Wonky war game Totally Accurate Battle Simulator has been plunking around in various states of pre-release for years now. After an open alpha, closed alpha, and early access launch, TABS will finally get what Landfall are calling version 1.0 at the end of 2020. There’s plenty of the usual silliness planned before then too, though.

Times are strange and frightening. But one point of great solace for me has been hearing people celebrating things in their lives. It feels especially important right now to hold on to what makes us all proud about what we do and who we are. And what I really love is people showing off things they’re proud of making.

So I’ve been asking a bunch of developers to pick out something they’ve created that brings them pleasure to look back on. And here they are, including Harvey Smith remembering his input on Deus Ex and Dishonored, Derek Yu on one of his first-ever games. There’s pride in doing something for someone else’s game, in the power of details and in little inventions, and ah gosh, shut up, let’s just tuck into a big slice of escapist positivity. (more…)

An obscenely rich teenager throws his VR controller across the room in a fit of blind panic while playing Half-Life: Alyx. It leaves the window of his bedroom at 5m/s. It falls 10m vertically and hits his neighbour s greenhouse, smashing the glass. How many metres did the controller travel horizontally before coming to a stop in the tomatoes? Use a kinematic formula to determine your answer and show your wor–

UGH, physics. Here are 10 games where physics is not boring, but good.

When I was seven years old, my dad broke our Atari ST. We had been playing about with some primitive CAD software, plotting out simple shapes to render low polygon urns when he fell eerily silent. His face slackened, transfixed. His eyes became locked to the screen. Clicking over and over, the man began adding vertices anywhere they would fit, hundreds of them, tracing the outline of some impossible, non-Euclidean solid. With each fresh click the Atari took longer to respond, until at last the monitor was a nonsense web of overlapping edges and clipped geometry. Dad, I pleaded, the maddening nest of garbled lines reflected in his glasses. Dad, don t.

A lot of fun stuff happens when you try to do stuff with physics, says Wilhelm Nylund, head of Landfall Games, and the intelligent god behind Totally Accurate Battle Simulator s legions of gangling warriors.

And yet physics has given him an enormous amount of grief over the course of TABS development – as well as all the other games he s made at Landfall. Physics, after all, makes everything harder. If you want to do something in the game, you need to figure out how to do it with physics instead of just doing it, he tells me. And that s why TABS, which is all about watching ridiculous parodies of extreme violence, is great. (more…)

They just keep coming don’t they? A lot of games were announced at E3 2019, things that we didn’t know about, as well as stuff that’s previously announced, or expansions to already released games. Now, to the casual outsider, what we’re doing might seem absolutely nuts, but we thought we’d put together an alphabetical list of all the PC games that have been confirmed to appear at this year’s E3 show. With well over a hundred of them now in the books, the next year or so looks packed.

Oh dear god, there’s a lot of games announced at E3 2019. A lot of new things that we didn’t know about as well, especially coming out of Microsoft’s conference. It might seem absolutely nuts, but we thought we’d put together an alphabetical list of games that have been confirmed to appear at this year’s E3 show. With well over a hundred of them now in the books, the next year or so looks packed.
