About This Software

Never lose a save to a patch again

A game updates overnight and the save that loaded yesterday will not load today. A mod goes wrong. Steam Cloud quietly keeps the older copy. A crash lands in the middle of a write. None of it can be undone after the fact, so Failsafe takes the copy before it happens.

Install it and forget it. It finds your games, snapshots their saves after every session and before every update, and keeps the copies in the cloud folder you already have.

One price, everything included

  • No subscription, no storage tier, no DLC, no account.

  • Your saves go to your folder, on your cloud. Failsafe never stores them, so there is no server behind the price and no fee that comes back next year.

  • No DRM. Failsafe runs without Steam running.

  • No telemetry and no network connections of any kind.

What it does

  • Finds your games. Steam, Epic, GOG, EA, Ubisoft, , itch, Xbox and Game Pass, the common emulators, and any folder you point it at. It tells you honestly what it found ("47 of 62 games detected") and asks you to confirm a likely folder before it trusts a guess.

  • Backs up before it matters. Before Steam applies an update. Before a mod folder changes. When a game closes. On a hotkey before the boss. Every so often while you play, if you want that too.

  • Keeps a real history. Every backup is a snapshot; nothing is ever overwritten. A year of history by default, and the snapshots taken before a patch, before a mod or before a restore are kept forever. Unchanged files are stored once, so ten versions of a large save cost about one.

  • Verifies every copy. Every file is hashed when it is written and checked again when it is restored. A backup that cannot be read back is not a backup, and Failsafe reads its own back on a schedule to make sure.

  • Restores only when you say so. Backup is automatic; restore never is. The restore dialog shows the save on disk and the one you are restoring side by side, says in plain words which is newer, refuses to put an empty or damaged file over a good one, and snapshots your current save first. Undo is one click.

  • Uses the cloud you already have. Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud, Syncthing, a NAS or a second drive. No sign-in, no tokens, nothing to authorize again next week. A plain folder works exactly the same way.

  • Watches the destination, not just the source. A tray icon shows green, amber or red with the last time a backup was verified good. If two sync clients fight over the folder, if the drive goes missing, if a cleaner or antivirus removes files, if the cloud client turns your backups into placeholders, it names the culprit and the fix.

  • Rescues Windows saves. When OneDrive has moved your Documents folder out from under a game, or Controlled Folder Access is blocking its saves, Failsafe says so and shows the fix.

  • Backs up Xbox and Game Pass saves, including the container format most tools skip.

  • Stays out of the way. A tray app with a low idle footprint, no launcher, no per-game setup. It never appears as a game you are playing on your Steam profile.

What it does not do

Please read this before you buy.

  • Server-side saves. Destiny 2, GTA Online, Diablo IV and other live-service games keep progress on their servers. There is nothing on your disk to back up.

  • Recover a save Steam Cloud has already overwritten. Steam keeps no version history. Failsafe can prevent the next one; it cannot recover the last one.

  • Write into a game's Steam Cloud. Steam's API is per game and does not allow it.

  • Host its own cloud storage. Deliberately. Bring the folder you already pay for, or use a free tier: Google Drive gives up to 15 GB, OneDrive 5 GB, Dropbox 2 GB.

  • Pass a co-op save between friends. Not what this is for.

  • Accounts, telemetry or DRM. None, ever.

How it treats your data

Failsafe reads save files through ordinary file operations. It does not hook, inject into or read the memory of any game, it needs no administrator rights, and it installs no driver or service. Nothing it does is hidden: it is simply a program, sitting in your tray, writing to a folder you chose. Every snapshot is plain files, JSON and compressed objects, that another PC or a person with a text editor can read.

SteamOS

Failsafe runs on SteamOS in the tray, exactly as it does on Windows.
