INVESTIGATE THE TRANSFER

Follow leads, inspect evidence, contact people close to the deal, and work out what the information actually proves.

Different sources know different parts of the story. An agent may understand the player's intentions. A club contact may know whether negotiations are active. Another source may know the contract details.

More access does not guarantee the truth. You still have to judge what the evidence supports.

Every extra check costs time.

While you investigate, rival media moves closer to publishing. Go too early and you may damage your credibility. Wait too long and someone else may break the story first.

There is not always one perfect decision. Sometimes a cautious headline is the strongest story you can honestly defend.
