Coming Soon To Early Access

The developers of this game intend to release as a work in progress, developing with the feedback of players.

Note: Games in Early Access are not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to play this game in its current state, then you should wait to see if the game progresses further in development. Learn more

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Base Matter is being released in Early Access as a way for me to share this game with the community right away, while allowing everyone to have a say in the features and direction to take the game. Being that this game is targeted to a niche community, I want to make sure it fulfills the wishes of the people who play.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I plan to run Base Matter through early access for a period of about 1 year. That should provide enough time to rapidly introduce new features, catch bugs, and improve efficiency as well as compatibility.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan for the final version to have a significant number of materials and possible reactions, improved graphical fidelity, and full Steam workshop integration. Additionally, I plan to have a fully fleshed out physics system complicated enough to emulate mechanical parts in a way that will allow us to build things as complicated as gas engines.
Finally, I am fully committed to adding as many features as reasonable that are requested from the community. A large part of this type of sandbox game is the variety of creative pursuits, everyone will have different goals and I aim to enable that to the fullest extent possible.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently the game is fully functional with a large library of elements, working pressure and thermal systems, and a fully functioning gravity/fluid system. You can start the game and build with very little restriction.
The game is still very much experimental. It holds a good (30+ fps) on very complex worlds, tested on an RTX4070 and Intel i9. However reliability and efficiency will need to be steadily improved over the duration of early access”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I plan to keep the price of Base Matter the same during early access, but will see an increase when moving to the full release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community will be a vital core component of development. Feature requests will be treated as very high priority. I expect a large portion of the future features and materials will be driven by community demand.”

About This Game

Base Matter is a fully 3D material simulation sandbox built around experimentation, machinery, and interacting systems.

Build structures, machines, pressure vessels, fluid systems, reactors, and whatever else you can come up with using a volumetric grid of simulated materials. Then start the simulation and see what happens.

Sand falls and piles up. Liquids flow and separate. Heat spreads through materials. Water freezes, boils, and condenses. Fuel needs oxygen to burn. Pressure builds inside sealed spaces and can rupture weaker materials. Salt dissolves into water. Plants consume resources and grow. Acid corrodes. Gunpowder chains. Machinery moves matter around the world.

Base Matter is designed as an open-ended sandbox. There are no missions, progression systems, or prescribed objectives. Build an experiment, run it, inspect the results, change something, and try again.

Build functional systems

Use pumps, valves, heaters, coolers, filters, fans, gas pumps, pistons, pushers, timers, sensors, switches, logic gates, sources, drains, and other devices to create working machines and automated experiments.

Recent builds also include basic nuclear reactor materials, including uranium, neutrons, control rods, copper heat conductors, and reactor steel.

Look inside your experiments

Base Matter is not just about watching things happen from the outside.

Switch between normal 3D editing, thin slice editing, and cutaway views to work inside complex builds. Use matter, heat, pressure, and power display modes to understand what the simulation is doing, and place probes to track values over time.

Experiment without losing your work

Pause the simulation, advance one tick at a time, save worlds, copy machines as reusable stamps, create checkpoints, and use limited rewind history to inspect or recover experiments.

Current features

  • Fully 3D voxel-based material simulation

  • Powders, liquids, gases, solids, fire, steam, molten materials, and more

  • Heat transfer and phase changes

  • Combustion and oxygen-dependent burning

  • Pressure and sealed chambers

  • Corrosion, explosions, growth, moisture, salinity, and material storage

  • Electrical logic and automation

  • Pumps, valves, filters, pistons, fans, heaters, coolers, and other machinery

  • Nuclear reactor materials

  • Slice editing and cutaway viewing

  • Heat, pressure, power, and matter visualization

  • Probes and graph history

  • Saves, autosaves, stamps, checkpoints, undo, and rewind

  • Built-in example scenes

  • Large worlds supporting roughly one million available cells

Early alpha

Base Matter is currently in active development. Systems may change, bugs are expected, and performance can vary significantly depending on world size and how much of the simulation is active.

The simulation is intentionally simplified and is designed for experimentation rather than scientific or engineering analysis.

If you build something interesting, strange, useful, or catastrophic, I want to see it.

Build it. Run it. See what happens.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Base matter does not use AI within the game itself.
Some marketing materials and images on the store page have AI used as a general editing tool.
