Game Pulse: 1983 Season Set

An MVP shortstop who caught the last out of the World Series, a reliever who rewrote the saves record, and a home run that was taken away over pine tar and handed back four days later. This set brings the complete 1983 professional baseball season to Game Pulse — all 26 teams, every player, and 26 authentic ballpark cards reflecting the quirks and dimensions of the era's classic venues.

What's Included

All 26 team rosters with full player cards (position players and pitchers)

Mid-season movers get a card for each team they played on, plus a combined totals card

All 26 ballparks, from Fenway Park to the Kingdome, with ratings derived from period park performance data

New ratings built from the full 1983 regular season, LCS, and World Series

Card Generation

Every card is generated from actual 1983 season statistics. Batter and pitcher ratings are built from real performance data across the full season, with park factors computed from each stadium's run environment — so Cal Ripken Jr.'s card reflects an MVP season, and Memorial Stadium plays the way it played.

45

Dan Quisenberry pitched from down near the ground, struck out fewer than four batters per nine innings, and saved 45 games for Kansas City in 1983 — a new single-season record, seven better than the old mark of 38. The outs came on ground balls, one inning after another, across 69 appearances. Every one of those saves is baked into the card. Bring Quisenberry in with the tying run on second and let the infield go to work.

Baltimore's Year

Cal Ripken Jr. followed a Rookie of the Year season with an MVP one: .318 with 27 home runs and 102 RBI, leading the American League in hits (211), doubles (47), and runs (121) while playing every inning of every game at shortstop. Eddie Murray hit .306 with 33 home runs and 111 RBI and finished second in the voting. Mike Boddicker, a rookie, posted a 2.77 ERA with five shutouts, and Scott McGregor won 18. In the first season after Earl Weaver's retirement, Joe Altobelli's team won 98 games and the American League East, then beat Chicago in four games for the pennant: Boddicker struck out 14 in a Game 2 shutout, and Tito Landrum's tenth-inning home run won the clincher.

A Season Full of Legends

1983 was packed with milestones. Dale Murphy won a second straight NL MVP with 36 home runs, a league-best 121 RBI, and 30 stolen bases. LaMarr Hoyt won 24 games and the AL Cy Young for a Chicago team that took the West by 20 games behind rookie Ron Kittle's 35 home runs, and John Denny went 19-6 with a 2.37 ERA to win the NL award. Wade Boggs hit .361 for a first batting title, Bill Madlock took the National League crown at .323, Jim Rice led the American League with 39 home runs, and Mike Schmidt led the majors with 40. Rickey Henderson stole 108 bases for a third 100-steal season, while Tim Raines swiped 90 in Montreal. Darryl Strawberry joined Kittle as Rookie of the Year. Dave Righetti threw a no-hitter on the Fourth of July. On July 24, George Brett's ninth-inning home run off Goose Gossage was wiped out by the umpires because of the pine tar on the bat — and restored by the league four days later. Steve Carlton won game number 300, and Carlton and Nolan Ryan both passed Walter Johnson's career strikeout total, a record that had stood since 1927. It was a last go-round for three legends, too: Johnny Bench, Carl Yastrzemski, and Gaylord Perry all played their final seasons. Every star's real 1983 performance is here, card for card.

Relive the 1983 World Series

Baltimore vs. Philadelphia — the I-95 Series. Philadelphia arrived with the Wheeze Kids: Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, and Tony Perez, reunited from Cincinnati's 1975 and 1976 champions, with John Denny and Steve Carlton at the front of the rotation. Garry Maddox's eighth-inning home run won Game 1 for Philadelphia, 2-1 — and then Baltimore won four straight. Eddie Murray homered twice in the Game 5 clincher at Veterans Stadium, Scott McGregor threw a shutout, and Rick Dempsey, who hit .385 with four doubles and a home run, was named World Series MVP. The final out was a line drive from Maddox — caught by Ripken. Replay it batter by batter, manage either side, or run the series a few dozen times and see whether Philadelphia can build on that Game 1 win. Every at-bat, every pitching change, every ballpark detail — all driven by the real 1983 cards and the roll of the dice.
