🎞️ Devlog #4
Perhaps you're wondering what's going on with the sequel, and why the missed release dates this year? All is explained in this video! Spoilers, though, it's nothing remotely scandalous :(

And a quick clarification about the release date:

The Early Access release of Streets of Rogue 2 will happen in 2025.
The exact date will only be revealed once we're 100% sure of that date. That's all I'll be saying about release dates until the time comes :) Until then, check the Devlog out:



🗺️ Roadmap
October's release of the Streets of Rogue 2 Alpha Demo generated a lot of questions from players. In response, I present to you a living public Roadmap! Click the button below to check it out.

The Roadmap should give you a solid idea of my plans for SoR 2 throughout its pre-Early Access and Early Access periods. A warning: it's pretty lengthy, and I wouldn't recommend reading it from start to finish. Think of it more as a reference guide to look at if you're curious about some specific aspect of the game. And feel free to let me know if you think anything is missing from this!

Streets of Rogue 2 Development Roadmap

🎮 Patch for the SoR 2 Demo: Full Gamepad Support
The previous iteration of the SoR 2 Demo had very basic, hacked-in gamepad support. This new patch has proper gamepad support so that essentially everything that can be done with a mouse and keyboard can now be done with a controller.

Happy Turkey Day!

With Thanksgiving once again upon us, I wanted to take a second to say a HUGE thanks to all of you. It's been a hectic, relentless sort of year to say the least, and your support has really meant a lot to me. Here's how:

🛠️ Streets of Rogue 2 Support
The hype for this game has always been a major source of encouragement, and this year was no exception! But in particular this year, I especially appreciate everyone's PATIENCE! 😄 Missing multiple release dates isn't something I was anticipating at the start of 2024, but the encouraging and understanding responses I've received have helped a lot to make me more comfortable with things. (And to be crystal clear, going forward there will be no more release date announcements until I'm 100% sure!)

📢 Feedback
Every suggestion, comment, and nutty idea helps make the sequel better. Great insights can spark from anywhere, so I make an effort to read everything that gets posted. I'm super thankful you keep all this feedback coming here on Steam, on our official Discord server, in the subreddit, and scrawled on my patio... My son used this medium to inquire about SOR2's release date.

🎮 SOR 2 Demo
I'm always down for some good ol' constructive criticism, and boy oh boy did I get it this year! Admittedly the Streets of Rogue 2 demo released in a bit rougher shape than I'd have liked, and while I'm thankful that most players have been understanding of this "not fully cooked" status, the more critical feedback that I've received has been tremendously helpful. Rest assured that no issue is going unnoticed!

The demo will continue to get updates until Early Access (including one very soon with full gamepad support), so be sure to check in once in awhile and shoot me some feedback, as it will really help the game to launch in better shape!

🙌 Community Events
Just loads of good vibes and high energy all around. The overall positivity of the Streets of Rogue community is an increasingly rare thing in the internet gaming landscape, or really any internet landscape.

Hey everybody,

Matt here, and I’ve got some development news about Streets of Rogue 2.

  • 🎮 The Streets of Rogue 2 Island Alpha Demo is OUT NOW, just in time for Steam Next Fest!

  • 📅 Streets of Rogue 2’s Early Access release is moving from October 22 to some other point in the near future. Keyword “near”, we don’t intend for this to be an enormous wait. The exact date will be announced closer to launch.
We had previously announced a large-scale playtest of the game. The demo release will essentially be replacing that since it includes the same content that I was planning for the playtest.

So first off, why the delays? Well, the TL;DR is “Big Open-Ended Game + Solo Programmer = Unpredictable Timeline.” October 22 seemed like a viable date back in July, but ultimately despite my best efforts, I felt the game needed a bit more time in the oven. My sincere apologies for the delays, I fully understand how annoying it can be to look forward to something only to have the rug pulled. That’s why we won’t be announcing any more specific dates until it’s a 100% lock.


All that said, you can play the alpha demo right now! Here’s what to expect from it:

  • The demo includes a small chunk of the game world featuring content that may or may not be included in the full release. You’ll be playing on an island away from the main landmass where the game takes place.
  • The goal of the demo is to take down the Mayor or otherwise gain their favor. However, you’re free to pursue other goals if you please.


  • You’ll have access to a small selection of character classes, allowing you to tackle the content from multiple angles.

  • The world is randomly generated, though the key features of the island will be similar on each playthrough.
  • I will try to slip in some mutators before release or shortly after.
  • The demo has partial controller support, full support will be implemented in the demo later.
  • Local co-op support is also not in the demo initially but will be added after release.
  • Online multiplayer is also not available in this demo.
  • I’ll continue updating the demo up to the Early Access release based on feedback from players and other changes that I’m making to the full game.
Prior to the Early Access launch of the original Streets of Rogue, the game had been available for free, which allowed me to take in community feedback and launch the game in a state that I felt very confident about. I’ve long felt the absence of this back-and-forth during SOR2’s development, but given how much larger and more complex of a game SOR2 is, I feel like much of the feedback would have been something to the effect of “I launched the game and was immediately sucked into a black void where I was eaten by Cannibals who are missing their eyeball textures. Then my graphics card blew up, and you owe me for my ER visit.” In essence, it wouldn’t have been much fun for anybody.

At this point in development, I’d consider the game to be a lot closer to being Early Access-ready, as the game’s foundations are pretty solid. However, polish is still needed in order to bring the core game loop and progression system to where they need to be, and bugs are still a little too prevalent for my liking. For me, that’s a very exciting place to be. There are just enough not-super-well-defined elements in the game that I feel like pre-release community feedback would be very beneficial.

So basically, consider this demo to be a fairly rough (but hopefully pretty fun) taste of what’s to come that will give you a sense of the systemic/gameplay possibilities of SOR2. But also, don’t be surprised if the initial questgiver gets mauled by a bear 🐻 before you can get your bearings (no pun intended) because they decided to spawn on the beach where you start the game for some reason. (To be fair, I fixed that one last night, but you get the idea!)

Hi all, Matt here!

I have a couple bits of development news! Here’s the short version:
  1. 📅 Streets of Rogue 2 is moving from its original release date of August 14th to a new release date of October 22nd.
  2. 🎮 We’ll be conducting an Open Playtest on Steam in the near future, free for anyone to join!
But wait, a new release date? What’s going on here? What sort of shenanigans are at play? Well, I assure you the answer is a lot less interesting than that. I, uh… couldn’t program quite fast enough. :p

While SoR 2 has had a few more folks working on it than its predecessor, I’m still the sole programmer/designer of this thing. Compared with other disciplines, programmers are notoriously bad at predicting how long a given task will take. Now replace “task” with “entire Early Access-ready game,” and as you can probably imagine, guesstimating correctly gets a tad trickier. I’d been targeting a summer launch for a while, which has led to a pretty intense 2024. And while the original release date would have been technically achievable, it would have also been tighter than I was comfortable with. The new date allows me some breathing room and the opportunity to make the game that much better.

The new release date will also give me time to conduct a large-scale Pre-Release Playtest. If Streets of Rogue’s history tells me anything, this should benefit development. Before the original SoR went into Early Access, I released a bunch of builds of the game for free. This was super useful for getting player feedback and paved the way for a smooth launch on Steam.

The ETA for the future Playtest is late August / early September. Stay tuned for more news on that!

The prospect of releasing a pre-Early Access version of SoR 2 has often crossed my mind. But while SoR 1’s simple level-based structure lent itself well to creating nice little vertical slices of gameplay to iterate on, SoR 2’s long-gestating open world and numerous broader-scale systems have taken longer to gel. Even then, there’s still a LOT of malleability in a lot of areas of the game, which is why I’d like to hear your opinions!

Hey there, rogues!

Today marks the 5th Anniversary of the release of Streets of Rogue! Thank you for being with us all this time, people! Time really flies. The game entered Early Access on Steam back in 2017. And look where we are now! It's already been five years since this game's full release in 2019. So many memories were made, and so many are still to come, with the sequel on the horizon.

Unfortunately, due to the Mayor's budget cuts, there will not be cake for the anniversary event. Instead, to reminisce on the times, we decided to host a lil' anniversary event!

📜 Video Clip Event Rules 📜

  • From July 12th to July 26th, share your gameplay video clips from Streets of Rogue with us. All kinds of memorable moments are welcome: funny or ridiculously absurd situations, a near-death experience of avoiding the game over screen with 1 HP, you name it. Feel free to include voice-over, subtitles (preferred language: English), overlays, or memes; however, the video you submit must be based on gameplay footage.
  • Your video submission must be from 10 seconds to 1 minute long.
  • Multiple submissions from one person are allowed. Both older and newly-recorded clips are eligible.
  • You can upload video clips to file hosting services like Dropbox or Google Drive and share the link in the comments. You can also upload a video to YouTube (Public or Unlisted—as you prefer.) Alternatively, join our Discord server and share your submission in the "5-year-anniversary" channel. Members of our server are currently voting for the best clips; the 10 best videos with the most votes will be featured on our Twitter (X) profile.
  • The contest concludes on July 26 at 7:00 PM CET / 1 pm ET / 10 am PT.
