The best shooters endure. While other genres warp beyond recognition, there is something solid about the first-person shooter that makes it as dependable as a nice big AK-47. Maybe it s the gung-ho simplicity – look down a barrel and pull the trigger. It’s as fun to fire a double-barrelled shotgun from an early 90s FPS as the slick shotties of today. For that reason, this list runs the gamut from genre classics to those released in the last year. There’s bound to be something for you in this, our list of the best 50 FPS games on PC. Let s lock and/or load.

The best shooters endure. While the state of the art moves on in other genres and leaves old designs in the dust, it’s as fun to fire a well-made shotgun from an early 90s FPS as from one released today. For that reason, this list runs the gamut from genre classics to those released in the last year. There’s bound to be something for you inside.

Day of Defeat - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Tim Stone)

Having spent around eight months in Early Access and then three in a mysterious state called Phase 2 , Flight Sim World, Dovetail Games’ modernised-but-feature-trimmed-and-unfinished version of Microsoft Flight Simulator, is officially dead. On Monday, out of the blue, DTG announced that work on the project has come to an end. Apparently, there simply weren’t enough customers to justify continuing. As the team assembled by the British train sim tycoons seemed to possess sufficient passion, will and, initially at least, resources to make FSW a success, it’s hardly surprising that some in the flight sim community are blaming the failure of the endeavour on poor project management and the manner in which Dovetail dealt with Flight Simulator’s vital ecosystem of third-party add-on devs. (more…)

EXT. OMAHA BEACH, JUNE 6 1944

There s blood on the beach. Artillery shells launch explosive geysers of sand and salt water into the air. Soldiers storm the shoreline, throwing themselves at the enemy. A harried CAPTAIN runs through the chaos and throws himself into a blackened crater.>

CAPTAIN: Radio! RADIO! Where the hell is my god damned radio!?

An eager soldier appears at the crest of the crater. It s a RADIOMAN.>

RADIOMAN: Hello sir! How do you change loadouts?

CAPTAIN: Get down, private!

RADIOMAN: How do you go prone?

CAPTAIN: Get in here and give me that damn radio, trooper!

RADIOMAN: Okay but how do you–

A flurry of bullets tears the RADIOMAN and his radio to pieces, leaving the machine inoperable. The CAPTAIN grinds his teeth. It is a free weekend in Day of Infamy and the allies are losing badly.> (more…)

Infamy, infamy, they've all got it: infamy

More like days> of infamy. A whole weekend of infamy. A holiday >of infamy. The team-based world war II shooter Day of Infamy [official site] is seeking to dig some trenches in your Steam account with a free weekend from October 12-16 . Perhaps developers New World Interactive are aware that Call of Duty: WW2 will be parachuting into its territory come early November and are seeking to set up some resistance to this invader. Or perhaps they are just seeking to rescue the last lovers of realistic shooters from the beaches before the wacky warriors of CoD show up to capture them all. (more…)

Yeah yeah, Call of Duty is returning to World War 2 but Day of Infamy [official site] is already there. Now developers New World Interactive (you might know ’em for Insurgency) have invited more people to the war, launching a free update adding soldiers including Scotland’s Black Watch, the African-American Black Panthers tank battalion, and those rowdy Australians. Yesterday’s update also brought one new maps, a new gun, and some other odds and ends to the WW2 FPS. To cap it all off, Day of Infamy is on sale right now too. Here, look at this bloody ripper: … [visit site to read more]

Call of Duty®: Infinite Warfare - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Brendan Caldwell)

Those who do not learn from from history, are doomed to make another World War II videogame. A famous saying, and one we all know well. So when Activision hosted a live presentation for the reveal trailer of their latest shooter, Call of Duty: WWII [official site], I watched and felt nothing but a tired wave of low-burning resentment for everyone involved. During this presentation the word visceral was said a total of eight times and our own news editor Alice silently got up from her desk, walked solemnly out of her house, and never returned. If anyone has seen Alice, please call us. … [visit site to read more]

Infamy! Infamy! They ve all got it infamy! is one of the best jokes of all time. It is also what I screamed as I was repeatedly gunned down in World War II shooter Day of Infamy [official site] while playing the early access version.

Fans of murdering me from afar with a scoped rifle will rejoice that the game has just now busted out into a proper release, fully baked and ready to storm some beaches. You can see what kind of terrible conflict you can create in the trailer below. … [visit site to read more]

Day of Infamy [official site], their World War 2 spin-off from modern-day semi-serious FPS Insurgency, will leave early access and officially launch on March 23rd. That’s the word this week from developers New World Interactive. Our Brendan Prematurely Evaluated Day of Infamy in August 2016 and had a gay old time capturing points, shooting faces, relaying messages by radio, and, accidentally calling artillery barrages down upon his own team. Oh dear. … [visit site to read more]

Every Monday, Brendan heads to the frontlines of early access and writes about his heroic battles there. This week, he repeatedly fires upon his own team in multiplayer shooter Day of Infamy.>

In an age of Overwatches and hyper-CoDs it s easy to forget that every first-person shooter was once set inside a single trench of World War II. Returning to this battlefield might seem like a terrible idea to some who ve served their time in the hellish artillery bombardments of yesteryear. But I never played Day of Defeat, the Half-Life mod upon which this new WWII outing is based. So fumbling with grenades in the mud and snow of the Western front is something I was happy to do. I even tried my hand at commanding the other men. Which obviously resulted in everyone being disintegrated into thousands of tiny pieces.
