And people tell me I'm weird for taking my entire game collection to the beach.

It seems like only yesterday that the last Indie Royale bundle graced us with yet another tantalizingly priced collection of independent videogames. But, it was in fact, 19 yesterdays ago, which apparently meets the requisite downtime quota in indie bundle time. So now the Summer Bundle‘s setting up shop on our virtual sidewalks with an adorably misspelled copy edited sign and promises of delicious lemonade games like The Journey Down and Serious Sam 2. In total, there’s a whopping nine >games up for grabs here, so you might consider taking a peek.

Blue has pointed out that we seem to have got some news from 2010 this week, with the arrival of the Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter demo on Steam. The HD version of The Second Encounter was originally release just under two years ago, and has waited until now to get a demo. It seems to be promotion for the 75% sale of the game currently taking place on Steam, but seems like a good opportunity to try it for nowt, should slaughtering endless hordes and delivering a few quips be your sort of thing.

Gah, Sam, quit blinking. Now kill those men again so we can get a better picture.

Hm. This sort of came out of nowhere. Well, maybe not nowhere>, exactly. I mean, free-to-play has voraciously consumed the hearts of every other business model and gained their powers, and Croteam’s been known to host the occasional F2P weekend from time-to-time on Steam. But it still surprised me>, OK? Gosh. At any rate, this is exactly what it sounds like: Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter’s versus and survival multiplayer modes will – beginning May 15 – attempt to carve out their own niche in an increasingly crowded F2P landscape. Probably with bombs.

On the left, press releases about bundles. On the right, the men of RPS.

How many bundles are there? So many bundles. And here’s another from the folks at Indie Royale. This time it’s what they’re calling a Lightning bundle, perhaps because it falls outside their normal release schedule. These types of bundle will, I believe, focus on one series or developer and for the first it’s Serious Sam. So, what do you get?

It may not look like much, because it isn't that much.

I wonder if many other publishers will follow in Devolver Digital’s path of hiring a bunch of indie developers to create a smattering of tie-in games. I know there’s the requisite Facebook/iOS game, but none has gone as far as those offering us Serious Sam 3: BFE next month (if they can stop delaying it). We’ve had Double D, and Kamikaze Attack. And now comes Serious Sam: The Random Encounter. And wouldn’t you know it, it’s fun. Here’s Wot I Think.>

A Serious Sam game without its screaming headless bombermen, the Kamikazes, would not be a Serious Sam game. Hence, it has now been indisputably proven that the upcoming Serious Sam 3: BFE is definitely a Serious Sam game. The bellowing explodey-blokes are back, but they’re… different.
