About This Game

The year is 793. A handful of spears on a cold shore.

Northmen is a real-time strategy game (pause at any moment) about the Viking Age. You begin with one war chief, a few warriors and eight settlers. Where you go from there is your saga: the monasteries of Northumbria, the rivers of the Franks, the markets of Miklagarðr, or lands no Norseman has seen.

Raid

March your war bands on monasteries and towns, and decide their fate: sack them, conquer them, put them in chains or burn them to the ground.

Fight in the open with shield walls and wedges, or break stone walls with rams while the defenders sally out and neighbouring towns send relief.

Your war chiefs earn their names: victories make their men Blooded, then Veterans, and the smiths of your halls arm them with better blades.

Build

Plant settlements and raise them from a longhouse to a jarl's hall, with barracks, forges, markets, storehouses and a house for your gods.

Clear the land for farms, mines and lumber camps, and watch carts and ships carry trade along your roads and sea lanes.

Build longships, knarrs and drakkars to explore the coasts and carry your armies across the sea.

The game depicts historical slavery as it existed in the Viking age. Captives can be taken in raids, kept in slave camps, sold at slave auctions, and some die in captivity. There is no sexual content and no depiction of drug use or self-harm.
