What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Banners & Crowns is already a complete, playable strategy game with a full campaign and skirmish mode. We want to release in Early Access to get feedback from real players on the balance of the AI opponents, the difficulty levels and the pacing of each season, so that we can tune them with the community instead of guessing.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect to stay in Early Access for roughly 6 to 12 months, depending on the feedback we receive and how much balancing work is needed.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The final version will mainly be a more polished and better balanced version of what is in Early Access. It is in our plans to refine the AI opponents, improve the balance of kingdoms, heroes and difficulty levels, and add more polish and quality-of-life improvements based on player feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version is fully playable from start to finish: nine campaign chapters, skirmish mode on maps from tiny to huge with up to eight kingdoms, the daily realm, the royal treasury, heroes, diplomacy and the four seasons. The main area still being tuned is the strength of the AI opponents (they tend to accumulate gold late in long games).”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“It is not in our current plans to change the price when the game leaves Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will follow the Steam discussions and reviews, publish regular updates and patch notes, and use the community's feedback to decide what to balance, fix and improve first.”

About This Game

Four seasons. One throne.

Banners & Crowns is a turn-based medieval strategy game played on a living, low-poly isometric map. Found cities, research technologies, raise armies and decide whether your neighbours are friends, tributaries or targets. The map starts hidden behind white clouds; every unit you send out lifts them.

Eight kingdoms, each with its own ruler, favourite troop and national perks, are fighting over the same land. Yours may be the Peacemaker's realm of Aldoria, the iron fortress of Valmere, the orchards of Sylvane, the merchants of Oakhaven, Kharn's raiders, or one of the three rivals you meet along the way.

What makes it different

  • The seasons change the war. Spring heals, summer is for marching, autumn doubles the harvest, and in winter the rivers freeze: armies cross where they could not, supply runs thin outside your borders, and when the ice melts anyone still standing on it is swept to the bank.
  • Heroes that grow. Your hero gains levels and skills, and carries them from chapter to chapter. Every kingdom's ruler has their own model, favourite troop and perks.
  • Real diplomacy. Meet the other kingdoms, sign peace for eight rounds, form alliances, send tribute, or seal a pact with a royal marriage. Break your word and your honour suffers.
  • Walls, sieges and flanking. Pikes stop cavalry, walls protect cities, catapults ignore them, and units that surround an enemy hit harder.
  • Things happen. Plague, bandits, mercenary companies, travelling fairs and bountiful harvests change your plans from round to round.
  • Build the realm. Farms, mines, lumber huts, fishing docks, markets, infirmaries, roads and bridges. Cities grow through five levels from a hamlet to a walled fortress.

Modes

  • Campaign: nine chapters with briefings, objectives and star ratings, ending with a conquest of the whole realm on a huge map.
  • Skirmish: choose your kingdom, pick or randomise your rivals, map size from tiny to huge (up to 8 kingdoms on 30x30), four difficulty levels.
  • Daily realm: everybody plays the same seed for the day.
  • Royal treasury: spend the glory you earn on sixteen permanent boons.
  • Kingdoms: an encyclopaedia of the eight rulers with their lore and strengths.

At a glance

  • Turn-based, single player, mouse and keyboard
  • 8 kingdoms, 9 campaign chapters, skirmish up to 30x30 with 8 players
  • Seasons, heroes, diplomacy, sieges, random events
  • Adjustable size of objects on the map, optional classic 2D map
  • Autosave every round

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

The key art, story illustrations, kingdom portraits, music, opening film, menu video and its narration were produced with generative AI tools (Ideogram, Lyria, Seedance, Kling and ElevenLabs, through Artlist) and then selected, edited and assembled by the developer. The 3D map, units and buildings are procedural low-poly models built in code, and the sound effects are synthesised in the game. The game was written with the help of an AI coding assistant. No content is generated while the game is running; everything is pre-generated and shipped in the build. No real people's likenesses or voices are used.
