Version 1.3 Is Out

A new version of Thaumistry is out. If you still haven't finished the game, maybe now is the perfect time to get going!

Version 1.3 comes with:

  • Full-screen support
You can now play the game in full-screen mode. In order to avoid excessively long lines of text, the maximum text width is now configurable in the options.

  • Accessible text-mode version (Windows)
For visually impaired users who rely on screen readers and Braille displays, the Windows version can now be played in a text-mode window. This should provide full accessibility support for screen readers like NVDA and JAWS, or any other screen reader that supports text-mode windows.

  • Accessibility improvements on macOS
The game should now be more accessible to visually impaired macOS users using VoiceOver.

  • Stand-alone T3 file
We got quite a few requests to release a stand-alone T3 file that can be played using third-party TADS interpreters. The game is very closely tied to our own customized engine, but now we have a version that is able to run on vanilla TADS interpreters. You can find it inside the game's installation directory, aptly named "Thaumistry.t3".

Please note that the stand-alone version of the game lacks all of our custom engine functionality, including the in-game map, appearance, custom configuration options and auto saves.

  • Numerous smaller enhancements and bug fixes.

Please be aware that unlike the previous updates, this one will break your existing saved games. If you have recently started playing the game but haven't finished it yet, you can opt to go back to version 1.2 in the game's Steam Properties. To do that, right-click on the game's entry in your Steam Library, select "Properties", and go to the "BETAS" tab. In the selection box, switch to "old_version_1.2" and Steam will download the previous version of the game files. You will still get the updated engine (including full-screen mode), but the text-mode version will not be available.

Have fun with the new version!

Reviews

“Well-written and whimsical. Packed with jokes and Easter eggs. Intricate, satisfying puzzles. A lighthearted text romp that casts its entertaining puzzle magic on the modern era. [...] This game plays fair, never lets you get stuck, comes with a tutorial to ease you into the experience, and even autosaves for you.”
4 / 5 – Adventure Gamers

“Full of absurdist humour and crazy characters [...] Monkey Island meets Monty Python.”
8 / 10 – FingerGuns

“Thaumistry is exactly what you want if you’re an Infocom fanboy like me. It has that thoughtful, funny writing Infocom spoiled us with, dozens of just-hard-enough puzzles, a cast of characters with enough personality to be interesting, an over-the-top set-piece climax, and all the refinements you expect from a modern adventure game.”
5 / 5 – Quarter to Three

Today, he will find out why.

Thaumistry: In Charm's Way is a hilarious text adventure from award-winning Infocom and Legend Entertainment author Bob Bates.
