Hello captains! We have a new playtest build with some big updates on the hook for ya.



New features
  • Save games! Not the most exciting feature but something that has taken a lot of effort to get in. You can now open the pause menu when not in the tutorial or combat to save the game. The game is also saved when entering and leaving a harbour.
  • A new Rift has been spotted out at sea! This one is still in development but we would like your feedback on what we have made so far. We are quite excited to hear what you think.
  • New starting ship: The glass cannon Tarpon
  • Rumours now have their own page in the journal
  • Streamlined creating your captain
  • More things to take with you in the life boat when starting a new run
  • You can now name your ship when starting a new run
  • More narrative content
  • More sound effects
  • More crew traits
  • More Auxiliary Equipment with a wider range of effects
  • Traits and Auxiliary Equipment now impact challenge difficulty
  • Crew responding to one of their crew mates dying or being marooned

Bug fixes
  • Captain no longer leaves because of low mood. Thanks for reporting it @Rasmus and @copakindred!

Known issues
  • Crew for hire gets shuffled if exiting the Inn, even though you have bought them drinks
  • Occasionally monsters fly in the tutorial
  • Log entries do not not get saved

Unknown issues?
  • Probably a lot of fun bugs with save games we haven’t found yet. Do jump on our Discord and tell us if you find any :D

About Love, Hate and the other ones - deathbuffer
The version of SDL2 we shipped with on Windows had DPI scaling bug, causing the wrong resolution to be selected whenever the game was launched. This update brings SDL2 to the latest version 2.30.11 that should fix the issue.

During voting, scores are distributed according to the flow: Yes, No, and Neutral votes.
When the liar is correctly identified:

When the liar is not identified:

Hey everyone.

Experimental build available via:

I'm working on a large number of overhauls and new things. Firstly the story, I've properly built out an Interactve intro that I'm sure a number of people will enjoy. Secondly I have been working on getting UI art for the game's various menus and buttons, as well as improving the general presentation of everything. (I also need to get a proper tutorial setup, that's next)

I started VA as a test to figure out port-based ship building, and to sell something to keep the lights on. Once I got everything workable, I set out to make some fun fights. Now VA is an okay game but is sorely underdeveloped in a wide variety of areas outside ship building. Fundamental things like a tutorial, good gameplay flow when making a ship and fleet for a fight, quality-of-life when making your ships and actually good AI brains when fighting stuff. Aswell as the UI visuals, presentation.

There are also rather plain issues with the way weapons are balanced, the clear lack of good AI ship behaviour, and a rather well requested feature - being able to either control a ship or command them in battle. Which I agree, would be a lot better than sitting there being annoyed at a ship for doing something dumb.

But one thing at a time. Getting the game to look good will help me have the motivation to get the game to feel good.

I have begun to get some art for UI and backgrounds, as well as build an interactive story system for telling the player a nice story along with the building and destruction.

First of all - and I know this isn't a priority for some people, but a good story goes a long way - a proper introduction. A chance to get a feel for the world, to care about it. But also non-critical for anyone that just wants to play the game.

Upon starting a new campaign, you are greeted by this intro.
