What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Grand Strategy has always been designed by the players. Grand Strategy began as a web-based game. And during the years that it was playable on the web, the players actively participated in the design, as well as contributing many maps.

The goal for the new Grand Strategy is the same: crowd designed, with significant player generated content.

The Casual Mode of play is up and working and fully bug tested. But the design of the Campaign Mode is still its infancy. We are looking for player input around the structure of the campaigns.

  • How are victory points awarded during a campaign?
  • What is the duration of a campaign?
  • What powers should be given to faction leaders?
  • What types of campaigns would the players like to see? Fantasy based, World War II, etc.

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game will be in early access for approximately three to five months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to add many helpful animations to the maps. There will be attack indicators on the map to indicate which territories can be attacked, as well as explosion animations for conquering a territory.

The full version will support many advanced RISK features. These features are under development and not yet working:

Command Cards
Fog of war

The full version will support Campaigns: faction based tournament style combat.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“In the early version, Campaigns cannot yet be joined or created by the players. Campaigns are the faction based combat that occurs on the overland maps.

Casual mode is fully bug tested and playable. The majority of the code was ported over from Grand Strategy's earlier web-based version.

Multiplayer games are working. All game options on the Create Game screen are currently supported.

These features are currently supported in the latest builds:

Real Time (5, 7 minute) and Slower (24 Hour) Turn Duration
Team games
Two to ten players
Sequential and Simultaneous Turn Order
Adjacent, Connected, Bordering and Unlimited Fortification
Four Bonus Card Options
Preset and Placed Initial Armies
Play up to six active games with no Premium Account”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game will not be priced differently during early access.

It's possible that a non-Free version will be released after Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community can submit maps, and will be fully involved in the development of campaigns and factions.

Players are encouraged to participate and suggest features.”

About This Game

Grand Strategy is a massive multiplayer game inspired by the board game RISK. Grand Strategy will feature two modes of play: Campaign and Casual.

Campaign Mode

In Campaign mode, two factions will fight for victory in one grand war, on one large overworld map. When you join a campaign, you choose a faction. The factions control territories on the overworld map. By competing in separate games (or battles), factions gain and lose territories. Territories confer victory points, and the faction to gain the most victory points will emerge victorious.

Campaign mode is new to the board game RISK. It's never been tried before. In other turn-based strategy games, you play one game, you win or lose, and you move on to the next game. In Grand Strategy, a faction must coordinate and plan across many different games. We plan on adding different types of Campaigns all based around a series of theme based maps. The initial Campaign will be Fantasy based. Then we would like to build a World War II Campaign.

(Note: Campaign Mode is under development and not yet available in the game.)

Casual Mode

Grand Strategy supports Special Units, which can be deployed alongside your armies to lead them in battle.

In Casual mode, you create, join and play games at your leisure: log in and play a real-time game with your friends. Or join a game with daily turns and work your way up the leader board. In slow play mode, you can pause games, enjoy your weekend, then come back days later and continue the game.

But if you want to play a RISK-like game as it has never been played before: join a campaign. Lead your faction to victory.

A mobile client is in development, and just like the Steam Client, it can be played for free (with no advertisements).

It might sound silly, but our goal is to build the best RISK client and user interface in the world. Look at the features below. There is no other RISK client on Steam that supports these features.

  • Team games
  • Special Units
  • Two to ten players
  • Fog of War
  • Multiple fortification and bonus card options
  • Scenarios
  • Capitals
  • Missions
  • Strongholds (+1 to defense die)

(Note: Scenarios, Capital, Missions and Fog of War are not implemented. These will be implemented during the Steam Early Access period.)

The Grand Strategy server maintains a complete history of every game you played. All the games you've played, and all the games your opponents have played will be searchable and viewable. There's no better anti-cheat mechanism than being able to see every game your opponents have played. We are planning on building a replay system into the client so that you can watch old games.
