What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Beacon already has much of the core features and content implemented, but hearing from more perspectives will help us make important decisions on what needs to be improved and help us determine what our playerbase wants most from the game as we implement the final content and features. Through engaging with our community and releasing steady updates we believe we can create the best version of Beacon together.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan for Beacon to be in early access for 6-10 months with the final release in late 2019. Content expansions will be released every 4-6 weeks during EA development with minor updates and quality of life fixes in between these larger updates. Check our news page to see the latest updates and additions!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Our Steam Early Access development period will focus mostly on fleshing out Act 2 of the game and of course tweaking the game and testing new features based on community suggestions! Below is a list of some of our planned additions.

  • Level 6
  • New Enemies, Items, and Mutations
  • Boss Mutations
  • New original music
  • Daily Runs and Challenges
  • Difficulty Options
  • Improved controller support
  • Performance Improvements

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Much of the core game is completed in the current build after our latest period of First Access development. Act 1 of the game is near completion offering enough randomization to give a new challenge every clone life. Below is a quick list of the content currently included.

  • Levels 1-5
  • 35+ Enemies spread over 4 Factions
  • 3 Act 1 Boss Fights
  • 100+ Items
  • 60+ Weapons
  • 70+ Mutations

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We don’t plan to change the price of Beacon during our Early Access development, but with the release of the final version and the addition of content afterwards there might be a slight increase.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Collecting community feedback is one of the core reasons we decided to release to Steam Early Access. We’ll be checking our Steam community and other channels for feedback constantly, so don’t hesitate to give feedback. Below are a few of the main ways the community can engage us and help the game improve!

Suggestions: Although we’ve got a solid roadmap for where to take the game from here, any suggestions from the community will influence the future of the game. If you’ve got a suggestion on how to improve something or a feature you’d like to see added eventually be sure to share it!

Balance: Let us know if the game is too easy or too hard for you! Eventually we’d like to add difficulty scaling and any feedback will help influence how it will change the game. Remember we want you to die often though so you have a chance to use all that freshly collected DNA.

Bugs: There’s only so much time we can play the game ourselves, and without a dedicated testing team sometimes things slip through into an update. Let us know if you find any bugs or visual issues and we’ll make an effort to clean them up as soon as possible!”

Beacon Patch 2.12

Patch 2.12 adjusts the cooldowns and balance of most Auxiliary items, making them more useful as consistent attacks. Further tweaks will be made if necessary to make Aux items more exciting to find and make use of, and in the upcoming 2.2 and 2.3 patches a handful of new Aux attack items will be added to make auxiliaries a bigger part of the combat system. New audio tweaks and optimizations have been made as well, giving large water forms and hydro areas a better ambient soundscape along with improving audio memory usage.

  • Weapons: Assault Rifle and Swift Arbiter - Increased max ammo count
  • Reduced many attack auxiliary items to a 20 second cooldown, and many utility auxiliary items to a 40 second cooldown
  • Pickups - Set all minor pickup buffs to have a 20 second duration, meaning an increase for most buff pickups and a nerf for a couple
  • Auxiliary: Barrage - Reduced damage and explosion range slightly
  • Auxiliary: Bonespike - Reduced damage (Will still one shot small and some medium enemies)
  • Auxiliary: Rebound Beam - Tweaked laser boomerang speed to make it fly further and be easier to double-hit enemies with
  • Auxiliary: Tesla Shield - Reduced shield drain rate, increased delay time before shield begins regenerating
  • Auxiliary: Nightshroud Bouncer- Lowered boost height
  • DNA: Aux Cooldown Skill Mod - Reduced to -5 seconds to work with new cooldown balance
  • DNA: Pickup Duration Skill Mod - Reduced to +5 seconds
  • Tweaked gravity and speed of vertical boost travel objects more (Let us know if you run into a rotspore or swamp bubble that boosts too high)
  • Improved Spider Drone enemy drop with more delay once in position and a shadow of the droid where it will land.
  • Added new audio system to merge nearby ambient sounds together, leaving less duplicate ambient sounds and allowing us to give areas more accurate ambient soundscapes
  • Added Weakness sound effect when an enemy is damaged by a damage type they are weak to
  • Updated waterfall sounds to have more powerful waterfall sounds around large water terrain
  • Converted all in-game music to mp3 to reduce memory usage greatly
  • Fixed a few broken nightshroud bouncer boosts discovered in 2.1 levels
  • Fixed Tritoraptor Crown mutation not giving speed buff for the right duration
  • Fixed Tesla Hologram MK3 not granting debuff when damaged by tesla damage

Beacon Patch 2.11

2.11 fixes some issues from build 2.1 and fixes an issue with Accuracy since a statistics update in a previous patch. We've started tweaking the player's gravity a bit more as well to make using boosts and falling a bit smoother, and will likely update it again in the next patch if there's any feedback on how this build feels.

  • New Level 4 Caps - Irradiated Tritoraptor Nests
  • New Level 4 Caps - Native Loot Cavern Entrances
  • Updated Act 1 Chilopod Intro tiles
  • Removed wall traps from Level 2 Spider Droid trap tile fights
  • Accuracy: Tweaked accuracy values on many weapons and reduced player base accuracy stat to make accuracy changes more noticeable (Was accidentally set to max so accuracy was never affected in game. Base accuracy on many weapons will be worse now, but accuracy items will be more effective)
  • Pickup: Focus Injector - Added new 2x Reload Speed buff while active (On top of accuracy increase)
  • Weapon: Flak Revolver and Crowd Pleaser - Increased max ammo, decreased damage, increased reload time, decreased fire rate (No longer semi-auto)
  • Weapon: Starborn Sniper - Increased max splinters when fully charged, decreased charge time, decreased base bullet damage, increased fire rate
  • Weapon: Tesla Rifle - Increased tesla bounce range, decreased shot damage loss per bounce, decreased base shot damage slightly
  • Tweaked player’s gravity during boosts/falls to make increase to max fall speed more gradual. This makes landing after boosting off of geysers and rotspores easier and will make some jumps more forgiving.
  • Added new Karnak sounds (Walking, drinking, and death)
  • Added new Chilopodrae movement and attack sounds
  • Optimized audio priorities and other audio properties on many objects
  • Various level fixes
  • Fixed level 4 not generating rarely since patch 2.1
  • Fixed Level 5 start elevator being sticky in the middle when walked over
  • Fixed rotspore needles spawned by Rotneedle Balloons not exploding after latching to player
  • Fixed duplicate explosives being created from reflect scripts
  • Fixed player death UI sounds not playing correctly often
  • Fixed missing materials on many item previews
  • Fixed debuffs applying to the player from their own explosives
  • Fixed Stockpile waypoints in pocket worlds appearing on maps and not disappearing when neared
  • Fixed Drop Pod warning sound not playing correctly

About This Game

Beacon follows the journey of space privateer, Freja Akiyama, on her endless search for her crashed ship’s emergency distress beacon. In your search you’ll not only find weapons and items to help you; you’ll also be collecting DNA from the enemies you defeat. When you inevitably die, you’re given the opportunity to integrate the DNA you've collected into your genome, allowing you to alter your statistics and gain gameplay-altering physical mutations for your next clone's life.

In the search for the Beacon, new questions arise; just how many clones of Freja are there? How long has she been stuck in an infinite cycle of survival? How much of her humanity will be sacrificed before escaping?

  • 5 Randomly Generated Levels -- Enter at the outer forest, fight your way through the tropical swamps, and push through the pollution to the cryptic Prism Vault where your Beacon is being held!
  • A rich multi-faction world to explore -- Discover the mysteries behind Kovus 18, find tinkered Weapon Variants left behind by previous clones, and track your secrets found percentage at the end of each level!
  • 6 Unique Weather Types with Storm Events -- Avoid or make use of Hailshards, Tesla Storms, and Polluted Tornadoes.
  • 125+ Items Spread Across 4 Item Types -- Regain an advantage with one time use Pickups, activate your re-useable auxiliary, swap your grenade mod, and stock up on passive mods!
  • 75+ Weapons -- Spread across 5 factions each with their own unique technologies.
  • 75+ Mutations -- Gain new abilities with each death and alter your character into something not quite human.
  • 35+ Enemies with 8 Champion Variants -- The varied factions that inhabit Kovus 18 will fight each other as well as you.
  • 3+ Boss Fights -- Including the Solus Hivemind and Excavation Spider!

DNA is the core of Beacon’s gameplay loop. Through the use of Freja’s state-of-the-art Clone Bay and DNA dropped by deceased enemies, upon death you’re given the opportunity to alter your genetic makeup, changing your statistics before a fresh clone is ‘printed’ back at the beginning of the game. Each faction has their own set of unique DNA and mutations, allowing you to become a battle-hardened mass of metal, a luminous abomination of insect flesh, or anything inbetween.

The planet you've crashed on is unfamiliar. The only information available is its name – Kovus-18 – as it flashes up on your Visorsys OS; the rest of the record is blank. It seems that either nothing is known about it, or whatever was known has been scrubbed from the database. Multiple factions populate its surface, each seemingly at war with the others, and all of them hostile to the planet's newest inhabitant… you.

In Beacon, you play as Freja Akiyama. Having grown up in the backwaters of civilised space, Freja always dreamed of adventure. Enrolling in the military at a young age, she quickly discovered both her natural abilities for combat and piloting spacecraft, and her inability to work within the strict regimen of the armed forces. Freja lives and works aboard her ship, the Ouroboros – a single-berth, heavily-modified light spacecraft that boasts state-of-the-art weaponry and facilities.
