About This Game

Codename: Operation Go is a turn-based tactical strategy game that blends the rules of Go, the combat of a tactical wargame, and the visual presentation of a tabletop strategy game.

Unlike traditional tactical games, units do not need to spend their movement advancing from the rear to the front. As in Go, you can deploy units directly to any available position on the battlefield, send them into action immediately, and capture enemy forces outright by surrounding them.

Your reinforcements can appear wherever they are needed most—but enemy forces can threaten your rear just as suddenly. Traditional front lines no longer hold. A new front may emerge within a single turn, only to collapse in the next. Every action becomes a tactical decision of both space and timing.

Deploy Straight into Battle

Units can be deployed directly to any available position on the battlefield instead of advancing step by step from the rear toward the front.

Newly deployed units can enter the fight immediately, while forces already in play can be redeployed to other sectors to keep pace with a rapidly changing battle.

A threatened flank. Exposed heavy weapons in the rear. An isolated command post. Any of them can become the key to turning the tide—and opportunities rarely last for long.

In war, there is no fixed disposition and no constant form.

Divide and Encircle

Destroying the enemy head-on is not your only path to victory. Just as in Go, you can eliminate entire groups of enemy units by cutting them off and surrounding them.

Sever their connections. Compress their space. Divide their forces and close the encirclement.

A blocked route, an isolated formation, or an outpost cut off from the main force can cause an otherwise solid defensive line to collapse. Tear open an enemy formation and defeat it piece by piece, or use terrain and deployment to tighten the encirclement until there is nowhere left to retreat.

But the enemy can do exactly the same to you. Every move is therefore part of a larger tactical contest.

Engage with the orthodox; win with the unorthodox.

Combined Arms

Tanks break through the line. Artillery delivers supporting fire. Paratroopers strike where they are least expected. Infantry excel in the close confines of urban combat.

Every unit has its own place on the battlefield.

Each turn allows multiple unit actions and tactical actions, giving different forces the opportunity to work together in tightly coordinated sequences. One unit creates an opening; another exploits it. Individual strengths combine into a complete fighting system, producing results far greater than any unit could achieve alone.

The skilled warrior seeks victory from the situation, not from individual men; thus he chooses the right men and lets the situation work.

Turn Terrain to Your Advantage

Victory is never decided by numbers alone. Terrain is part of the battle.

Open plains become steel meat grinders where opposing forces collide head-on. Dense forests conceal troops from threats overhead. Rugged mountains favor those who hold the high ground.

Rivers and swamps form natural barriers that can halt an offensive and redirect entire lines of advance. Cities, factories, and airfields become forests of steel—providing both a steady flow of reinforcements and valuable shelter for their defenders.

Learning to use the ground itself can matter more than simply bringing more troops.

“The natural formation of the country is the soldier’s best ally.”

An Ever-Expanding Battlefield

A battle begins in only one corner of the map, then pushes outward as new sectors of the battlefield are opened.

With each advance come new enemies, new terrain, and new situations. Objectives may change as the battle develops.

What first appears to be a successful offensive may lead your forces into a far more complicated situation. Behind every newly revealed sector may lie a fresh threat—or an unexpected opportunity.

You must continually reassess the battlefield, redeploy your forces, and change the direction of your operations if you hope to remain one step ahead.

Do not repeat the tactics that gained you one victory; let your methods adapt to the infinite variety of circumstances.

Command the Battlefield from the Tabletop

The visual design of Codename: Operation Go deliberately evokes the feeling of a tabletop wargame.

Each battlefield resembles a physical game board laid out on a table, while military units become the pieces with which you contest the battle.

On this small tabletop, you will lay your plans within the command tent—and decide victory a thousand miles away.

A Campaign That Builds Step by Step

New mechanics are introduced gradually through story dialogue, tutorials, and mission objectives.

As the campaign progresses, you will encounter new units, terrain, tactical abilities, and increasingly complex battlefield situations.

Each mission is an unfolding tactical puzzle:

Read the situation. Deploy your forces. Complete the objective. Open the next battlefield. And ultimately, secure victory.

Key Features

  • Go-inspired free deployment — deploy units directly to any available position on the battlefield instead of advancing them from a rear base.

  • Divide and encircle — cut enemy forces apart, compress their space, surround them, and capture entire formations using rules inspired by Go.

  • Rapidly shifting front lines — reinforcements can appear at critical positions at any moment, while yesterday’s rear area can become today’s front line.

  • Multi-unit coordination — chain multiple unit and tactical actions together within a single turn, allowing different forces to create opportunities for one another.

  • 12 distinctive unit types — command infantry, tanks, artillery, fortifications, paratroopers, and other units, each with its own tactical role.

  • 4 tactical abilities — influence the battlefield beyond ordinary unit actions with additional options for offense, defense, support, and counterplay.

  • Terrain is strategy — forests, mountains, rivers, swamps, cities, factories, and airfields all reshape the battlefield and the tactics available to you.

  • An ever-expanding battlefield — advance from one sector to the next as new enemies, terrain, objectives, threats, and opportunities emerge.

  • Tabletop-inspired presentation — fight across battlefields designed to resemble physical wargame boards laid out on a table.

  • Hex-grid turn-based tactics — fight for the initiative through deployment, positioning, routes, formations, terrain, and encirclement.

  • A progressively deepening single-player campaign — new units, mechanics, objectives, and battlefield situations are introduced naturally through missions, story, and tutorials.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Generative AI tools were used during development to assist in the creation of certain game assets. For visual assets such as units and characters, the developer first created original line art manually, then used AI-assisted coloring as part of the workflow, followed by additional manual editing and refinement. For music, AI was used to generate an initial melodic idea, which was then manually edited, arranged, and refined by the developer in LMMS. All AI-assisted content is pre-generated and reviewed by the developer before being included in the game. The game does not use live-generated AI during gameplay.
