“Beacon already has much of the core features and content implemented, but hearing from more perspectives will help us make important decisions on what needs to be improved and help us determine what our playerbase wants most from the game as we implement the final content and features. Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan for Beacon to be in early access for 6-10 months with the final release in late 2019. Content expansions will be released every 4-6 weeks during EA development with minor updates and quality of life fixes in between these larger updates. How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Our Steam Early Access development period will focus mostly on fleshing out Act 2 of the game and of course tweaking the game and testing new features based on community suggestions! Below is a list of some of our planned additions.

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Collecting community feedback is one of the core reasons we decided to release to Steam Early Access. We’ll be checking our Steam community and other channels for feedback constantly, so don’t hesitate to give feedback. Below are a few of the main ways the community can engage us and help the game improve!

Suggestions: Although we’ve got a solid roadmap for where to take the game from here, any suggestions from the community will influence the future of the game. If you’ve got a suggestion on how to improve something or a feature you’d like to see added eventually be sure to share it!

Balance: Let us know if the game is too easy or too hard for you! Eventually we’d like to add difficulty scaling and any feedback will help influence how it will change the game. Remember we want you to die often though so you have a chance to use all that freshly collected DNA.

Bugs: There’s only so much time we can play the game ourselves, and without a dedicated testing team sometimes things slip through into an update. Let us know if you find any bugs or visual issues and we’ll make an effort to clean them up as soon as possible!”

Beacon Patch 2.02

Patch 2.02 contains our first set of improvements for controllers and handful of other tweaks and fixes! The main additions include an Aim Lock that holds the cursor on an enemy when Left Trigger is held, as well as the ability to rebind controller buttons. If you’re a controller player try out the new aim locking and let us know how you like it. We’re open to exploring more options for controller aiming as well if the aim lock still doesn't feel quite right, but in our initial tests it's been a much better play experience.

  • Added the ability to aim-lock on targets by holding Left Trigger
  • Right Joystick Click cycles between targets while aim locking
  • Grenade moved to Up D-Pad (Used to be left trigger)
  • Map moved to Right D-Pad (Used to be Down D-Pad)

Beacon Patch 2.01

Thanks to everyone for their support following the launch into Early Access! We’ve got a small updated released that should (hopefully) fix the Continue freeze many players were having as well as some other minor changes listed below. If you end up encountering the Continue freeze bug again please let us know on our Steam community or Discord!

  • Assault Rifle and Swift Arbiter (Variant) - Reduced max bullet damage
  • Medium Enemies - Increased max health of a handful of Medium tier enemies
  • Reduced positive stats in Paramount DNA from 3 to 2 to encourage use of more DNA mods and prevent UI error
  • Increased trigger radius on many health drops to make them easier to pick up
  • Added new DNA Research and Level Up sounds
  • Added DNA Mod Select and Place sounds
  • Added Mutation Roll and other Genome Sequencing sounds
  • Added Reconstitute tooltip popup sound
  • Added fire sound to Quill Bladder auxiliary item
  • Added map hint to level 01 start to hint checking map before entering the level
  • Made a few Act 1 jump puzzles easier to complete

About This Game

Beacon follows the journey of space privateer, Freja Akiyama, on her endless search for her crashed ship’s emergency distress beacon. In your search you’ll not only find weapons and items to help you; you’ll also be collecting DNA from the enemies you defeat. When you inevitably die, you’re given the opportunity to integrate the DNA you've collected into your genome, allowing you to alter your statistics and gain gameplay-altering physical mutations for your next clone's life.

In the search for the Beacon, new questions arise; just how many clones of Freja are there? How long has she been stuck in an infinite cycle of survival? How much of her humanity will be sacrificed before escaping?

DNA is the core of Beacon’s gameplay loop. Through the use of Freja’s state-of-the-art Clone Bay and DNA dropped by deceased enemies, upon death you’re given the opportunity to alter your genetic makeup, changing your statistics before a fresh clone is ‘printed’ back at the beginning of the game. Each faction has their own set of unique DNA and mutations, allowing you to become a battle-hardened mass of metal, a luminous abomination of insect flesh, or anything inbetween.

The planet you've crashed on is unfamiliar. The only information available is its name – Kovus-18 – as it flashes up on your Visorsys OS; the rest of the record is blank. It seems that either nothing is known about it, or whatever was known has been scrubbed from the database. Multiple factions populate its surface, each seemingly at war with the others, and all of them hostile to the planet's newest inhabitant… you.

In Beacon, you play as Freja Akiyama. Having grown up in the backwaters of civilised space, Freja always dreamed of adventure. Enrolling in the military at a young age, she quickly discovered both her natural abilities for combat and piloting spacecraft, and her inability to work within the strict regimen of the armed forces. Freja lives and works aboard her ship, the Ouroboros – a single-berth, heavily-modified light spacecraft that boasts state-of-the-art weaponry and facilities.
