Gender and Security Patch - Future Updates and Features

Hello storytellers!

We hope all our new users are enjoying Campfire this week! As always, you can report any bugs you find under the “help” tab in Campfire, and we’ll start creating fixes right away! This has been a busy week for us, we won’t always have this many updates so close together, but we’re working around the clock to make Campfire the best it can be!

First, The Gender Update is a mandatory update for Steam and Non-Steam. It is available for download now. The previous version of Campfire will not work. This update will not affect your stories, everything will be right where you left it. The Gender Update contains security improvements that require us to do the patch this way. We do not anticipate mandatory updates will become a regular occurrence. We’ve had three updates this week, but we plan on future ones being larger with more features and fixes releasing every two weeks. The next update set is the Customization Update which will release in early-mid December, depending on how long the subsequent security fixes take us to nail down. Here are the changes for the Gender Update:

• Gender fix (Gender will be a text box instead of a binary drop-down menu. We created this change as quickly as possible because we know how important it is to our users. We appreciate your patience concerning any bugs with this change. Thank you all for the time you take to report such bugs.)
• Added unit (pixels) to the “width” when uploading an image of a map.
• Various security improvements

Second, we created an "Update Roadmap" on our site which you can find here: We compiled all of the feature requests we have gotten so far and posted them online, so you know what we’re planning and what to look forward to! Our goal is to be as vocal as possible when it comes to updates. If you see anything missing from the future updates list, please email The list isn’t explicit in detail, we have many smaller changes coming with those updates as well. However, we think the general features we have listed should give you a good idea of what we’re focusing on.

This isn’t a precise schedule. We are college students, and sometimes school, social lives, and family have to come first. We will do our best to adhere to the schedule we have, but we appreciate your understanding if an update comes a week early or a week later than planned. (It all kind of depends on the features being added and the time of year.) We’re going to update the site with a visual indicator (like a checkmark) so users can follow along with the progression of updates leading up to their release. As we continue work on Campfire, we will be able to figure out how long updates typically take, so we’ll be able to better give precise dates later on.
We hope you all are enjoying using Campfire. As always, we’d love to see what you create on social media if you’d like to share it with us at any of these locations:

Now go write some fantastic stories!

Steam Update - The Future of Campfire and Misc. Details

Hello Campfire storytellers!

We just had an update a few days ago, but we’ve got a little one ready to go again!

Steam Achievements
There was a small bug affecting the “Days in a Row” statistic on Steam. As a result, some users weren’t receiving related achievements. This update contains a bug fix for these achievements. We thank you for your patience!

Steam Update details:
• Open Story has been split to Open Story from Cloud and Open Story from File.
• New Story has been split to New Story to Cloud and New Story to file.
• Save Story As has been split to Duplicate Story to Cloud and Duplicate Story to File.
• Delete Story has been added to the Campfire main menu.

Some users wanted to have a file of their story saved locally to their computer, so these various options should allow users to do so! Some users were receiving errors and had confusion because they had not logged into Steam after launching Campfire. All users need to log into Steam one time after downloading in order to use the software. Users cannot access Campfire until they log in for the first time. A pop-up window with a Steam login will appear if you have not logged in. If you experience any issues with accessing Campfire after logging in with Steam, please contact

Feature Requests:
Thank you to everyone who has suggested features for Campfire! We will go through the suggested features and implement them in order of demand, ease, and feasibility. We’re loving all the feature ideas and requests we are receiving on Steam. Another way you can request features for those not on Steam is by emailing Thank you all for your patience!

Thankfully, we haven’t had many bugs thus far! If you experience any bugs, we encourage you to report them on the Steam discussion page, or use the “help” tab and the “Report a Bug” tab within Campfire to report these issues to our software developers directly.

Overly Sarcastic Productions:
We would like to personally welcome all the fans who came from Overly Sarcastic Production’s video who came to check out Campfire. For those who have not seen the video or would like to enjoy some great YouTube content on Time Travel Tropes in literature and movies follow this link:

We’re excited to have so many members of the wonderful OSP community join Campfire! Thank you all for helping make our dreams come true, we hope Campfire continues to meet your expectations as we continually update it.

The Gender Issue
In our panic to fix bugs and make sure Campfire doesn’t break, we overlooked some important details in Campfire. Notably, the only options for gender currently are male and female. It has been brought to our attention this isn’t inclusive of other gender identities or for stories that have cultures and species that do not adhere to binary gender identification. We wanted to let everyone know, we are working on a fix for it, and we will push that update through just as fast as we can! Thank you for understanding and being patient with us.

Update Roadmap
Our intent is to be as vocal as possible with regards to our future plans with Campfire. We are currently working on an update roadmap and discussing the best ways to share this roadmap with users. The future updates will ideally give users an idea of what we are working on and when it should be arriving. Let us know on social media if you would rather see these developer discussions/update roadmap in a text form like this or as a YouTube video.

Social Media
We wanted to throw out one last reminder to like our Facebook page, follow us on Twitter, subscribe to our YouTube channel, follow our Steam page, and check out our brand new subreddit!

Thank you one final time for making this such an amazing week for Campfire! We’re excited to embark on this journey with you all, and we can’t wait to see what you all create with our software! Quit reading this and go write some great stories!

About This Software

Complete your character design, plot manipulation, and worldbuilding all in one place. Designed to be a revolutionary tool for writers to plan out their stories, Campfire Pro is the writing software novelists and screenwriters need to go from the seed of an idea to a detailed plan that’s ready to be executed.

Character Development: Add characters with essential information like name, age, and personality traits. Then flesh out your characters by adding backstory, relationships, and custom panels.

Plot Design: Use the powerful Timeline tool to add scenes and other plot events. A straightforward drag-and-drop interface allows for easy reorganization and story manipulation.

Worldbuilding: Campfire Pro is also a full-featured worldbuilding tool. Upload an unlimited number of maps, then add pins for each location. Flesh out your locations with history, culture, and politics.

Campfire strives to be flexible and inspiring, providing a variety of features to achieve these goals. Each character has their own cork board, which holds an unlimited amount of custom panels and images. The Timeline is infinite, allowing writers to work with an endless canvas as they add a plethora of scenes and events. The World page allows users to upload any number of maps and pin locations onto them, creating a concrete, visual resource to geographically keep track of the story. Finally, Campfire’s seven themes provide different aesthetics to work within, keeping writers inspired regardless of genre. Fantasy novelists can expect a medieval-style writing experience, while Sci-Fi writers receive a visually high-tech version of Campfire. For writers who don’t want a dramatic theme, the Simple Light and Simple Dark themes allow for a plain, distraction-free writing experience.
