Tropico Reloaded - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Chase Carter)

Winter brings out a part of me that immediately seeks a mountain of blankets in which to burrow. Even in my seasonally confused state of Texas, the weather has tended towards the chilly and left me with little excuse not to have a kettle boiling interminably as I layer on socks and pull the biggest comforter from the top of the closet. But this presents a problem likely familiar to other cozy connoisseurs: how does one game while properly bundled?

I will admit it does limit possibilities considerably. That’s why I’ve curated a small selection of games perfectly playable while your other hand keeps coffee or tea always within sipping range.

Congratulations, Age Of Wonders: Planetfall – you’re a real sci-fi world now. From Forerunners to Protheans and everything in between, no spacefaring adventure is complete without an enigmatic, questionably-malevolent ancient precursor people that vanished without a trace. Released today, Planetfall’s Revelations expansion heralds the return of the nasty old Heritors and lets you begin your imperial ambitions by clawing out of the grave.

The first expansion for sci-fi strategy game Age Of Wonders: Planetfall will begin to resurrect an ancient dynasty of technocorpses keen to reclaim their territory and secrets, Paradox announced today at PDXCON. Revelations is its name, and launching in November is its game. The Es’Teq dynasty will stir with the help of their Heritor descendents in new campaign missions, and folks will get play with secret Heritor tech which sounds a whole lot like death magic to me. Also, giant bog-eyed pigs drooling green slime are involved, because reasons. Meet the technofogies in the announcement trailer below.

Hark, for the dawn of another wondrous age approaches. Or at least a competent one. Nate and Astrid have both taken a good hard look at Age Of Wonders: Planetfall and have declared: (in different, longer words)’yeah, that’s pretty good that is’. It’s a 4X game that pans down into small-scale tactical combat, wedding gross imperialist strategy to itty bitty unit bossing through the medium of “buff ladies riding laser dinosaurs”.

I ll be honest, I came dangerously close to not recognising Age Of Wonders: Planetfall for what it is: a solid, well-designed strategy game. Like a jaded ogre examining bones for shreds of meat, I nearly tossed it aside with a grunt, letting it plonk down the bone-hill into the Steam refunds ossuary. But then, I would have missed out on the rich, dense marrow within.

Intricate 4X strategy games don t benefit much from short demos, especially during the annual videogames vomitorium of E3. But a short demo is what I got with Age Of Wonders: Planetfall. I would need far more time to get an understanding for the Civ-like encroachment of its world map. And I can’t give you a solid impression of the battles based on the single brief tussle I had. All I can say is that I liked this giant squidlike warbeast called the Plague Lord, and I think he should be elected Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

They just keep coming don’t they? A lot of games were announced at E3 2019, things that we didn’t know about, as well as stuff that’s previously announced, or expansions to already released games. Now, to the casual outsider, what we’re doing might seem absolutely nuts, but we thought we’d put together an alphabetical list of all the PC games that have been confirmed to appear at this year’s E3 show. With well over a hundred of them now in the books, the next year or so looks packed.
