What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We have plenty of ideas on where the game should be heading, but we imagine so do you. In stead of us deciding the path we would like the community to be actively involved in the development process. A lot is to be improved about the game in terms of gameplay, graphics and level design. We want to prioritize what we work on based on the feedback we get from our players.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect to be in early access for no longer then 12 months, depending on community involvement.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We would like to add destruction of ships. This combined with more offensive weaponry can add an extra layer of depth to the ship vs ship battles. We also want to add a progression system so players get rewarded for winning matches. We also considered larger crew ships and possibly increasing the ship count. We also thought about adding a treasure hunting mode or storyline, however this completely depends on what the community sees fit for the game.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Crooked waters has functioning online multiplayer, where two ships of four man crews can fight each other via matchmaking. The ships are steerable with adjustable sails. Players can transport items across the ship, using them for loading and firing the cannons. Players must communicate and work together in order to efficiently take down the enemy ship.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will most likely increase after leaving Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to have an open development process where the community can follow and give feedback to the features we are currently working on. We do so via different types of social media like our website, forums, youtube channel, twitter and occasional blog posts.”

Alpha 0.9.9f7 changelog

This week's update introduces our new water system. Visually it has improved a lot due to it's using realtime reflection now from the sky.
Technically it has improved as well since it gives us more flexibility on how the water should behave i.e. the waves are more realistic and we have more control on the wave height etc. We still want to improve a lot but we think it has become much better already.

Besides that we fixed more bugs and continue to do so.
As mentioned in previous updates, we are still working hard on our 1.0.0 release and are getting closer to a product that is ready to show to you guys.

[NEW] Implemented new water visuals.

[UPDATE] Make anchor releasing sound less loud.
[UPDATE] Improve ship collision behaviour.

[FIXED] Player spawns in the water when trying to spawn on player-island.
[FIXED] Cannon barrel fuse can be lighted by any part of the botefeux instead of only the fuse part.
[FIXED] Usernames are no longer visible when a player dies.
[FIXED] Crowsnest and top mast pole no longer has player collision on climb.

About This Game

Crooked Waters is a multiplayer virtual reality game where players immerse in thrilling sea fights. Together with your fellow pirates you'll try to survive the clash with other pirate ships.

Weigh the anchor! Load the cannons! Set sail!
The ship won't conquer the enemy on it's own, and it needs its crew. Are you a captain? A cannoneer? Or a mere Scallywag? There is no rank when you're in the heat of battle. Adjust the sails so you'll have the speed advantage, supply your cannoneers with ammo or chant some Yo Ho Ho! and Ye He He to keep the morale high. Sink those Scurvy Dogs when you get the chance, because there is no room for others in these Crooked Waters.
