have you played project winter

I really like Project Winter, at least in theory. It’s a classic hidden role multiplayer affair, where you’re ostensibly Doing A Survival: there’s a bunch of you stuck somewhere arctic, trying not to freeze or starve in a log cabin while also accomplishing tasks like repairing radio transmitters, with the eventual aim of summoning an escape helicopter.

But as Matt put it in a recent post, “really it’s about luring your friends into the wilderness so you can murder them“. Because of course, not all of your group of survivors are goodies. One or two of you, depending on how many are playing, will be secretly designated as gits, and will spend the whole game trying to ruin everyone elses’ chances of rescue.

“So how are you doing, Matt?” asks Brendy (RPS in peace). We’re foraging together, well out of earshot from the other survivors. “I mean outside the game”, he says. “How’s your shoulder? Is your collarbone healing OK?”. It’s been a while since we chatted, and I genuinely appreciate his concern. It’s a nice moment. I tell him I’m doing just fine, while simultaneously raising my sickle.

“Feels a bit weird to do this now, though” I said, as I brought it down on him.

Project Winter is a survival game about escaping a frozen wilderness, except really it’s about luring your friends into the wilderness so you can murder them. We played it nonstop for most of last weekend, and I have rarely laughed so hard at a videogame.

It’s absolutely roasting out right now, but it might’s well be December for all my ability to go outside and enjoy it. No, let’s hunker inside, shutter the blinds, and chill out with some cold-blooded murder with Project Winter. Other Ocean’s glacial backstab ’em up is currently free ’til the end of the weekend, and offering cold-blooded betrayal for keeps at a brutally slashed price.

I m currently very happy that we ve escaped the clutches of winter (at least in the northern hemisphere), and I m generally untrusting of my friends who claim to like the colder months. They would, I m sure, be very good at the sneaky backstabbing in the blizzards of Project Winter, which launched this week. Here s the launch trailer, showing off the subtle approaches you might like to take to murder your fellow campers, like bear or landmine.

In this winter of our discontent, one question burns brighter than any other. Has Harry poisoned the tea?

That’s the kind of question I hope to be asking in Project Winter, an upcoming multiplayer social survival game where some players play traitors to a gang of stranded survivors. It’s billed to enter early access in early 2019, and has already set my mind a-scheming.
