Bastion Review:

[ Fast Review: ] [ Overall Rating: 9.16 ]

Finally beat this game doing the core story. Was a great experience which gave you a breath taking world, an excellent array of tools at your disposal, and an excellent harmony of story telling and game action at the same time. Well done 'Supergiant Games!' I bought this game on sale, but trust me, it's worth it even when it is full price. A must have for anyone who likes a game with great expression!

[ Pros: ]

  • GREAT story telling. In my opinion this is why Bastion stood out to me the most was due to the expression and easy listening of a story while playing. The narrator was flawlessly executed into the game while playing.
  • Kept my interest peaked at all points of the game. Stages had great length, story was kept short by clean and the combat was excellent.
  • Along with combat is was a fun experience , swinging while shooting and blocking was never a hard task to complete unlike some games where managing the combat can be rather challenging.
  • Awesome weapon selection, including a perk in the game allowing you to adjust the difficulty by adding enemy buffs which in turn rewards you, great system.

    [ Cons: ]

  • Honestly, it's a very short game. I was taking my time with the main story and side missions which took about 8-10 hours. [ Short doesn't always mean bad though. ] It't just to bad it wasn't longer.

    [ Sound: 9 ]

I'm including the narrator into this; it makes for an excellent part of the game. The music was great, never felt like it was repeating or I didn't want to hear the narrator.

    [ Style/Originality: 10 ]

If your looking for a game that's in a style of its own, this would be a great start. A new, expressive experience with breath taking art and knows exactly what it wanted to be, and achieved this significantly.

    [ Art/Graphics: 10 ]

To some people, they may disagree with my rating on graphics; but im going mostly towards the art side of things for this game. The art was phenomenal.

    [ Enjoyment: 9 ]

The only reason I'm giving this a 9 is due to the learning curve of the game at the beginning, just a tad hard to get used to, but once you do, it makes you feel like your playing the game to the best of your ability.

    [ Story: 8 ]

The story wasn't hugely indepth, there are side missions and or stages to learn more but it wasn't a key factor of the game. But in all honesty, it didn't need to be; this didn't hinder the game one bit. But if you are looking for a game with a great story, this game isn't focused on it compared to its other features.

    [ Gameplay: 9 ]

Felt really great controlling your character, moving around, and fighting all at the same time. The battles made you feel like you accomplished a challenge like parrying correctly or dodging at the right moment. The enemies had great response, no problem there. One thing to note is that there are no "bosses" per say in this game, more like challenges or heavy tasks to overcome.

    [ Overall Rating: 9.16 ]

In case you missed it, the short review is at the top of the page along with the rating posted again.

Personal Opinion: 9.7/10

Worth The Money. I'd recommend.

Narrator's voice
Doesn't have a second game

This game has an amazing storyline, lots of unexpected plot twists, (I know, that's the definition.)
Plenty of extras, the game doesn't seem too hard at first, but then there are lots of things that get thrown at you that gets you to learn the game and figure out good pairs of weapons (war machete and dual pistols did it for me) , and with a controller or mouse, it's fun. The soundtrack is amazing. I actually bought it. The songs are noticable, they're good, and they fit. They make you want to listen over and over again. Unlike alot of modern songs.

all and all. This game isn't another hole in the wall. It's definitely worth the money.

VERY short. Worth every minute. I marathoned this from start to finish and I still love it to tears. Great story, wonderful soundtrack, and genuinely fun. If it's ever on sale, definitely buy it. If it's not? Do it anyway.

I enjoyed this game very much. The art was beautiful. The music was beautiful. The story was beautiful. It is a beautiful game. The gameplay is hack and slash, which is fun, but starts to get dull when you figure out your favorite loadout and use it to solve every problem. The game often gives you a new weapon to use in the middle of the level without the ability to change back to the weapon you were just using. They seemed to figure out this was annoying halfway through the game and started putting arsenals (where you can change your weapon loadouts) not too far after acquiring a new weapon. This concept was especially frustrating when you had a special skill for a specific weapon, and then it switches that weapon, so you can no longer use any special skill (you're only allowed one skill at a time.), and do not have the ability to switch special skills! But, still, I enjoyed all 6.8 hours it took me to finish this game. (I didn't go for 100%, so there's even more stuff you can do, and there is a new game + mode I don't care about, so you could play this game for many more hours if you wanted to.)

when i first played this game, i could count my age on my fingers, and i remember my dad telling me when i asked to get this "i dont think you will like this game very much". he was wrong in every meaning of the word. i played this game to a pulp, and even now, many years later, the game still stands as one of my favorite games of all time. a soundtrack mozart would shed a tear to, a story shakespeare couldnt write. more options and potential than a box of lego's, and artwork that da vinci would envy. all in all, i reccomend this game to anyone with the time, and honestly, i'd say youd be missing out if you decided to overlook this absolute masterpiece.

The Kid's Hardships

Must Play Game

Bastion is a stunning action RPG that does most everything right. Bastion has a beautiful art style and a large range of colors which helps contribute to the strangeness of the world. The story is neat, and Supergiant leaves a lot up to your imagination, but the idea is an event called "The Calamity" has wiped out most of the worlds population, the Kid, who you play as, is the only Human survivor, and you need to restore the Bastion to repair the world to it's prior state. I didn't spoil anything, I promise. The game has an amazing sound track, which Is worth the price alone. And the story is told through a wonderful narration. The gameplay is very fast and fun, some weapons are better than others, but there is something for everyones playstyle. You can sit back with a bow and take out your foes in one charged shoot, or use a repater to slowly whittle down the enemies health. Bastion also has great replay value with a new game plus mode, where you keep all your upgrades from your first playthough, and Score Attack mode where you try to combo foes to get the highest score possible.

I have gotten 24 hours out of Bastion, 100% acheivments, and beaten the game many times and have no doubt I will end up playing Bastion again in the future.

A nice narrative-driven action RPG with very beautiful and colourful visuals. Bastion has you visit different stages in a quest for collectible items to help you restore the hub area (called The Bastion), which is a small flying fortress.

The gameplay is similar to most other isometric action RPGs with hack and slash elements. There is a variety of enemies, weapons, and special skills. The game offers a nice hub area management, so you get to see it improving with each mission you. You raise important buildings, such as the forge, distillery, etc, which allow you to upgrade your weapons, buy stuff, accomplish memorial challenges, and even activate shrines of peculiar deities that make enemies stronger in exchange for earning you more of the game's currency with each kill.

In addition to regular missions, there are also proving grounds associated with each weapon you find. These proving grounds provide you with unique challenges, and depending on how well you do, you get a prize. Each weapon's challenge is different. For example, the hammer's challenge requires you to smash 100 objects as fast as possible, whereas bow's challenges requires you to destroy all targets in as few shots as possible, and so on.

I liked the variety of weapons the game had. It diversified the gameplay and allowed you to choose your preferred playstyle since each weapon acts differently and is useful in different situations (I personally enjoyed destroying things with a Galleon Mortar).

For an action hack and slash game, it has a fairly good story. Don't expect something super tense and immersive, but you can be sure that you won't just be going from area to area with no goal. The narrator who speaks whilst you're out adventuring is also fun to listen to (and in my opinion way better than in Supergiant Games' other title Transistor).

Overall it's been a fun game to get through. The presence of a couple of story choices in the final mission seemed a bit strange, since the rest of the game didn't have those, so this addition seemed a bit off, and some parts of the game could feel a tad repetitive, but otherwise there's nothing much to complain about.

If you are a PC Gamer and have somehow managed to go this long without playing Bastion, I want you to stop reading this review, and buy this game. I'm serious. Do it now.

Now that you have done that, let me explain why.

Bastion is nothing short of a masterpiece. Visually stunning, deeply engaging narrative, bowstring tight controls, and one of the most poignant soundtracks I have ever heard in a game. I have literally nothing to criticize and nothing but the highest praise to offer.

As a game designer, this is the kind of game I one day dream of making, It's just that good.

So, get it. You won't regret it.

The game is still stunning in both its art direction and writing. Gameplay is fun and varied, and there are many different experiences to be had throughout. It’s also nice to once again see the game that laid the foundation for Transistor‘s presentation and mechanics.

Buying this game was a big mistake, now play it i can never play it for the first time again.
Now for real:

-Amazing, gripping and sometimes sad story.
-The music is so good, its up there with shadow of the collossus!
-Gameplay is fun, maybe a little to easy, but you can use shrines to make it harder.

-Game is a little short, after completing new game plus, i played about 10 hours

This game is a gem, i felt empty after completing it.
