Why Early Access?

“The first Early Access version will cover the first three chapters of the adventure. Players can vote how the adventure ends and how the remaining chapters of the game shall look like. Do you want a romantic ending? A tragic one? A complete twist of the story? Your suggestions and your votes will determine how the story ends!

In addition, the player feedback will be used to improved the game's balancing to make sure the puzzles are fun for everyone.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The Early Access campaign will be six months. After eight weeks, the players feedback will be used to design and create the remaining chapters which will be published in the following weeks.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Monkeys & Dragons tells the story of Lana, whose husband got kidnapped during their honeymoon. No one wants to help her, so she will rescue him by herself. The entire adventure will be told in five chapters. The Early Access version starts with three chapters telling the story of Lana and how she becomes an adventurer, solves quests to become stronger and finally tracks down the sorcerer who kidnapped her husband. The final version of the game will feature all five chapters to conclude the story and the adventure.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The final game will feature five chapters that tell the story of how Lana becomes an adventurer and saves her husband. The Early Access version will start with three fully implemented chapters. The final two chapters will be added during the Early Access campaign.

Explore a tropical island, gather and combine any sort of items, talk to the island's residents and solve different kinds of puzzles to become a true adventurer!”

Beta Update #2

I spent the last days with improving the current beta test version of Monkeys & Dragons. I want to thank all beta testers who sent me e-mails in the last days. The feedback was very positive and I thank you for all the ideas you sent me. Many suggestions are already part of this update.

New features
  • Added support for Steam Cloud
  • The quest journal lists all tasks you need to do for the current chapter.

  • When advancing to a new chapter, the unlocked scenes are displayed.
  • The map in the Souvenir Shop now has the same Pixel Art style as the shop.
  • After using certain one-use objects in the world, they can now longer be examined or used.

  • There is a new option to use always white dialog texts. This is meant to support color blind people.

  • Dan gives now two rewards after completing his task. In case you played the game before this update, you will get the item before you need it. Don't worry!
  • When controls are locked during cutscenes, a proper text is displayed at the top of the screen.
  • Improved mouse behaviour when moving the mouse cursor over different types of discoverable objects.
  • The game version and copyright information in the main menu are now displayed larger and in Pixel Art style.
  • The game is now started in fullscreen by default.

Bug Fixes
  • A problem that could cause game crashes has been fixed.
  • The main menu showed the wrong game version number.
  • It was possible to collect one item in two different scenes. Now, you can only collect it once - in any of these scenes.
  • It was possible to interrupt the sequence in which you defeat the spearmaster.
  • The interactions with the spearmaster looked odd with certain fullscreen resolutions.
  • Movement animations for the Beautiful Woman and the Monkey were wrong for certain fullscreen resolutions.
  • The overlay animations could be have the wrong size, if the screen resolution changed while playing the game.
  • It was possible to use a certain item combination twice, although it should only be possible once.
  • FIxed several typos

Beta Update #1

Last week, the first 75 beta testers gained access to Monkeys & Dragons. Today, I want to publish the first update of the pre-Early Access version of the game. More updates will follow soon. Your next chance to beta test Monkeys & Dragons and to get a free copy of the game is next week on IndieDB!

The patch notes below are as generic as possible to avoid spoilers!

  • New sound effects were added to various scenes, e.g. when using the shovel or when you advance to the next chapter.
  • The duration of one of the rat's animations has been increased.
  • The description of the city's gate has been changed to City centre

Dialogs & Puzzles
  • When talking to Dan or the spearmaster more than once, their initial monologue is shorter.
  • The name of one object in the spearmaster estate has been changed to give a hint how to defeat her.

  • The game does auto-save whenever you enter a new scene.
  • When you walk away from an object you just examined, any visible texts becomes hidden.
  • The display duration of the chapter advancement screen has been slightly reduced.

  • You could get multiple rewards from Dan after talking to him several times after solving his task.
  • Fixed two typos in dialog texts

About This Game

Monkeys & Dragons is an Indie Retro Adventure inspired by video game classics like Monkey Island, Indiana Jones or Simon the Sorcerer.


Jack and Lana just started their honeymoon, when Jack was kidnapped by a sorcerer who turned out to be Jack's ex-boyfriend. No one wants to help Lana to rescue her husband, so she decides to take matters into her own hands. On her rescue mission, she becomes an adventurer, completes quests and solves dangerous puzzles. However, there was something she wasn't prepared for...


You play as Lana and you have to rescue her husband on a tropical island full of monsters and mysteries. The Early Access version launches with three chapters that end with an open ending. All players can make suggestions for the game's ending and vote for the ending that will be integrated into the game. So, you have the possibility to contribute how the shall end. Do you want a happy ending? A tragic one? Something complete different? It is your chance to contribute to the story!
