Why Early Access?

“It Lurks Below is a fun new one-man indie game project from myself, David Brevik, the creator of Diablo and Diablo II. Although the game is already engaging and addictive, I want to use Early Access to make the project even better. I’m a big believer in actively communicating with your community, getting feedback and improving the final product. This has already been going on in a small closed beta, but I’m ready to open it up and make the best possible game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I estimate that the game will be fully released later in 2018. I have been working on the project for about a year and 4 months so far, and though progress is rapid, I still have content I feel needs to be in the game and polished for release.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The focus of development during Early Access will be on finishing the content for the game. Although there are hours and hours of content, I still want to add more skill items, new bosses, new recipes, new runewords, more unique items and many other changes to get to the final version. Most importantly though, I would love to hear from the community. What do they really wish was in the game? With the beta I have been running, there has been quite a bit of constructive feedback which has resulted in changes and new content for the game.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is full featured. There are many hours of compelling gameplay with many skills, builds, classes, and items. What the game lacks is some of the end content. About two-thirds of the world is complete.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. Early Access supporters will receive a lower price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Working with the community is a vital part of the way I create games. This has been true with this project and other projects I’ve worked on in the last 10 years. During the closed beta I have been in constant communication with the supporters and patches have been frequent.

There will be updates every few weeks and detailed notes about what is being worked on and what has been put into the updates.”

Patch notes for EAv0.7.21a

- I changed the damage on the dash digging to scale with your player level. There were some reports of deep-down digging being a problem.
- I changed the way the dash calculates your final position. You should be able to dash into smaller spaces now.
- Added a combat-style description string when starting a character so you can tell if it is ranged or melee
- Changed the recipe reveal tip from "Improved wand and iron armor" to "Improved weapon and iron armor"
- Many missile sounds were not being changed due to position in the world, but now are. This should help with Surface Eye (Seeker) bombs.
- Intelligence shrines have been changed to give you Grit if you are melee

- Fixed a bug where if you dashed right next to you, the dash particles would never end. Though it looked cool, it was not the intent.
- Fixed a terrible bug where you would lose your arms while switching items mid-swing. You couldn't get them back until you died.
- You could dash into the ground. Though I saw it done a million times, I had a tough time repeating it. I put in a fix. We will see.

Patch notes for EAv0.7.20a

- Warrior has been unlocked! Dash and slay your way to fun!
- I changed the way percentage regeneration works in the game. Instead of just being 1%, it can be any percent and it can stack.
- Endless Elixir got the health regeneration increased from 1% to 5%
- The Golden Goblet also got increased from 1% to 5%
- I put the changes to regeneration in that inventory stats window. It now displays HPs/sec and percent HP/sec.
- I changed the audio engine to only play 1 "copy" of a sound in a given frame. This should stop the sounds bursting to really loud.
- I reduced the damage on the Imp Riders, but I'm not sure if they were really doing too much damage. It looked okay to me, but reports were different.
- Ring of Critical Protection has been reduced from 5 seconds to 3 seconds of immunity
- The Holy Vial grants you 3 seconds of immunity when it triggers

- Elemental damage increases were not working for swords/melee. It will now be working and show properly in the stats window.

About This Game

It Lurks Below is a retro-styled, 2D, action-oriented, survival RPG by David Brevik. Create a custom character and choose from several different classes to delve deep into the mysteries of what evil lurks below. Dig down and explore the randomly generated levels, find random items, and combat deadly monsters to get the answers.

Though this game looks similar to other games in the genre, it plays very differently. It is a true RPG, with many stats and character classes. It is very reminiscent of other games made by David Brevik such as Diablo, Diablo II, Hellgate: London and Marvel Heroes. With six character classes to choose from, randomly generated levels, random stats on items, secret areas, bosses, a survival talent tree and three different play modes, it delivers on a very different and unique gaming experience.
