It’s been a busy few months but while we have a little bit of breathing room we wanted to jump into your Steam news feeds with a few updates on Sonokuni, both on development progress and some other news too.

Summer adventures

Over the Summer we took Sonokuni to Bitsummit, where it won two (!) awards: Excellence in Sound Design and VGC’s Media Highlight Award. Sonokuni was also playable on the show floor at Tokyo Games Show.

We wanted, first and foremost, to send out a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who came along to the Kakehashi Games booths at these events and played the game. It was awesome to get some direct feedback (and of course great to see heads bopping along to the beat!).

Laying down tracks

Back at Don Yasa Crew HQ, the development team x J-hip hop crew has been busy implementing a lot of new things in the game. Not least a bunch of new tracks for the later levels.

Getting around

Don Yasa Crew are keen to show a little more of the surrounding world of the game outside of the titular village of ‘Sonokuni’ and the neighbouring country of ‘Wanokuni’ (where the stages take place). With this in mind they have now added a characteristically psychedelic array of transition sequences. The aim here is to gently hint at the state of the world outside of these two main locations. We hope you find these sequences intriguing and a little surprising!





Translations inbound

One of the questions we are most asked is whether Sonokuni will be fully localised into XYZ language. We’re happy to give you a little peek behind the curtain at the localisation progress being made. The current ‘in development’ build is now playable in English, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Russian.





Launch window update

A key thing we wanted to tell you about as well is that, while development is coming along really well so far, we’ve made the decision to shift the expected launch window back into early 2025.

We were previously aiming to have Sonokuni in your hands by the end of this year, but after having so many people playing the game during the various events and the Steam Next Fest demo earlier in the year, we’ve received so much awesome feedback it would be a shame not to include in the final game due to time constraints.

We’re sorry to have to push the release back like this, though we’re confident that this is the right thing to do to ensure we have all the time needed to create the best, most well-balanced, and polished version of Sonokuni possible.

Hello everyone! As of October 13th, it's been 1 year since we released our game. Thank you so much for all your support! Over the next several weeks, we'll be releasing some content changes, quality of life improvements, and bug fixes.

Here are the patch notes for October 20th:
  • Slightly lowered force of gravity so player has gentler fall
  • Replaced all Tutorial UI with updated control icons
  • Subtle pulse/shake animations were added to control icons to bring attention to tutorial instructions in game
  • Added extra tutorial section to L1 based on Expo feedback (latch and extension tutorials were separated)
  • Extended some platform trails
  • Slightly increased death screen shake, and improved death particles
  • Some platforms that loop between 2 locations will now briefly pause at their destination
  • Some platforms in L3 will wait for the player to board before beginning its loop, to prevent players from having to wait too long for the platform to return after re-spawning
  • Modified a platform in the first puzzle of L1 to prevent head-hitting
  • Altered placement of pressure plates & surrounding tiles across all levels to reduce situations where players would be "pushed out of bounds" by releasing the box (testing a variety of potential code fixes to permanently fix problem, will push later on)
  • Added a "controller recommended" screen to splash sequence. Slightly shortened timing of overall splash sequence
  • Fixed strange sliding behavior on the player
  • Disable reset && un-tether buttons when game is paused
  • Updated credits

Thunder Bats are common bats that hide in caves in Erikuria and lead a predominantly nocturnal lifestyle. Their white blood can absorb magic, heal wounds and cure diseases. This is all that was written in the diary of the demon Rakshasa, who first discovered the bats in the caves of Erikuria during one of the horned ones' forays into the lands of people.

The demon took several individuals with him and studied their blood for a long time, subjecting it to magical effects. He tested all the properties of white blood on human test subjects and himself.

One day, he tried to expose white blood to necrotic magic and ice magic at once. He gave the resulting blood to a person to drink, and the person turned into a monster that almost killed the demon. Rakshasa realized that his research was dangerous, so he tore out all the pages describing his experiments from the diary and burned them. Only a brief description of the bats themselves remained.

A few years later, the demon died, and his diary fell into the hands of human soldiers who had infiltrated the demons' territory. They understood nothing of it, so when they returned to Erikuria, they gave it to the library. A hundred years later, Amanda Nix found the diary and learned about the unusual bats. Who knows, maybe if the demon had not torn out the pages from the diary, the white blood crisis could have been avoided.

    Select Heavenly Chaos when starting a new game to enter this new gameplay. Once any Heavenly Dao is activated, the game will trigger a Heavenly Chaos event at a predetermined time based on its rules, completely altering the gameplay.


Chaos Explanation:
  • Constant Chaos (Over 40 types):
    Choose one of three powerful chaos mutations to be permanently effective in this game session.
    Constant Chaos mutations are powerful forces that will change gameplay, so choose wisely.


  • Turbulent Chaos (Over 100 types each for Cause and Effect):
    Select one from each of the four groups of cause and effect to form a complete chaos event, which will trigger once conditions are met.
    The mysteries of Turbulent Chaos are for everyone to discover.


  • Yin Yang Chaos (Over 100 types each for Yin and Yang):
    Select one from each of the four groups of Yin Yang effects to form a complete chaos event, which will take effect within a certain duration.
    Every bit helps, the more the better!

Heavenly Creed Explanation:
  • Taishi: Gain three consecutive Constant Heavenly Chaos events at the start of a new game.
  • Taizhong: Trigger one Turbulent/Yin Yang/Constant Heavenly Chaos event every 10/50/100 days.
  • Taizhen: Trigger one Yin Yang Heavenly Chaos event for every level increase in Sect Reputation; trigger Constant Heavenly Chaos every six times.
  • Taixu: Each time a Sect disciple achieves a breakthrough, there is a chance to trigger a Heavenly Chaos event.
  • Taixuan: Cannot manually select the effects of Turbulent Heavenly Chaos and Yin Yang Heavenly Chaos.
  • Taiyi: After the effects of Turbulent Heavenly Chaos take effect, there is a probability to reset one effect.
