Version 1.1 - New Content
For the Steam release of Foregone, we wanted to build upon the core experience of Foregone and bring all-new ways to experience the world of Calagan.

You'll find all of these enhancements on day one in an all-new update.

New Content
New Weapons to Collect and Upgrade
The Warscythe
Sleek and punishing, the Warscythe is a devastating weapon to unleash when surrounded on all sides. Its long reach and swift striking ability make it the perfect addition to player's arsenals who like to charge headfirst into battle.

Inherent Mod: Each hit weakens enemies

Shock Pistol
Why eliminate one enemy with a single bullet when you can eliminate three? Through the POWER OF SCIENCE, now you can unleash the electric potential of the Shock Pistol and chain together single shots into devastating multi-hits.

Inherent Mod: Each shot arcs to nearby enemies

New Side Missions to Discover and Complete
Throughout the world of Calagan you will now encounter hidden distress beacons. Once discovered, you'll be able to access a series of new side missions from a new NPC, The Dispatcher, in the Outpost.

There are three different categories of side missions to complete:
  • Hazards: Timed challenges which will test your speed and platforming skills as you navigate a twisting environment filled with hazards
  • Combat: Race to eliminate all targets in the area before time expires
  • Gauntlet: THe ultimate test of combat and platforming abilities, a true test of an Arbiter's abilities

As a reward for completing these side missions, you'll receive a plethora of currency, a shiny new item, and be able to visit the all-new Warsmith.

New NPC - The Warsmith
Upon completing the trials found within the new side missions, you'll encounter the Warsmith. Visit this new NPC armed with your favourite weapon to re-roll one of the perks on the weapon.

When rerolling weapon perks, you'll be presented with 3 alternate perks to bind with the weapon. Choose wisely as the first re-roll is free of charge as a reward for your challenge completion, but be warned the price for each future roll increases.

New Boss Encounters
What's an update without more boss battles to test your might? And test your might you will as you'll encounter four new boss encounters against your corrupted frenemy, The Warden...

We want to thank each and every one of you who's patiently waited for the release of Foregone here on Steam. We're so excited for you to finally get your hands on the game and can't wait for you to explore the world of Calagan...

We wanted to give an update to players looking forward to playing Foregone here on Steam. Following the release on the Epic Games Store, Foregone will release on Steam on March 1st, 2021. Epic Games has been a supportive partner throughout development, allowing us to make Foregone the game we want it to be, and we look forward to continuing to work with them. We do however acknowledge and respect a player’s choice to purchase and play a game on the storefront of their choice.

Not a whole lot more to say, we just wanted to give a quick update on the Steam release for those who had been asking. For those who choose to wait we hope to see you in the streets of Calagan March 2021!

- The Foregone Team
Foregone - MPMHammond
Our team has been working tirelessly on every detail of Foregone to produce a game that we hope you all will appreciate and enjoy.

Today, Big Blue Bubble and the Epic Games Store announced during The Game Awards that Foregone is joining the storefront’s list of exclusive titles.

This means Foregone will launch in Early Access exclusively on the Epic Games Store on February 27, 2020, followed by major consoles later in the year.

We’d like to thank you for your continued support throughout Foregone’s journey! Your enthusiasm for Foregone is amazing, and we can’t wait to share the game with you. If you can’t wait to get your hands on Foregone, we’ll be at PAX South in San Antonio, January 17th – 19th with a playable demo at the PAX Rising booth! So come by and try it out. We look forward to keeping the conversation going with you on our official Discord.

Thanks,

The Foregone Team

Recently, we received a question on the Discussion forum about the process behind how we’re making Foregone. We thought it would be an excellent opportunity to take a deeper dive as part of a Dev Update with Big Blue Bubble’s Art Director, Dan Rickard.

High Level Look
At a very high level, the general art process can be broken down into five stages - concept, model, texture, animation, and in-game. How we get there though is slightly different depending on whether we’re working with characters or environment art.

For characters, we start with thumbnail sketches to gather inspiration and look for a strong silhouette. These are very quick and basic drawings to find general appeal and interest with an emphasis on overall body shape as it needs to be legible from both size on screen and being pixelated. After the drawing is approved, characters and environments are modelled and textured. These are then eventually brought into Unity where a post-process pixelation effect is then added over the art to help bring it to the desired look.

Conception
When you’re conceiving and dreaming up these characters and worlds, it can be an iterative process, and that’s one reason why we’ve chosen to work in 3D. Some assets are a single drawing to decide and others are dozens. One would think that the complexity of an object would dictate the number of variations. However, sometimes it is the most simple of objects that require more back and forth as moving a few pixels a little this way or that can have significant outcomes. An example of this is the hair of the main character. Probably dozens of hairstyles were tried until we finally found one that the majority approved.

After the drawing is approved, 3d modelling begins. Characters are modelled in low poly technique with emphasis on retaining the previously mentioned silhouette as well as anticipating any rigging issues for future animation needs. The mesh is then unwrapped, and a simple texture is applied. The texture focuses on tonal contrast between details as well as the thickness of detail to help push the legibility later on.

Bringing Foregone to life
When designing the environment and objects that make up the world of Foregone, we want to maintain as much detail as possible, while not causing a loss in performance. By modelling and through the use of normal maps and dynamic lights, we can still get the same look of 3d depth on the 2d sprites, allowing us to create a rich and vibrant world.

For characters, once they’re modelled in 3D, they’re animated and then exported for use in Unity. The reason we keep our characters in 3D is two-fold. One, it creates a faster and more efficient pipeline for tweaking and approving animations. And two, it allows us to make in-engine mesh swaps without the need to rebake an entire sprite sheet every time a change is made. This technique enables us to save an exponential amount of time and put greater focus into making the characters look and feel right in the world.

With the decreased time for animation to in-game, we’re able to get our hands on things quicker and get a true feeling of what it feels like in-game. From there, our programmers implement customized post-processing filters to get a more traditional pixelated type of look. It looks exactly the same as if we had baked out the characters into sprite sheets, but we get all the benefits of using 3d characters.

Hopefully, you've enjoyed this behind the scenes look at the creative side of Foregone. As always be sure to wishlist Foregone and check back for more updates on development as we get closer to release.
