Everquest 2 remains a staple of MMO's in which it is a market dominated by new and better hype. In my opinion Everquest 2 is the underdog and a sleeper hit never at the forefront but also never to be underestimated. If WoW is not your type of MMO then I would reccomend Everquest 2 if only for completely different vibe then what is on the market today.

I do enjoy this game, let's make that clear. Just because I put negatives just means I'm being honest, as no game has zero negatives. So here goes...

The gameplay is pretty much the same as wow or swtor, while the story is all text. It's click the response bubbles to progress, unlike the old style Hail them and try to guess what to say or look it up online. Nothing wrong with that, as it's a huge leap forward from the first eq. In fact, everything that felt inadequate or annoying from the first game has been fixed while still keeping the same overall feel. You can actually get a feel for what will destroy you vs what will be a good difficulty for your gear, at least after a little trial and error as you change between different expansions.

As far as the f2p experience goes, it starts to noticeably suck after about lvl 80. the forced 50% exp to AA (skill point system) seems fine at first, but then you finish all the areas with quests that aren't grey (too low for EXP), and still lack the lvls to start more. When I ask the ppl for advice, they say get a mercenary ($24 unlock) or subscribe ($10-$14 / month) which completely contradicts the point of a f2p game. Also the lvl cap is 92 as f2p vs the 95 for subscribers. All of the overpowered gear for 92 is also in ToV, which you have to buy. Buying expansions isn't exactly bad for a f2p, but when it hinders you so badly that you feel forced to pay, it is a bad thing.

The only thing that makes this lvling system work is the incredibly useful mentor system. Long description short, you can lower your effective lvl for as long as you like, either to your groupmate's or a lvl you specify at a chronomage. This means you can go to an area you might have skipped, or to a dungeon you couldn't solo with the gear you have now and wail on the enemies there while still getting exp.

I've played a lot of f2p games, and I even quit playing this one for a while. The trouble was that at about lvl 30 (or earlier depending where you go), the quest help just stops. It doesn't show you where to go anymore. So, then you have to download a mod, EQ2maps just to find quest locations, but even that fails sometimes. After playing all of the other promising games out there, I came back because it's still the best one. The community is by far more friendly and english oriented than other games, the story more in depth, the features more unique. The only thing that really disappoints me is the character classes. basically, the ones on the left are the good aligned version of the ones in that row, except for channeler and beastlord, which you can't play as f2p. There are minor differences between them, such as illusionist having wizard spells + another you as a caster pet vs. the coercer being a wizard with a charmed pet that you have to constantly re-charm. The warlock is the evil version of the wizard, but it's a necromancer with no pet. So, don't listen when the game says it has X number of classes.

Like pretty much every other MMO, if you don't have a friend or 2 to start with, or if you aren't the type to join guilds or good at getting groups together, you won't have fun later on. Nobody uses the group finder because they just use a merc. If you are sociable and like to be in a helpful guild or have real life friends to play with, then you'll really dig it.

I just realized I have never reviewed my favorite MMO before. So why is it my favorite? Because it caters to every single play style you can think of (soloers, duoers, groupers, raiders, casuals, hardcores, etc...). It has so much content you will literally be blown away by just how much you can do in this game. It comes out with a nice sized expansion every single year along with weekly updates to the game.

You want story? EQ2 has VERY deep lore. I don't follow the story, but I know there are books upon books of the lore EQ2 currently has.

Want quests? There are currently nearly 9,000 quests in the game. And they ain't all as simple as "Go kill this and return" type of quests. A lot of quests can take hours if not days to complete, very epic stories. Many types of quests including Hallmark, Lore & Legend, Language, Crafting, Heritage, Epic, Access Quests, Missions, the list goes on and on.... Not a single player has ever completed every quest in the game. Far from it actually.

There is SO much to this game, I don't want this review to get long. Just check it out! Its free. Restrictions are far from bad, its one of the less restrictive f2p games on the market.

The least flawed of all the MMORPGs presently out. If you are a fan of the MMO genre, you absolutely must try this game. It sucks you in from the first click and doesn't let go. Graphics, sound, and gameplay are all here and representing the best there is to offer in the MMO pride.

went to 6 different regions, got killed by monsters in a region where i wasn't supposed to be, got lost, don't know where to go, and enjoy getting credit for discovering new places in the game and leveling up without doing any fighting, which makes it easier to kill freaking demons!!!

One of the most under-rated MMoRPG's as far as i'm concerned! the ONLY problem is there are now some population issues...

Contrary to my steam play time I have well over 1,000hrs invested in EQ2 with my 3 endgame characters. This was by far the most fun I've ever had in a generic style MMORPG.

I did play WoW for a while but the graphical style of WoW and the over simplified skill system kinda bored me to death.

Everquest utilizes an in depth skill system that requires you think before using points in a particular tree. Granted classes are not really open like in some of the new MMOS but the class itself has a lot of customization.

Example: A wizard has class restrictions forbidding the use of heavy armor and a variety of weapons. But it allows a rounded out skill selection including element proficiency and damage/debuff modifiers.

All in all I strongly recommend this game for any and all MMO players. F2Players are not restricted like in many other F2Play games. Level cap is 85 and the auctionhouse requires F2Play auction tickets to use otherwise buying the All access pass makes most everything free besides Expansion stuff.

I play this game a lot. More than most people I know. I definitely recommend it for any type of play style you like. I've met and grouped with all kinds of people from all around the world, from nurses to graphic artists. Even a guy who was like 95 years old! Anyone can learn the game and become good at it!

Played this for several years before it went F2P. I've yet to find an MMO that I've enjoyed more. Only problem coming back is that now my level 90 character is virtually unusable since his tier gear is locked for Premium players. While that has personally driven me to try other MMO's, EQ2 remains a fantastic MMO with a rich world and, at least when I played it, solid mechanics. I highly reccomend it.

One of the best if not the best free rpgs out there.Definitely in the league with WoW! It has one bad side tho(a little one):It might seem a little weird and slobby at the start and you might not be able to understand the basics at the very first time but when you come to think of it,its not complex at all...Its just kind of different.I surely suggest this game to any rpg fan out there!Hope it helps!

From what I've played (not a lot atall) This is a nifty and content packed MMORPG, but I prefer WoW, that's just my biased non-experienced opinion.

Very strong alternative to WoW. F2P adds a great advantage. Might have to kiss my level 90 monk goodbye.
