What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“To receive and implement player feedback so that IronWolf VR can be both compelling and intuitive. It is important to us that we develop submarine systems and enemies that are complex enough to provide interesting gameplay while being simple to learn.

We have created some missions to demonstrate and test different gameplay elements, with the intention of putting them together in a persistent open world.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect full release to occur in 2019.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Throughout early access we will be carefully analysing player feedback which will guide how gameplay systems in IronWolf VR evolve. Our aim is to achieve an intuitive and engaging system for controlling the submarine that takes full advantage of roomscale VR.

Our vision for IronWolf VR is that players will be able to patrol the oceans and be provided with a seamless persistent open world, with interesting and varied gameplay being presenting as they sail the ocean. In this open world players will be able to enlist the help of friends to man their submarine. To achieve this we will be adding:

Gameplay features:

  • Large naval battles
  • Aircraft carriers
  • Battleships
  • Airships
  • Escort mission
  • Blockades
  • Inventory system

Submarine Systems:

  • Damage Control: Players repair their submarine through physically interacting with the submarine.
  • Torpedo room
  • Engine room
  • Additional deck gun

Environment:
  • Strategic sea forts
  • Icebergs
  • Underwater terrain
  • Night missions

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“In the initial release of IronWolf VR we have included a set of mission that will enable players to:

  • Sink enemy ships with torpedoes
  • Fight enemy aircraft using the anti-aircraft gun
  • Duels with destroyers that will engage you with depth charges
  • Navigate around anti-submarine mines
  • Experience drowning when the enemy inflicts too much damage on your submarine
  • Medals awarded based on mission performance
  • A variety of difficulty levels

These missions provide a starting point for us to get player feedback before introducing new missions and gameplay mechanics. In the future, these missions will provide the basis of an open world gameplay experience.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We will announce pricing for the final launch of IronWolf VR later, as we are still reviewing if it will be the same price as Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are excited for the community to start playing IronWolf VR and giving us their feedback. We are looking to release updates on a regular basis and we will be acting on community feedback, both for guiding new features and balancing the game.”

IronWolf Open World Roadmap with new vehicles and PvP

IronWolf VR has come a long way since we released into early access over a year ago. We’re now embarking on developing the persistent open world elements of the game. This has led to some fundamental questions regarding the finished version of IronWolf VR.

Having spent the last few months listening to community feedback and undertaking R+D, we are now able to share a vision for the game that we’re very excited about.

Here is a high-level roadmap of what’s planned
  1. A persistent open world that you’ll be able to roam with your submarine to battle new varied enemies and protect allied convoys. Rewards for completing engagements will allow you to upgrade your submarine.

  2. Multiple player controlled submarines roaming a shared open world, where players can roam the map alone or team up with allied players to take on harder enemies. Submarines from opposing factions will battle to influence the outcome of large naval battles in experimental PvP.

  3. Co-op/single player controlled destroyer that opens up new gameplay opportunities and asymmetric PvP with submarines vs destroyers.

  4. Co-op/single player controlled bomber aircraft to assist your allies in naval battles, hunt down high-value targets and engage in PvP with submarines and destroyers.

We’ll be updating our Trello roadmap in due course to reflect these changes and releasing more details as we progress through each milestone.

The next release will include a submarine pen and a brand new UI system, which will be the foundation for many of the open world systems. Here’s a work in progress preview of the submarine pen.

Early Access 1.7.0.6: Performance improvements and settings

We’ve just pushed 1.7.0.6 which contains various optimisations to improve graphics and CPU performance in the game. Additionally, we’re beginning the process of adding performance options with a toggle for exterior shadows, located in the Performance Settings menu on the S.I.D.

Change log:

  • Significantly reduced draw calls inside the submarine.
  • Decreased texture memory usage inside the submarine.
  • Optimised water performance.
  • Added exterior shadows toggle to S.I.D.
  • Swapped lobby controller models to hands for easier left/right identification.
  • Added room scale setting explanation in settings.
  • No longer return the 88mm shell to the dispenser when using standing locomotion controls.
