As we are all aware, darkness has enveloped Ukraine and a Bandit King seeks to subjugate Her people. We here at Kerberos have always made our games available to service men and women on the frontlines over the past 20 years and right now it seems like all the citizens of the Ukraine are on the front lines of this conflict.

And so, even as we acknowledge how trivial this gesture is in the scheme of things, we make this offer to any citizen of the Ukraine; If you are in any position to need a small distraction from everything yourself or are caring for kids who need some fun, then please reach out and we will send you a copy of anything in our library you would like.

This offer is also open to our sisters and brothers in Russia who are risking their freedom protesting this war. We see you.

Stay strong and never let them take your humanity.

It's Halloween and we've just launched the sequel to The Pit into Early Access (see below)!

To celebrate both, we are rolling the four DLC characters for Sword of the Stars: The Pit into the based game so that anybody curious about where our Roguelike series started can pick up the original game and get to play with ALL the player characters!

Every Halloween the Xombie virus breaks loose in The Pit and mindless, bitey creatures roam the halls looking for blood. Well OK, yes, the halls usually have mindless, bitey creatures roaming them, but these ones are really mean, they appear very early in the game, and they're looking for yooouuuuuuuwah-ah-ah-aaaaah!

(ahem)

Now everyone who owns The PIt can try to survive using the previously DLC characters;

Crush some skulls with the Mercenary and his massive Warhammer! Drain the life of others with a transfuser gun and even stave off death in your Cadeceus armor as The Medic! Bring evil into the light with The Shepard and his mental powers! Or perhaps for Halloween, the best character to try is Zuul necromancer, Azraeus - fight the living dead by making your own undead minions!

Don't forget to carve yourself some Fear Lanterns!
(Psst! Make one, then check it out in your inventory! You can use it to scare monsters!)

Sword of the Stars: The Pit - castewar

Check out Lead Designer Martin Cirulis' launch day post.

Vancouver, Canada - October 22nd, 2021 -

Kerberos Productions has launched Sword of the Stars: The Pit 2 - a sequel to Sword of the Stars: The Pit, the science fiction Roguelike which many players still list among the best of the genre - into Early Access.

In beta, The Pit 2 has moved from 2D to a full and vibrant 3D environment. Instantly clear to players will be new features, such as mini-bosses, and player advancements such as the ability to break down items into components which can then be re-used to craft different items. Alongside the perspective shift which allows for full camera control, and the more flexible approach to crafting, players get a preview of the variety of weapons, armors, and scavenged items that Kerberos fans have come to expect from the original game and its DLC.

The halls of the alien facility have a menagerie of creatures bent on bringing players down. "I am most excited about the opportunities we have to make the Pit smarter, deadlier and more detailed," said Kerberos head and lead designer Martin Cirulis. "Lieutenant-class monsters, floor-organized enemies, secret levels... We have so much more 'necessary sadism' to dispense!"

First released in February of 2013, Sword of the Stars: The Pit grew over the years with many expansions that added new player characters and their powers. A steady parade of game updates included new content along with bug fixes and game tweaks. Through years of developing the original game with a supportive fan base, Kerberos has learned a lot about what their players want.

"This sequel is being tailored to the needs and wishes of its players–the people who spent hundreds of hours in the original game over the past decade. That support has earned them the right to be part of the game's development," said Cirulis. "We invite fans to join Early Access not only to support the game, but to give direct input and shape the future of the franchise."

Like its predecessor, The Pit 2 will allow players to dive deep into an alien lab facility. The sci-fi setting is drawn from the lore of multiple Sword of the Stars games, a franchise that Kerberos has been building for eighteen years. Players start with only their Character's skills and gear: as they explore, they must seek out new supplies and improve their skills in order to survive the ever-increasing dangers of The Pit.

"Ultimately, my goal as a designer is to go beyond the first Pit. First we'll bring the old Roguelike up to modern standards, then we'll push beyond its original limitations," added Cirulis. "There is a whole universe of mad science dungeons out there, just waiting for rogues brave enough to explore their depths!"

Kerberos Productions, the makers of Sword of the Stars, have released a new tabletop simulation game for the PC. Hoards of Glory is a Viking-themed strategy game of dice placement, economy and combat for 1-4 players. Playable by up to four friends via the Internet, it also offers a variety of AI opponents to fill in when human opponents are not available.

Hoards of Glory is the first stand-alone simulation of a tabletop game that Kerberos has released. Their previous tabletop projects, The Pit: The Board Game and Planetary Control, were both modeled using the popular Tabletop Simulator software. Why make a stand-alone product now?

"Tabletop Simulator was a good place for us to start," says developer Chris Gerspacher. "Our version of The Pit: The Board Game on TTS is a popular download and earned us a Steam Community Award. But I found there were limitations to the platform, and it was expensive for newbies. If people didn't already own a copy of TTS it was costing them over $20 to buy the software so they could try a virtual version of Planetary Control or The Pit. I thought we could create a better model of the game and lower that price point if we built something by hand."

Why create a tabletop game using the Unreal Engine? "We are always curious to see what Unreal could do when faced with an unusual challenge," says Kerberos CEO Martin Cirulis. "First we threw randomized terrain and adaptive layouts at UE4 with our game The Pit: Infinity. Now we have discovered it is able to handle the physics of rolling dice and falling coins like a champ and we have had no problem giving the game multiple AI personalities. Unreal also stepped up to the challenges of multiplayer for a tabletop simulation very well. We can have AI's play alongside humans seamlessly or have an AI player drop in if a human player has to drop out."

Why make a tabletop game that's only available for PC? "We missed Game Night!" says Kerberos COO Chris Stewart. "Since the COVID restrictions began in March, everyone has been working remotely. We can't meet friends and go to the pub or a game store to roll dice anymore, and we couldn't take a prototype of Hoards of Glory to Origins and GenCon to connect with new players. A PC simulation of the game seemed like the best option. It helps to keep gaming alive and the dice rolling for us, as well as all the tabletop players who love our games."

Why the Viking theme? "Vikings are fun!" says writer Arinn Dembo. "And they were a perfect fit for the mechanics of the game: spears, shields, hoards of treasure, but also duty and debts to pay. On a more serious note, Viking are part of our heritage. Our whole team is connected to the Viking Diaspora in various ways--our great-grandparents came to the New World from places like Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, Scotland, Ireland, and northern Germany. We either have Viking blood or our ancestors spilled Viking blood--sometimes both!"

Hoards of Glory will be available on Steam from November 6, 2020. The price will be $4.99 USD, with a 30% discount for release week.

If you've recently fired up The Pit, you'll have noticed a small update and a new Main Menu screen... [does best theatrical arm gesture]

...The Osmium Edition!

And immediately you ask, "The what edition?"

The Osmium Edition is our way of closing this chapter of The Pit series. A fancy name for a fancy Roguelike that we've enjoyed sharing with you these past four, nearly five, years (I know, right?)

It's not just a name though. We added;

- 9 new monsters
- 1 new weapon
- 1 new achievement
- 2 new items
- 1 new recipe

...and we fixed that annoying bug where the Time Hole moves the player, but does not actually display new level. Also, the Healer DLC is now available for Mac/Linux users!

If you have The Pit Gold, you'll get the new content. We renamed it The Osmium Edition a) so you'll know you get the new stuff and b) while we have left the DLCs on sale separately, eventually we're going to bundle it all together at a final, single, bundle price. On that day, The Osmium Edition will be everything we've released for The Pit.

As this chapter closes, we've begun new chapters in The Pit series, including The Pit Boardgame - all the dying of the digital original, no electricity required! If you want to know more, be sure to check out The Pit series website and newsletter.
