Reviews

“All in all, Cave Story is an incredible game that I'm sure I will be playing again and again for the rest of my life. It succeeds at telling a great story, providing fantastic run-and-gun gameplay, and a huge world to explore, and it does so with a style and technique all its own.”
95/100 – http://www.destructoid.com/review-cave-story-wiiware--169033.phtml
“It's a must-play masterpiece for anyone who like classic action games -- or any kind of action game, really. The only real question is which will amaze you more: That this is the work of a single man, or that they actually do make 'em like this anymore.”
100/100 – http://www.1up.com/reviews/cave-story-wii-review
“If this game had been released on the NES 20 years ago, it would be recalled by a generation of players as a high point of the 8-bit era.”
90/100 – Eurogamer

About This Game

Arguably the most well-known indie game of all time, Cave Story features a completely original storyline wrapped with personality, mystery and hours of fast-paced fun. Cave Story is an action-adventure game from the critically acclaimed independent designer, Daisuke Amaya--or Pixel to his fans. Overflowing with unmatched charm and character, Cave Story takes you into a rare world where a curious race of innocent rabbit-like creatures, called Mimigas, run free.
You wake up in a dark cave with no memory of who you are, where you came from or why you're in such a place. Uncovering Mimiga Village you discover that the once-carefree Mimigas are in danger at the hands of a maniacal scientist. The Mimigas’ only hope rest squarely on the shoulders of a quiet, amnesiac boy who can't remember his own name.
Run, jump, shoot, fly and explore your way through a massive action-adventure reminiscent of classic 8- and 16-bit games. Take control and learn the origins of this world’s power, stop the delusional villain and save the Mimiga!

The quintessential 2D platformer made with indie blood and sweat. A fun and challenging experience not to be missed!

This game is good up to some point. Then it gets annoying very abruptly. I mean you enjoy it about 6 hours and then KABLAM! hardcore mode on, annoying quests on. I can't really say I enjoyed it because the ending should be game defining.

+ good mechanics
+ variety of moves to learn

- sometimes too hard (on eaz...)
- hardcore in a bad way (not via interesting game mechanics but via 'too little space to move')
- annoying dialogues which you can't skip (only ff)

So many tired indie concepts. This guy really needs to come up with something new.

The game itself is a pretty good platformer. There's a minor shooting and bullet dodging aspect like any other platformer. The environments are pretty interesting and the tiles are done seamlessly where they are detailed, but not too detailed that you are distracted (like getting hit by a bullet because it gets lost in the background). Movement is also pretty smooth and fast paced so that you never feel dragged down. I didn't feel any padding for length that happens in some simplistic games similar to this one (you know where enemies keep spawning, repeating rooms, etc.) One criticism about the gameplay itself is that I felt the difficulty jumps a little bit between bosses and levels, but I won't say much about that to not spoil that certain boss. It's a fun game with good mechanics. But does that justify it? Now... for the main criticism I have about this game.

Boring plot. I couldn't keep engaged because I was like, "not this ♥♥♥♥ again." Straight up copy of Undertale. Completely unacceptable. These indie developers need to stop copying each other and actually try making an honest and original game. This Chinese developer literally stole everything (when will the Chinese stop?). Underground. Protagonist with unknown history. Evil flower. Squat jokester with a weird eye that turns out to be the "antagonist." Innocent long-eared animals that turn rabid/evil. Funny robots. Quirky characters and relationships. Do I need to list more? Please. When will the Chinese actually be original and stop flooding the indie market with copy-paste games? Pass on this game. It's just like Avatar or Transformers. A fun blockbuster for boring summer days, but are they worth your money? I think not. Play Undertale. I guess the only benefit of the Chinese copying us is that they will always be militaristically behind so we can finally end this in WWIII.

For Takeshima Island!

Straight up a masterclass in an individual’s performance to make such a ground-breaking game in the sense of incorporating such a heavy use of pixel art in a game that has no doubt been an inspiration for many an indie game in recent days.

Bear in mind that the man who created this had to do it all by himself in every department such as programming the frustrating AI enemies, composing each of the great pieces of music and even doing the design and implementation of his graphical art style.

When you look at it in a sense, Cave Story is a game that deserves more praise than it gets. Far more praise than a game such as Undertale received as it was indeed made by one man as well but the gap in technology to do so between a game made in 2004 and the latter 2015 is truly an achievement.

This is a great little platformer. It looks good, it sounds good, it handles well, and it's about as compelling as it needs to be, story-wise. As with many of the platformers of the era it's emulating, I eventually lost interest when I got stuck about where to go next, but I got hours of gameplay out of it, and it was a lot of fun.

this game is better than most likely all of yer steam games. the story, the characters, all of the little hidden secrets
the bubbline behind kings fire, if you rest at chakos house youll get an achievement, if you keep the polar star it becomes OP. the game is over all amazing and the levels and bosses well layed out.

This is undoubtedly the most underrated game ever made, a game that stands side by side with games normaly had as some of the best in the world, standing as the best 2D vshooter ever (and know that I've played every Metroid and main Megaman game) and Pixel's (name of creator) magnum opus, that said his other games are also masterpieces.

And don´t distrust my opinion because of the short number of played hours, because I bought this version recently so I could enjoy the game in 32 bits.

So, in other words you don´t have the right to call yourself a gamer unless you play this game.

One of the greatest metroidvania games out there. Totally worth every penny for the Steam version.

-Runs at 60FPS compared to the 50FPS original.
-Can switch between the original graphics and new HD graphics.
-Can switch between 3 soundtracks.
-One of the best soundtracks I've ever heard in any video game.
-Way better controller support.
-Multiple difficulties.
-Only version that has achievements.
-Extra modes such as Machine Gun Challenge and Wind Fortress.
-Multiple endings.
-Great characters.

I can go on and on about how this is such a well put together game, but you're better off just playing it and experiencing it yourself.
