What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Route Ranger is being developed to make everyday HTTP API testing straightforward: send a request, understand the response, and connect requests into a repeatable workflow. It is designed for developers working on games, websites, desktop applications, and other software that communicates through REST APIs or HTTP services.
The core workflow is already implemented, but we want feedback from people using it on real projects before settling the full-release experience. Developers organize collections differently, work with different authentication requirements, and build request sequences of varying complexity. Those differences are particularly valuable when refining the visual route editor, variable handling, response inspection, and test results.
Early Access gives users an opportunity to influence how these tools work. We want to learn which actions take too many steps, where explanations are unclear, and which improvements would make the biggest difference during regular use.”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“Our current estimate is 3-6 months of Early Access
We intend to use Early Access to refine the request editor, visual request chains, variable management, and response-testing workflow. Our release criteria include dependable saving and recovery, predictable request execution and cancellation, clear feedback when something fails, and an interface that users can learn without extensive guidance.
We plan to review progress against these goals and share development updates through Steam announcements. As the remaining work becomes clearer, we intend to update this page with a more useful timeframe. ”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Our planned areas of development include making chains easier to assemble and debug, improving how users select values from responses and reuse them in later requests, and making variable scope and environment selection easier to understand. We also want to improve the presentation of failed assertions and request errors so that users can identify which step failed and why.
Other priorities include smoother collection management, clearer import feedback and better keyboard navigation. We plan to expand the documentation and example workflows to cover common tasks in both game and general software development.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version includes Route Ranger’s core HTTP API testing workflow. Users can create and organize requests, send them to HTTP or HTTPS endpoints, inspect responses, and connect saved requests into sequential workflows on a visual canvas.
Available functionality includes:
• Collections and folders for organizing requests.
• Custom HTTP methods, URL parameters, headers, and common authentication options.
• JSON, XML, text, form, multipart, and binary request bodies.
• Environments, reusable variables, and masked secret variables.
• Response formatting, search, JSONPath filtering, assertions, and response comparison.
• Extraction of values from JSON responses for use in later requests.
• A visual route editor with draggable nodes, connections, pan, zoom, and saved layouts.
• Repeated runs with CSV or JSON input data.
• Local collection files, import and export tools, and a command-line runner.
• Multiple themes, font choices, icon styles, and interface scaling.
The route editor currently executes requests in sequence; it does not provide arbitrary branching workflows. Import support is intended to help transfer existing requests, but does not imply complete compatibility with every feature or script in another API client.”

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Route Ranger will be priced at 11.99 during Early Access.
The price may change when the software leaves Early Access to reflect the features, improvements, and overall experience available at that time. We have not set a final-release price yet. Any planned change will be communicated through Steam announcements before it takes effect.
We encourage customers to evaluate the software based on the functionality available at the time of purchase. Early Access provides access to the current application and the opportunity to contribute feedback while development continues.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to use Steam Discussions as the main place for users to report problems, suggest improvements, and discuss how they use Route Ranger. Steam announcements and release notes will explain significant changes, current priorities, and the issues addressed in each update.
Feedback from various disciplines such as modders, game developers and general software developers is welcome. We want Route Ranger to be useful across a wide range of HTTP APIs while keeping the interface focused and approachable.
We plan to prioritize issues according to their impact, how often they occur, and how closely they relate to Route Ranger’s core workflow. Community suggestions will inform development, although we cannot commit to implementing every request.
When sharing examples or bug reports, users should remove passwords, tokens, personal information, and any sensitive data. Sanitized requests and clear reproduction steps are especially helpful.”
