About This Game

Ten thousand soldiers. Far from home. Your command depends on their trust.

Anabasis – The Long March is a historical turn-based survival strategy game inspired by Xenophon’s account of the Ten Thousand.

Join a Greek mercenary army marching into the Persian Empire in 401 BC, on an expedition that becomes a desperate struggle to return home. From Sardis to the shores of the Black Sea, manage the daily burdens of command as hunger, exhaustion, hostile forces, and internal divisions wear down your column.

Every order has a human cost. Every day must bring you closer to safety.

KEEP THE COLUMN ALIVE

Choose your marching pace, distribute rations, organize foraging, and decide when to rest. A forced march can gain precious ground while leaving exhausted soldiers and wounded men struggling behind. Reduced rations preserve supplies, but hunger weakens the army you depend on.

Balance food, morale, exhaustion, cohesion, and the needs of the wounded. The consequences of today’s decisions travel with you.

FIND A WAY THROUGH

Cross exposed plains, narrow defiles, dangerous rivers, and snowbound mountains. Assess conditions, seek local guides, and adapt your marching stance to the threats ahead.

At a river, decide whether to attempt the ford, wait for better conditions, or prepare another means of crossing. Time, supplies, and lives are all at stake.

Explore your surroundings, hear your officers’ counsel, and seek divine guidance before committing the column.

COMMAND AN ARMY WITH A VOICE

Your soldiers have opinions about how they should march, eat, fight, and endure.

Bring proposals before the assembly, spend influence to sway support, and secure temporary mandates that affect the journey. Hungry men, wounded soldiers, officers, and front-line fighters bring different priorities to the vote.

An agreement can help carry the army through hardship. Breaking it can damage confidence in your leadership. Repeated failures and broken promises may leave you facing a vote for your own dismissal.

Keeping command means giving the men reasons to follow.

MARCH THROUGH HISTORY

Travel the route of the Ten Thousand through historical landmarks, illustrated events, and conversations with the army’s generals. Face negotiations, ambushes, shortages, and the difficult choices of a force surviving far from home.

As the expedition continues, the strain reaches beyond dwindling supplies. Wounds accumulate, loyalties are tested, and a well-equipped army becomes a battered column struggling to hold together.

Reach Trapezus. Bring back as many as you can.
