Why Early Access?

“We set out to create an original game that would be challenging, fun, and will fill a certain niche among other multiplayer games. Namely, our goal was to fill the void of turn-based strategies within competitive multiplayer community. When talking about video game tournaments, competitions, and cyber-sports in general, we tend to think about highly dynamic and fast-paced games. Yet much slower-paced and hard to master games such as chess are nearly neglected when it comes to competitive cyber-sports. With Chessboard Kingdoms our goal is to change that once and for all.

Making this come true is obviously a difficult and lengthy process, but also it is impossible without feedback from the gaming community around the world. Realizing this grand idea requires people playing the game, suggesting how they want to see it, helping shape the perfect game that will, hopefully, one day take its place on the competitive scene. Early Access is a great place to start this demanding yet exciting journey.

Furthermore, our experience in Early Access will help us determine the general feasibility of adapting the game to other platforms.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect something like a year in Early Access if the game is received well enough. However, funding the development is an open question and it might directly affect the lenght of Early Access both ways. For example, if we find ourselves in a super tight situation, we might even consider releasing the game much sooner. On the other hand, if everything goes super well, we might do a full release sooner as well, only with even more features.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Aside from having a wider variety of visual features, such as types of terrain, obstacles, character/building sets, and general graphical tweaks, our vision for the game includes a larger diversity of game modes, unit types, and abilities. More sophisticated interaction with the game world, completely reworked sound and music are also important things that are currently lacking. Multiplayer experience and ranked play are also not yet realized to their full extent, which we are hoping to change over the course of development. Gameplay is subject to serious rebalance, such that it would meet our and players’ expectations and will provide unique and fun experiences.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Base game is fully playable on a small number of maps. We have the very basic game modes implemented, two sets of characters and buildings, and a few different terrain biomes. Multiplayer is implemented and allows creating and playing matches, although the players have to either create or join lobbies, as there is no quickplay at the moment. Map editor is available separately and allows players to create custom maps.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Our original intent was to have the game available in free-to-play format with paid downloadable content and in-app purchases, or perhaps some optional subscriptions. That is what we would want to see happening after Early Access, although we aren't entirely sure which way we are going to take it. During the Early Access we intend to sell the game at a small fixed price, which should help us funding future development and prepare for full release. We might change our approach depending on how viable this pricing strategy proves to be.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“To begin with, we want to consider all player feedback about the existing and upcoming features, as we add new content to the game. Shaping the final game will take user experiences into account, guided by our design strategy, which will also be corrected based on how the game will actually play.

In addition, and since this is a big part of our ultimate goal, we want to organize small tournaments among the Community. This will not only give us more realistic feedback, but will prepare the game and the team for the bigger tournaments that we want to host in the future.”

Chessboard Kingdoms Released (Early Access)

Release decisions

We are happy to present you the full version of the game finally available to all. Many options of how to proceed with releasing Chessboard Kingdoms have crossed our minds, and we opted to go with an Early Access version. Although the game is fully playable, there is yet much to be done if we want to keep it close to the grandeur of the original design. Early Access is here to help us determine how far we can take it and how players will respond to what the game offers right now. Our second big decision is the pricing. Even though we would like to have the game free-to-play with paid downloadable content and user-created items, after nearly two years in development we realize that we simply don't yet have the resources to rely on a free-to-play model, which would not be keeping us afloat for a long time.


For this release we prepared a lot of fixes directly based on the recent beta test feedback. There are still a ton of things we should be fixing and the suggestions we had from all who have tried the game before are excellent. Our big desire was to finally make the game available for more people to try, so we had to pause somewhere. Early Access is the way to go, as it should allow us to continue receiving feedback and tweaking the game accordingly, as well as adding new features.

Map Editor

As an important bonus, we released the Map Editor as a DLC. It is a free app that will give you the chance to make your own maps and share them through Steam Workshop (or by sending them out however you like). Needless to say, as long as you and your friends have the map you made, you all can play it together in multiplayer.

In the end...

Chessboard Kingdoms is a new kind of turn-based strategy. Ideas both new and old are fused together to create a game where principles of chess are expanded and developed to form novel, fun, and competitive multiplayer gaming activities. Devise and apply clever strategies, build and siege fortresses, encounter wizardry, and travel the lands of Chessboard Kingdoms!

Iron-clad West or Mysterious East? Find out who will persevere on the battlefield when two different factions fight for the grand victory. Will you be the wise Sultan proving your birthright to the borderland kingdoms, or the cunning King searching to expand his estate for the sake of his people?

Iconic “Capture the Flag” game mode mixed with turn-based combat can surely surprise you. Settle a bet between rulers by capturing and holding the flag instead of waging war. All in turn-based entourage, spiced up by familiar, yet new, chess mechanics.

    ● Sharpen your mind with chess strategies and tactics. Put your skills to the test on different board sizes and with different combinations of troops. Choose to use the familiar chess-like pieces, or explore the unique additions.

    ● Stationary ‘chess’ pieces? More like Barracks, Wizard Towers, Workshops, Walls and many more. Build and protect your town, and don’t underestimate the safety your walls bring.

    ● Enemy is sitting behind those tall Walls and Gates? Launch a catapult or trebuchet assault and bring down the fortress. Not only effective, but it’s fun to watch those pesky walls crumble.

    ● Enchant enemies or blast them with spells. Our Wizard unit works around the familiar rules. When an enemy piece is standing in his area of effect, its movement and attack paths change. You’ll have to adapt your strategy accordingly.

    ● Play with up to 4 other players on a variety of maps. Try to grasp the victory and achieve a high score. Gameplay takes on a whole new perspective when there’s more than two players involved.

    ● 'Capture the Flag' in multiplayer. Join your friends in this popular game mode. Utilize chess tactics and show you problem solving skills when trying to get a hold of that flag.
