What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Poly Universe began as a simple experiment in procedural planet generation. Since then it has grown into a fully playable strategy-simulation game about colonizing the universe. That growth was driven by people watching and playing early builds and saying "Sure that's great, but wouldn't be really cool if..."

Being on Early Access is a way for the game to continue to grow based on the ideas and suggestions of its players.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“At least a year. The game already contains a core set of features that make for interesting gameplay, but there are many, many more gameplay ideas that I'd still like to explore.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I'm quite happy with the low-poly art style of the game, so the full version of the game will look a lot like how it looks now. The gameplay, however, will gain much more depth. Future versions of the game may have more complex models for the health, education, and happiness of your citizens. Diseases and natural disasters could be added. Research and technology trees could be added. Diplomacy might show up as well, making it possible to encounter alien species who want to do more than just kill you on sight. =)

What features are added will ultimately be determined by what the game's players are most interested in seeing.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current build is a fully playable simulation game, where the player is able to take a band of a dozen stranded colonists and build empires that extend across dozens of planets. Completing a game (that is: starting a new game and expanding your colony until you've covered the entire galactic map) should take 5 to 10 hours.

I prioritize fixing bugs, and I'm able to play through the game in its current state without encountering any. Still, bugs are bound to exist, especially as new features are added. If you do find one, please email me your save file and a description of what went wrong!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The current price of the game is low compared to what I think the final price will be. As new features are added the price might increase, but it won't go higher than what I consider to be the 'normal' price for a simulation/strategy game.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Comments from the community will determine which new game features are focused on. Suggestions (and even scorching criticism) is always welcome!”

About This Game

A tiny band of settlers land on a remote planet. With you as their leader they will either build a new civilization, or be consumed by the foul creatures which inhabit the furthest reaches of space.

In Poly Universe worlds are tiny but numerous. Be strategic in laying out your cities to maximize the limited space available on each world. Balance industry and residential buildings to keep your citizens happy. But don't neglect the defenses necessary to keep them safe! Here in the outer edge of the known universe, danger can arrive at any moment, and when it does it arrives in full force.

Establishing trade routes between worlds will allow your planets to specialize and share resources, pushing the boundaries of your civilization even further outwards. But always keep an eye on the health, happiness, and education of your citizens -- with nowhere to receive reinforcements from, your citizens are ultimately your most valuable resource.
