What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We have decided to take advantage of Steam's Early Access to allow a better experience for the player. Using Early Access, we hope to gain feedback from the community about their feelings of the story and we want to shape the game and the story to be a more complete experience. With the amount of depth we have planned for this project, we want our fans to weigh in on their opinions of content. The community can weigh in on dialogue and characters in the game and the input of the community makes for a story and experience that everyone can enjoy. We also want to use this opportunity to allow the player to make their own journey and story in Yoltrund. Play the way that you want to play and make your own story.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect the game to be finished by early fall 2018. Else, we will delay until early 2019 to ensure that the game is complete.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version will be done step by step. We plan to release a scene of Yoltrund, allow the community to review the scene, and then we adjust the scene according to community feedback. We will aim not to release a scene in the game and it not be complete. This includes features. All of the game's base features have been added and the game is now needing content so the game will have everything the player needs.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game currently has all of the features advertised and has everything the player needs to begin enjoying. From here, the only thing to be added is the content and the different scenes of the game as well as some community feedback as to the direction of the game.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The Early Access version comes with an early adopters discount, discounted from the original price. Once the game is finished and fully launched, we will remove the discount and the game sold for its suggested retail price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will maintain forums and boards to watch the community and as we create the game in steps, we will check our progress and steps with the community. We will release one scene of the game at a time and once we add a scene, we will monitor the community and weigh feedback of the scene. We will then adjust the scene according to what the community prefers. We will also use the community to build characters in the game as well as dialogue for those characters or others. Players may also have their input weighed on the story and the story may be tweaked accordingly.

A scene will include the level maze itself, and all dialogue, sequences, actions, puzzles, etc.

For example, we will launch "Kurldehv", which is the scene of the player entering the depths of Yoltrund and the first torment. We will release the scene completed to the best of our ability and the community will play through the scene and then provide feedback. This could be that a character needs a different dialogue sequence, a bug occured, or that the level maze wasn't quite right. We will then adjust the scene accordingly and rerelease and move to the next scene.

Once we're finished reviewing a scene, we will put up topics to monitor the community and ask things like "make a character" or "what would this character sound like?".”

Update - Is Yoltrund dead? (Short answer, no)

We know what is on everyone's mind. "Yoltrund was to be in early access for a year or less. The game came out in 2017 though and it's still not finished! What happened?"

This post will explain in detail what has been happening over the past year. But to answer the question beforehand; Yoltrund was essentially put on hold for a brief amount of time, but weeks turned into months and into a year due to a lot of issues.

So, let's go down a list to explain what happened

  • The Hohenheim & Diaghaltas update was to be a big update; adding a new mechanic to the game (like how Hekehldahr did) and setting up a huge plot point. The problem was that this update was actually too large and caused more harm than good. We had to redo the update several times since the game was not designed for this scope of work from the start. This started from my bad production skills and not realising just how bad for the game this update could be on the backend. So we had to delay until we could get it working and time continued to go on.

  • New projects started to come to light. I know how it looks; we start a poll on what game you would like us to work on next and then seemingly abandon Yoltrund, possibly for something newer and shiny. Granted, we did divert resources to a newer RPG, but in light of it, it won't succeed without Yoltrund's success. And since there's still years of work for that RPG before it's finished, we can take a step back to try and finish Yoltrund.

  • In light of recent problems with Valve, we've been unable to push updates that we've been wanting to. Essentially, Steam had given us problem after problem (hence the hiatus of the game Negative Type). However, most of those problems have been resolved and we will resume work as soon as possible.

  • Dev Ops encountered several issues. Essentially, the game sometimes wouldn't work in various situations, hence why there is still no Linux build of the game. We wanted to get the Linux build done before the next update and that became nothing but backlogs.

So, what are we going to do in order to fix this problem? Well, we have resolved most issues with the game that prevented us from moving on. We will also be working on cleaning up the game in the coming week to make it run more efficiently before we add this update. If we can get this update working without a hitch, then it should be smooth sailing. At this point, the update is somewhat functional and we're just trying to get it working more smoothly. We also have a new artist on the team who will be helping make the game pretty, especially with big character appearances coming up next.

We have no date for the next update still, but we are estimating mid March, maybe early April at the latest. We will also be toning back a lot of features in order to make this happen. We also have some bugs to squash (the infamous infinite sprint).

Which reminds me; the infinite sprint is actually not a bug, but a left over piece of dev cheats we used to navigate the map. It was a great idea at the time, but we can't find a way to turn it off, which is why it remains. Likely, when we add controller support, it will finally go away (hopefully).

And that should explain in detail what is going on. Expect more updates soon and I myself am personally sorry for leading on this hiatus without any updates. I would expect better of any other developer and should expect better from myself.

Lead Developer.

“In the game, we are met by graphics that immediately gives us nostalgia. A simple game with a good story. The most impressive thing about the game is the music and sound effects that accompany it”
Games without Borders

“The music was a nice fit to set the feel of the game, the sound effects were well done, and the graphics bring back nostalgia in the best way...I look forward to playing more of it as it's released and I think for the price, you really can't go wrong with showing support for Templarius Studios.”
Crankage Games

“I'm really intrigued...I'm really excited to see where this is going to go.”

About This Game

Templarius Games Studios is proud to present a tale from Michael Cox.

This game is in Early Access and is under active development. Not all levels have been added and all planned content will be added by final release.

Yoltrund: The World of Eternal Woe, a short story written in 2014 by Michael Cox, now takes flesh as Yoltrund. Using unique lore and characters, this tale is told.

Long before, there were Two, two brothers of The Ones Who Came Before; one of Light, one of Shadow. These brothers collided to form a third; one of Flame. The One King, burning with anger and hatred, created the Void that lives in all things; the barrier between realms to prevent his elder brothers from fighting further.

He then succumbed to Sin, causing his eternal fires to rage onward in beautiful shadow. In doing so, he created his realm of Yoltrund, where he punishes such sinners with purifying flame.

He then vanished, never to be seen again.

Experience the gripping tale as you play as a lost soul, trapped within Yoltrund, and must find his way out of the realm of eternal fire. However, to do so, he must travel deeper into this dark world and must survive the mazes within to prevent himself from being corrupted beyond saving.

  • Unique and incredibly deep story and characters based on almost a decade's worth of lore from the unique Kaiyumian lore base. And with seeds planted in Yoltrund for future instances, your mind will race to solve the mysteries of Yoltrund for them to be revealed in time!
  • Yoltrund uses a Diary which details your journey through Yoltrund, from the places seen to interactions with characters, all using original quotes from the original story!
  • Yoltrund uses a unique 2D-3D style, using 2D pixel art, but with 3D effects and sequences. This style brings depth and beauty to each level.
  • Hand-crafted art and sound effects to make each region of Yoltrund unique and deep.
  • Yoltrund is designed with the perspective of old day RPG's; no frequent patching and no DLC's to allow for a complete and enjoyable experience at launch.

Experience the unique tale of Yoltrund, coming soon!
