.

But maybe it's a good shooter! Triple-NOPE. It's a cover-based, health-regenerating heap of boredom. The enemy AI is stupid, your team mate's AI is stupid, and the contrast with the game's backstory of human-like, super-intelligent AI, is almost funny.

The only redeeming quality of this game is the voice recognition mechanics. Haha, just kidding, it mostly doesn't work - but even if it did, it's totally gimmicky.

Now, the graphics is actually good - or at least on a standard level for a shooter. But this is basically the only thing that is normal in this game.

I don't usually write reviews, especially bad reviews ("if you can't say anything good, better say nothing"), but you, dear reader, deserve to be warned.

On the surface it's what looks to be like a cheap Gears of War clone.
After my playthrough I felt that this game held a story that was interesting and my influence on the growth of the characters and the impact on the story was undeniably cool.
Mechanically the game does function like a standard 3rd person shooter, but your aim is what sets it apart from others.
Attacking enemy robots in particular ways can yield better results and bigger combos.
Robot design is another positive aspect, each large robot had meticulous detail and they look amazing.

The game does mention co-op, but it is only for a horde mode like multiplayer.
A shame, game could have only benefited from co-op story. Still a solid game no matter.
An underrated sleeper hit. It's nice when SEGA takes risks like this.

Remember Snatcher? The awesome cyberpunk Visual Novel that was pretty much Hideo Kojima's Blade Runner?

If Snatcher and Metal Gear had a baby, and that baby was raised by a family of wild Japanese third person shooters, you wouldn't get Mowgli, you'd get Binary Domain.

Yes, the graphics are a little bland, the character archetypes are a little cliche and the soundtrack, while engaging, is pretty generic, but it's an interesting and shockingly non-linear interactive movie masquerading as a shooter. Too bad it's not likely to get the sequel it deserves.

This is one of the most underrated games of 2012. While the voice commands don't really work that well, you can turn them off. The story and gameplay are both great. Blowing robots apart was really fun. Watching a robot crawl towards you after you blew off it's legs was entertaining. I was expecting the ending to be basically Blade Runner since the plot was pretty similar, and while there are quite a few similarities I was still surprised. You can also slightly change the ending based on how much your teammates like you.

If you're looking for a cyberpunk shooter, this is your game.
