Why Early Access?

“We have a long history of doing post-launch content updates for our games based on player feedback. Early Access will let us get this feedback earlier in the process. For Wayward Souls, we're going to mostly use it to finish our final end-game character, the Paladin, before we launch the game. At the same time we're also going to beef up our Endless Mode and put in some additional features.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Approximately 3-7 months, depending on problems we run into and things we decide to add. After the launch from Early Access, we will also be releasing additional content as free updates.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We will be providing a public task list so that you can see what we're planning for the full version, and what we're working on right now. You can find it here or on a pinned post on the Discussion board: https://trello.com/b/Owzi4W1j/wayward-souls-early-access-planning

A summary of what we are planning for the full version is below:

  • Polished and complete final Paladin class
  • Endless Mode revamps, including gold sink Altars

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Six out of seven of the character classes in, everyone except Paladin, with their complete stories, equipment, upgrades, and abilities. Over 100 monster types, we sometimes add more. Over 300 hats. All the game modes are in, though we plan on revamping Endless Dungeon Mode to have more features. Paladin will be up and running at start of Early Access with all his abilities, but his abilities will be tweaked for balance purposes and his story's bosses may change during our work.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We will gradually raise the price during Early Access major milestones, with a final price raise at the end of Early Access.”

2/15 Update - Paladin Bosses Part 4

Paladin's story mode is now compete, with a new boss added. We will likely tweak him after some feedback, but this should be the last boss-focused update. Next up: Remaining features and fixes before 1.0 launch!

List of Changes

- Paladin's final boss is now in the game
- Paladin ending can now be reached
- Paladin's story mode now has 21 floors

- Gallus Prologue boss now revamped
- Paladin's fountains now heal for slightly less, 6 and 3 for mini-fountains instead of 8 and 4. We plan to tweak this by having his fountains also give ammo for his abilities
- New fountain appearance for Paladin
- Paladin fountains now emit an attack that damages and stuns enemies

- Room tweaks

- Blythe, Gallus boss', and Paladin boss' sword now has 10% less range and arc width.

2/2 Update - Paladin Bosses Part 3

Paladin's story mode has been lengthened by a few levels, and he now has a new boss! This also contains some other features, such as new item icons, being able to go back a page in books, and tweaks to previous bosses.

List of Changes

New Paladin Mode Changes

- Paladin Story Mode extended to 18 levels, from 15
- New boss added. Looking for feedback on him, may tweak him to be more difficult

Paladin Boss Tweaks

- C's acid rune now works properly
- A ranged ability normalized to the other bosses' ranged speed
- Shorter cooldowns for R's poison cloud, A's lantern and ranged attack, C's shadow and acid, S's fireball and lightning,
- Shorter warmups and cooldowns for the charge attacks of A and S
- S's thinking slowdown removed


- You can now close multiple page books with Z, and go backwards and forwards in pages with the left and right arrows. C still goes forward a page
- Items have new, bigger icons in the pause menu
- Room tweaks, including Arena's Library section having less bookcases in fighting areas
- Some new tech things to support the new boss

About This Game

Wayward Souls is a randomly generated action-RPG with a heavy focus on story. Play as seven different heroes, all with their own abilities and playstyles. Fight through steadily greater hordes of enemies, as you learn about each character and find out what happened in the cursed tower you find yourself in.

Greatly inspired by 90's era action-RPG's, but with a faster pace and a focus on randomized replay value.

  • Customize each character with their own upgrades and equipment sets that change their movesets and abilities.
  • Over 100 different monster types. Over 300 hats (IMPORTANT)
  • Unique story events for every playable character.
  • Many different areas, room types, rare rooms, encounters, and secrets.
  • Unlockable game modes, including Endless Mode.
  • Heavy replay value due to randomly generated levels, multiple character types, and randomized enemy groups.

Hero Characters and Abilities

Renee uses her mobility to dash through enemies. Her Power Attack is a kick that stuns, with effects depending on her boots. She frequently finds items that let her blind, stun, or poison enemies. All of these let her perform very damaging backstabs.

Equipment and Upgrade Examples:
  • Mirage Dagger randomly gives her short bursts of stealth during her dashes.
  • Giantstomper Boots upgrade her kicks to send enemies flying far back. Flung enemies will then damage and stun enemies they crash into. The Giantstompers also interrupt larger enemies that are stun resistant.
  • Toadskin Cowters poison enemies that hit her, stunning them after a few seconds.
  • Her Low Blow Upgrade permanently makes it so defeating large enemies will make her next dagger attack stun whatever she hits, even if her slash hits multiple enemies.

Blythe combines durability with a big sword that cleaves a wide area. He has a shield to block enemy attacks, and throwing axes for when he needs a faster or more long ranged option than his sword provides.

  • Duskhander Sword replaces his default Power Attack's charging slash with a whirlwind spin, hitting enemies over a larger area.
  • Magebane Gauntlets reduces the damage of enemy spells, while making his throwing axes destroy any enemy spell they pass through.
  • Stonebeard Slab is much more durable than the default shield, but makes him move very slowly when holding the shield out to block.
  • Drakefire Oil is an item the Warrior can use to make all his sword swings emit a traveling wave of flame, for a limited time.

Abbie has long ranged magic attacks that do heavy damage. Her Power Attack uses her staff for shots that are longer range and pierce multiple enemies. In a tough situation, she has limited use spells for both offense and defense.

  • Salamander's Breath Staff turns her magical shots into bursts of flame that pierce even more enemies, but have very short range.
  • Tremor Garb gives her a powerful footstomp that creates a shockwave to stun enemies and destroy enemy projectiles.
  • Manablade Arts lets her summon a sword that does high damage, interrupts enemy attacks, can reflect enemy spells, and has a small chance to stun.
  • The Mage can find powerful one use scrolls such as Fireball or Lightning Bolt, which inflict massive damage and stun to multiple enemies.
