Greetings Keepers!

 

How’s everyone doing? Are your plants prospering in the summer heat, or have you decided to escape to the freezing Glacialis instead? The Keepers were also away for a short while to visit Japan, and they can’t wait to share this news with you in our July round-up!

Horticular was back at BitSummit, the largest indie game festival in Japan! With the event highlighting Yokais/folklore creatures, our Keepers were pumped to be back in Kyoto to meet some fellow magical beings and gamers intrigued by their mysterious presence. Of course, seeing so many players enjoying Horticular certainly put the Keepers and our critters in an excellent mood. A big shoutout to our helpers and BitSummit’s organiser for making this amazing event happen!

New Patches!

A couple new patches just hit Horticular in July with QoL improvements, fixes and even a new plant variant! The game might have seemed a bit quiet for a while, but keep your eyes peeled – more news coming soon!

Community Gardens

It’s been some time since our last community garden showcase, and we’ve gotten quite a few submissions over the past couple months. So let’s see what our community has conjured with their wildest imagination!

Let’s start with this submission from Zarah. A peaceful atmosphere in the story campaign. A few of our birds are roaming in the scene. Can you spot them?

From freezing glaciers to scorching lava, SapphireDragon made full use of Anubscorpiak’s Tiny Magic mod. The variety of thematic biomes and items is absolutely incredible in this community creation, and really goes to show the boundless creativity of both our modders and players!

Next Up, we have Arugiro’s impressive winter garden from the Frozen Frontier DLC with a few close-ups: An open-air space (with nice lighting too) for the Keepers; cabins hidden deep in the forest; a garden blurred by snowfall. This sprawling landscape really captures the various vibes of Frozen Frontier, don’t you think?

That’s all we have for July – the Keepers are back from Japan and are busy unpacking their bags in their tiny cottages.  As mentioned earlier, there will be more news coming to Horticular in the future, so stay tuned and follow us on our socials!

Argus - Cornutopia
Another update to Argus today:
-First new feature is a right-click in the modulator length box can now be used to calculate and set the speed to one beat of a piece of music. Set FX to your beats-per-minute to use.
-Tracks can be be 'optimally' split, rather than needing to work out the ideal number.
-Edit level editing when no selection is set will now ask to apply per-track.

And a few other changes. Full details are in the Readme.txt file.

Vital Issues Fixed

 

  1. Fixed an issue where Hero Pool Expansion Training would only offer fixed items in certain specific situations.

 

Fix

 

  1. Fixed an issue with the special effect of hero card \[Mandala Flower].

  2. Fixed an abnormal number of heroes in some AI team hero pools.

  3. Fixed an issue in Rogue mode where adjusting the version transition speed did not increase the number of ban slots as expected.

  4. Fixed an issue where AI would ban heroes from the hero pool of players who had already selected those heroes.

  5. Fixed some localization text issues.

 

Gameplay Adjustments And Optimizations

 

  1. In Rogue mode, before the final match of each stage, if the player has not used their loss protection, they can choose to skip the match.

 

Issues to Be Fixed And Pending Optimizations

 

  1. Multiple hero skills that increase levels did not level up correctly when activated simultaneously.

  2. In battle, \[kid] could revive abnormally due to passive healing if dying at the same time as other units.

First day of August and the local grocery store has already started sticking out Halloween candy. Don't worry - we'll resist the urge and hold the line here.

Notable Changes:
  • New low-gravity Marshmallow Challenges.
  • 2 new Hats added into the mix.
  • More tweaks to ease the suffering in Challenge Mode:
    - Streak requirements for earning hearts have been lowered
    - Several extremely difficult challenge sets have been replaced
    - The time granted for each stage now takes the types of modifiers into account properly
    - Any changes to the stage now show up during the intro animation before game play begins
  • Initial loading is significantly faster, and should no longer freeze the UI for most machines
  • The game should now show the correct name and icon in the Windows Volume Mixer

Good News!!
We have some new music!

I would like to thank Yellow Cherry Jam for allowing us to use some of their songs within the game.
We came across them one day on YouTube and fell in love with their music. It's lovely to hear and see some non-AI generated tunes. Make sure you check them out on YouTube & Bandcamp. Also, they have a very beautiful puppy that you can watch while you listen and watch them make music.

Okay, wait—what just happened?

We were still busy celebrating the 10k paddlers milestone, proudly handing out #10k golden paddles like participation trophies from hell… and now we're here like:

“Oh. Cool. It’s 20,000 now.”

20,000 brave (or very confused) souls.
20,000 chances for a co-op friendship to go horribly wrong.

9 Available Game Modes

Langit Lupa, Twenty Juan, Labo Labo, Ice Ice Tubig, Agawan Base, Pasabog, Capture the Flag, Balik Bayan, and CLAYGO

  • Added functionality to hide the mouse cursor during gameplay.

  • Added grey smoke VFX when picking up items.

  • Added a search bar to the lobby list.

  • When items are thrown and hit the walls or floor, they will crack, and there’s a chance they might also be destroyed.

  • Thrown items will crack upon impact with walls or the floor, and there is a probability that they may be destroyed.

  • Added small dust VFX when players run on the floor. No dust trail while jumping.

  • The arcade machine shakes whenever a player joins the game.

  • Added small help text and a crying face emoji above prisoners.

  • Added crack effects when passing the bomb.

  • Added player sound effects using developer voices.

Encounter - Defence Force
When I presented the game to people who had never played a classic adventure game before, it quickly became clear that they were unsure how to proceed. They would either wander aimlessly and get lost, collect every item they saw until their inventory was full, or fail to pick up items and forget where they had been.

To assist new players, I wrote this article , which covers topics like making a map, managing items, and more.
