What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Brick Brock already has a playable run from the harbour through four floors and their guardians. We are using Early Access to refine combat and weapon balance, difficulty, and builds with feedback from players before the full release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect Brick Brock to remain in Early Access for roughly three months after its Early Access launch. This is an estimate; the timing may change as we respond to player feedback and refine the game's balance and difficulty.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We would like to develop more distinctive settings and room interactions, additional secrets, weapons and mini-boss encounters, alongside balance and polish. These are directions we are exploring, not a promised list of additions. Please base your purchase on the game available today.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current game includes four playable heroes, four floors and their guardians, brick collection and four build types, 13 weapon kinds with three tiers, more than 40 enemy types, side rooms and secrets, persistent Workshop talents, difficulty options and a Trial mode. Runs can be suspended and resumed. The game is single-player and currently supports English. Please see About This Game for the current feature details.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We do not currently plan to change the game's base price during or after Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to use feedback and bug reports from Steam discussions and our support email to help prioritize improvements. We are especially interested in what players enjoy about combat, building, room variety and discovery.”

About This Game

The Crown Engine was built to keep the kingdom of Studfall in repair. Eleven days ago it began taking the kingdom apart. It broke its own crown into four shards, gave three to its guardians and kept the last. The Bricksmith at Crownreach Harbour can shut the Engine down once the crown is whole.

Everything in the game is made of bricks. Crates, pillars, stunned turrets and your own builds come apart under the vacuum on your back. The bricks go into a bag that holds 40 at the start. You spend them at the aim point: a wall costs 4 bricks, a spike plate 5, a ram cart 14 and a turret 15. Walls block movement and shots for both sides. Enemies that cannot reach you break your builds down.

A run crosses four floors: the Hollow Keep, the Drowned Gardens, the Glass Sepulchre and the Last Foundry. Each floor is a map of connected rooms that ends in a guardian's hall. Red strokes on the floor mark an enemy attack before it lands. Weapon damage lands on contact, not on the button press.

Heroes

  • Shadowblade. Twin daggers, 95 health. Three-cut combos. Shadowstep dashes 4 units and hits enemies where you land. You are untouchable for 0.55 seconds, and your next attack deals 55% more damage.
  • Oathkeeper. Sword and shield, 125 health. Perfect guard parries in its first 0.23 seconds, then blocks 75% of frontal damage. A parry opens a riposte. Attacks from behind get past the shield.
  • Brickbreaker. Warhammer, 115 health. Wide, slow blows that stagger and break armour. Fault line fractures a line of ground for heavy damage and strong knockback.
  • Runesmith. Rune staff, 85 health. Bolts reach 13 units, and terrain blocks them. Rune well puts a delayed rune at the aim point. It slows nearby enemies, then detonates.

Guardians

  • The Gaoler. His armour holds until he charges into something solid.
  • The Briar Matron. She takes no damage while her three egg sacs stand.
  • The Pale King. His whiteout burns anything not behind cover. A wall you build counts as cover, and the light wears it down.
  • The Crown Engine. Three pylons hold its shield. Blades do nothing to them. They come apart only by hand.

Bricks and building

  • Four builds on keys 1–4 or the D-pad: wall, spike plate, turret, ram cart.
  • 8 brick plans change what a build does. The Bricksmith offers two at each rest stop. Mirror bricks make walls bounce every shot. A spring plate throws whatever steps on it. Turrets within 8 units of each other string a tripwire. A powder cart rolls on after you jump out and bursts on the first thing it hits.
  • Struck things react. A powder crate blasts 2.7 units after a short fuse. A loose brick tower falls away from the blow and crushes a line 3.4 units long. A mine cart rolls until it hits a wall. A lever fires every floor trap in the room. All of these hurt enemies as well as you.
  • Three bricklings merge into a brick hulk. Small brick enemies can be pulled into the vacuum.
  • What you break in a room stays broken when you come back.

Runs

  • More than 40 kinds of enemy. Each fight's crew is drawn from that floor's table.
  • 13 weapon kinds across the four heroes. Each kind has three tiers; the second and third each add a new behaviour.
  • Each floor has three side rooms placed by the run's seed: a pedlar, a locked strongroom holding a weapon kind you do not carry, and a bricked-up room with no door.
  • Some rooms have a hatch to an under-hall: a harder room with a weapon upgrade and a locked cage.
  • On floors 2 to 4, one door decides something for the rest of the floor or the run: the glass shutters, the drive under the cover plates, or the feed you cut before the Crown Engine.
  • Runs take a seed, which you can type in. A run can be suspended and resumed.
  • Embers are kept after death. The Workshop has 10 talents bought with them, among them a third evade charge, tougher walls and harder-hitting turrets.
  • The Trial: one room, the same six enemies, no talents. The best clear for each hero is kept.

Difficulty

  • Wanderer. Enemies deal 52% less damage than on Adventurer and have 26% less health. All progression enabled.
  • Adventurer. Standard.
  • Veteran. Enemies hit 29% harder than on Adventurer and have 19% more health. 25% more embers.
  • Ascendant. Opens after a victory. Enemies hit 48% harder than on Adventurer, have 33% more health and carry affixes. Five ascension levels each add 8% to enemy health and 7% to enemy damage. 50% more embers.

Controls and options

  • Keyboard and mouse, with rebindable keys. Gamepad on the standard mapping, building included.
  • Five camera views. The wheel zooms and a middle-button drag orbits.
  • Reduced motion, impact shake, damage numbers, nearest-enemy aim and control hints are all settings.
  • Visual quality: Auto, High, Medium or Low. Auto steps down when frames run slow.
