Farragnarok's first land, LOHAE is a peaceful tree growing idle game, at first. Most of the game happens underground, and it can take players hours to realize that while they have been growing trees on the surface, something sinister is happening in the roots.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“FarragoFiction has maintained two years of a process of providing small, concrete updates through our free browser based games. This process allows fans to help shape our products, provide feedback, as well as keeping us focused on our goals.

Now we’re ready to bring that same proven process to Steam, which requires having the game available and playable as we develop it.

Farragnarok is a game about a mysterious, definitely unnamed game that 8 friends play together. Each player finds themselves transported to a new Land, complete with tiny talking animal npcs, tailored specifically to their personality and role in the coming events. The Players start out focusing on their own goals and Land Quests, but slowly realize how important team work is to beating the true objective of this game.

The First Player, who the NPCs refer to as “The Life Reaper” or the “Prince”, finds herself in the Land of Horticulture and Essence, filled with cliffs and plains, completely barren of trees, with bright purple talking beavers who claim they deforested the Land to prevent a great calamity caused by the Titan of this Land. The Life Reaper is tasked with bringing trees back, while also dealing with whatever consequences that might bring. This land was completed in a month of full time work, and represents the intended scale of each subsequent land: Small, Focused Games intended to explore a specific theme.

While Player interaction is intentionally limited at the start of the game, the “Paldemic” chat client simulation is included to review interactions between the Life Reaper (using the chat handle ‘yggdrasilsYeoman’) and her friends. For now, she’s only chosen to message the Player of the next land, who uses the chat handle pompousPyscho.

This next Player (called the Nowhere Guide or Null Guide) finds themselves on the Land of Mists and Trails, the included Demo in our initial release. This land is about 30% done, with travel between lands, a hunting system, a Dialogue Engine and large amounts of foundation work completed. Its intended for the graphical assets to expand to around 8 separate full towns which can be mixed and matched as needed, as well as 17 designed NPCs.

The Core gameplay loop of this land is intended to mirror the retro game “Oregon Trail”, with the Player recruiting “ghost” NPCs (small birds hidden under bedsheets) and taking them to specific destinations (their final “resting place”). The Titan has complicated this by causing all directions to become meaningless and eventually the Guide must make a Decision on how to confront them. Its intended for additional “Paldemic” chat conversations to become available with the full release of this land, and with each subsequent land.

Past this point we’re keeping our plans loose and flexible, providing our fandom with room to make suggestions or give feedback on existing mechanics, just as they have been with the first two Lands.

Current Plans are:

A Land for a Skald of Relevance to weave stories to influence the opinions of their colorful animal NPCs until they are ready to defeat the Titan themselves. This land will use a smaller version of our popular procedural story engine.

A Land for a Creation Servant to breed small animals in order for them to serve Civil Servant roles in a miniature town, with their Ultimate Goal being the creation of something worthy of being called Mayor. This Mayor will be revealed to be key to the overall function of the set of Lands, and the decisions made while breeding it will be Vital to the success of the Players.

A Land for a Blight Witch, in which their Pigeon npcs will ask for potions that can prevent their dishonorable fates as told by prophecy. Brewing potions is intended to be the core game mechanic.

A Land for a Bond Page, in which they must restore their own memories of their friends (the other Players) in order to realize the importance of teamwork. Their memories will be replaced with memories of mysterious strange aliens (those we wish to give Credit to for helping us with this game).

A land for a Clockwork Thief, using classic tower defense mechanisms to steal time from wave after waves of enemies sent by the Titan to harass their Horse npcs.

A Land for a Reality Grace to break the rules of the overarching game and DEMAND that those responsible for it fix everything that has been happening and hasn’t stopped happening since all the Players entered the Game.

Each Land is planned to be approximately as complex as the Land of Horticulture and Essence, meaning the full game will require about 8 months of full time work (or 3 or 4 times that of part time).

The overarching Plot will develop each land, adding layers of intrigue and riddle until the Players are divided against each other, with two main teams racing to finish the Game for their own purposes.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Each Land is expected to take two weeks to one month of full time work to complete, or three to eight months of part time work. Early Access is expected to remain until at least December, 2020.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Farragnarok will have 8 lands and various mechanics to tie them together.

The game mechanics for the remaining planned lands include a tower defense game, a city builder, a word puzzle game, a 'walking simulator', text adventures, and more.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The first Land, the Land of Horticulture and Essence( a Tree Growing Simulator with Definitely No Secrets) is fully complete, as well as a demo of the second, the Land of Mist and Trails, a game in which you ferry Lost Souls around an icy, ever shifting world.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“It is expected for the price to gradually raise as each mini game is released.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The Discord server, https://discord.gg/KPunMPc is intended to be the primary point of contact for community brainstorming, feedback, feature requests, and bug reports.”

About This Game

Farragnarok is a mysterious set of lands, starting with the Land of Horticulture and Essence (LOHAE). LOHAE is a peaceful tree growing simulation game with definitely no secrets. Taking on the mythological role of a Reaper of Life, you must Choose whether to destroy life, or to destroy using the power of life.

You can also enjoy the demo of the Land of Mists and Trails, an "Oregon Trail" like game where you ferry the souls of the dead to their final resting place.

Future lands will include features such as: a tower defender, a word puzzle, a procedural story generator, a walking simulator, and a city building game. All will be woven together by a thread of narrative significance, sometimes subtle, gradually growing more and more relevant.

Don't worry about that "essence" bullsh**t. Who even cares about it? Not smart Players like you. The Sleeping Serpent? Never heard of 'em. Must not have made it into this version of the game. You found a flashlight? Weird. Probably doesn't do anything.
