About This Game

■ A five-player card game from Tsugaru, Japan

Goninkan is a trick-taking card game for five players, from the Tsugaru region of Japan. Each round, a trump suit (the "yaku") is chosen. The player holding the Ace of that suit and the player holding the Joker become the two "Insiders"; the other three are the "Outsiders." The two teams compete to capture picture cards (J, Q, K, A).

■ How it plays

・The two players holding the trump Ace and the Joker are the Insiders; the other three are the Outsiders

・The team that captures more picture cards (J, Q, K, A) wins. The number needed changes from round to round, and a set lasts up to 3 rounds

・The two Insiders decide who leads the first trick by calling "Koi" or "Iku"

・Play a trump card when you can't follow suit to "cut" the trick; playing the Joker is called "dancing"

・Big swings are possible: "Juroku" (capturing all 16 picture cards) and "Sukonku" (leaving the other team with no picture cards at all)

■ Game modes

・Standard Play: choose your CPU opponents and play at your own pace under the normal rules

・Time Attack: face the strongest CPU, Koharu, and race to 50 points

・Daily Challenge: three sets with the same hands for everyone, decided by the date

・Score Attack: play six sets and aim for the highest total score

・Five CPU opponents with different personalities and strength, from the purely random Sora to Koharu, who looks ahead by simulating play
